Hi Friends! Today’s project is a strange one using supplies I am unfamiliar with:

Today I am creating with the supplies in the July 2018 Smart Art Box. I had never used oil based markers other than the metallic ones you might touch up a frame with so this was a challenging supply for me to create with but I think it’s good to bust out of your comfort zone once in a while and try something new and different. Supplies:
- Pebeo oil based markers set of 5 (primaries plus black and white)
- Canvas panel
- #4 flat brush
- Gamsol
- I also recommend you have a palette so you can mix some colors for greater variety.
Note: You will need to prime each marker to get it ready for use as the ink is sealed in the barrel until a consumer activates it. Do this ahead of time so you won’t have to stop working.
Project tips:
- These markers are oil based but dry fast. You can block in your line work and then fill in with paint without much worry of the outlines smearing. If you need to blend or cover a large area I recommend dispensing some paint on a palette by pressing the tip firmly to the palette until the paint flows and mixing it with gamsol to the desired color and then brushing it on the canvas.
- I recommend working with smaller shapes than I did as I had to struggle to fill them and I had to stop to mix paint lot. This would be better for smaller art I think.
- If you get frustrated let the paint dry and come back and add highlights and outline again for definition if needed. Art is supposed to be fun so if you get frustrated take a break.

Wow Lindsay, you just whipped those markers out and made Cubism art! I would not have made it that far. Don’t apologize…it’s good to see how you struggled through this.
As to anyone still making cards…YES, there are lots of us still doing and loving it. It helps to belong to an online group for challenges.

I like that “painting”! Maybe you need some time to get used to it. I was amazed how you managed to mix the skin colors that easily. I wish I could. Please don’t burn it!
I must say though I have difficulties with using markers to paint, you’d think it would be easier to just paint with with gouache or some other kinds of opaque paint. But I guess that is what those Smart Art boxes are for, to try out something new.

I am so glad you had trouble with this box. I feel so much better now! I made a 4″ x 4″ square landscape with this product because I had problems with the pens. You had to really pump the pens to Prime them, mine splooshed out on the first press down. I got my fingers in the ink and worked the canvas like finger painting. My ink was everywhere, you are having trouble with the ink covering. I didn’t want to waste the ink so I grabbed a smaller canvas to work on. I was really scrambling to pull something together before it started to dry.
This is a $49.95 box! š I had a $10 coupon, but still think it was way too expensive for what was inside. I cancelled future boxes. I don’t recommend the boxes or these specific pens. My canvas was smudged too. It was a very unpleasant experience for me, even though I was able to work an ok painting result.
