Cell Phones, Pumpkins and Swimming {oh my!}

Apparently for a couple of weeks, and maybe as long as a month, my cell phone has not been working. I discovered this yesterday. I was planning one of my crazy, last-minute, kids-are-out-of-school fun days and I had called a few moms to join me at the local indoor pool. I love swimming in October because I’m not the only pasty white broad in a bathing suit! Anyway, I decided to charge my phone (I try to do that every few weeks) and lo and behold id had no service, huh. Come to think of it I can’t remember the last time the thing rang (a statement of my vast popularity) or the last time I tried to make a call on it (a statement of my typical antisocial behavior) but gee, I like to have it in the car in the case of an emergency. Ah well, enough of that, I did not have much time to be crafty this weekend but I thought I would share a card I made for the October issue of Scrap & Stamp Arts, you might have seen it in my (ahem)…column?

You might still be able to snag a copy of the October issue on newsstands, if not you can order a copy if you like. I used Vintage Pumpkin stamps from Pink Persimmon on this card. I made the honeycomb paper pop up out of plain tissue paper. If you want to see how you can check out my video here of read the article! Better yet, do both and keep a writer employed!

Pop-ups are fun, don’t you think?

I can’t honestly say that I am upset that my cell phone is not working, I like my quiet and solitude. I don’t like to be interrupted and I don’t like to chit-chat while running errands or have my face buried in a gadget rather than living my experiences first hand.  Sometimes I feel like walking up to someone who has their face buried in a phone, who is not paying attention to their surroundings, grabbing their wallet and saying “look, I could have just mugged you, pay attention!” Especially to young women who will walk out to their car, in a dark parking lot, while texting. Don’t you see what an easy target you are?!? As for driving and phone usage, that is the reason I hate to call anyones cell phone, I don’t want to be responsible for a 10 car pile up because someone wants to talk while driving. I want no part of it. I once read (Okay, okay I listened to the audiobook) Stephen King’s  Cell a delightfully creepy postapocalyptic romp where an electronic pulse causes everyone using a cell phone to lose their minds and act like violent zombies. Cell phone not working, not a bad thing. Sorry bout the tirade, mainly I wanted to let anyone know who tried to call me over the past month that I was not ignoring you, just technically clueless enough to realize my phone was incapacitated, next time send me an email, call my landline or better yet, just leave me a comment on my blog. Til next time happy crafting:)

  1. I agree totally with you on cell phones. They are a hazard. I carry one in my pocket because if I fall I’m dead meat and have to call for help. Love the tutorial. don’t know if I can manage to get cricut to cut it. What cartridge did you use.

    1. I used SCAL software, I think you need to use George and basic shapes or plantain schoolbook and use it with Cricut design studio with your computer…r maybe cricut craftroom, I’ve never tried craftroom because I am aftarid it might screw up my scal software.

  2. Hi Lindsay!

Just had to chuckle! I too, don’t talk on the phone when I am driving or when I am in a store running errands. I just think it is RUDE to be on the phone when people are trying to service you! Don’t you? I actually had to leave that on my cell phone messaging service. “Hi, this is Valerie! I am probably in my car driving or in a store being serviced, SO…that is why I did not answer your call. I will call you back when I get home.”

It has aggravated people with that, “Everybody does it” sarky snear. But my oldest daughter is 14 and will soon enough be driving…so I HAVE to be the example of what TO DO or NOT TO DO. I can’t expect her to listen to my rules and instructions if they are contradictory to what my actions are.

    Just my 2 cents.

    Have a blessed day!

  3. Couldn’t agree more about the cell phone. I use mine more than you but I hate being on an “electronic leash!” What about peace and quiet? Don’t get me started about driving & cell phones….

  7. I saw the article. 😉 Loved the article.

I am so happy you wrote what you did about cell phones. I feel 100% the same way you do. I don’t even own a cell phone. I have a gorgeous pink Blackberry that is not connected to any phone service. I can still call 911. I just use it to take a rare picture. I use it for my shopping lists.

I love my quiet and solitude. I hate being interrupted. A former friend actually got an attitude with me that I didn’t want to spend all day talking to her. Jeez!

I want to run my errands and not have a private conversation in a store. I remember years ago when I was shopping at Michaels some woman was having a detailed discussion about her colonoscopy. TMI there lady! ROFL!

I want to live my experiences first hand too.

I am a computer geek. You might think the mugging thing. I will tell you I am looking at those phones thinking how naive people are. They stand there and hold their phones in their hand with all their date on it. Jeez, hacker’s dream.

My DH is a professional driver. I definitely don’t want to talk to him on the road. I think pile ups too.

Don’t even get me started on the Cell, lol. That book freaked me out. The good news we won’t turn into zombies because we don’t like cell phones, lol.

Thanks again for the tirade. I don’t feel so abnormal now. 🙂

  8. Gorgeous card Lindsay love the pumpkins! I use a blue tooth all the time now and I love it. I dropped my home phone 2 years ago when I realized the only people calling it were telemarketers and doctors offices to confirm appointments. Sure hope I don’t turn into a Zombie!

  9. A Doctor Who TV episode had that same zombie thing going on! LOL! I never wanted a cell phone, but my 79 yr. old mother recently put me on her family plan and gave me a ball and chain. If it’s not on 100% of the time, she freaks out and gives me the biz, but I turn off the durn thing whenever I can, like in church, or the library, ah, peace! However, it’s her version of the Life Alert, so if it gives her peace of mind to have it, I guess I can put up with it. She had all the bells and whistles taken off, so no internet though, sigh! And the call plan is free after 7:00 pm, but I never think of calling anybody then as I’m busy cooking, and cleaning and watching the tube with my hubbin. . .Congrats on being published, ahem! again! *smile*
