Hi friends! I am a big believer in sketching and drawing everyday. These need not be epic finished works done with fancy supplies. These can be quick sketches using whatever you have on had (even your kid’s crayons!) Sketch fast and deliberately without bothering to erase. As you practice you will improve and nobody has to see your sketches if you don’t want them too, that is the great thing about working in a sketchbook, it closes:)
I was inspired with the contents of this months Smart Art Box to sketch boldly with markers and I hope you grab a marker and sketch along. It was just the thing I needed since all of my time lately has been consumed with a book illustration project and Decluttering my craftroom, both very taxing endeavors LOL! To tell you the truth I love seeing sketchy pencil lines in artist’s work, it is like a roadmap as to how an artist arrived where they did. I suggest you start sketching with a light color and then draw over the “good” lines with your darker colors as you progress through the piece. In today’s video I will teach you how to sketch this blue jay in real-time. Enjoy:)
Tutorial Sponsored by Smart Art! You can subscribe and receive the same boxes I get every month or purchase past boxes. All of the supplies I am using came in the March 2017 Smart Art Box. I have listed the supplies below as well. You can purchase the box I am using here while supplies last.
THE SUPPLIES
- Alcohol Markers in Shades of Blue (#COLORING)
- Waterbased Markers (STABILO PEN 68 MARKER WALLET SET OF 15)
- PEN & INK SKETCH BOOK 5.5”X8”
- Reference photo
I had a lot of fun with this kit, I have never had a pen and ink sketchbook before and I like this size a lot. I can see myself stashing it in my pocketbook for impromptu sketching!
Please help me pick my next LIVE tutorial project!
I will be moving the regular weekly live show from Friday to Thursday this week at 12:30pm Eastern Time because I am chaperoning a school field trip on Friday (my teenagers are thrilled.) Since we just had another big snowstorm I thought it would be nice to paint something springy! I can’t decide what I want to paint so I will let you decide! Leave a comment below with your choice of subjects and I will tally them up tomorrow morning. Thank you so much for helping me!
I hope to see you back here tomorrow for the weekly live painting class, I can’t wait to see what you pick for us to paint, till then happy crafting!
Edit: I just tabulated the votes and so far the Bunnies are ahead so that is what we will paint on YouTube live today but if you want me to do recorded tutorials of the other subjects just let me know! Thank you so much for helping me decide, you are the best!

I must be confusing a bunny for another animal you’ve done. I’ll poke around your videos later to see which one I’m thinking of.

Hi Lindsay,
I’d like to see you do them all – but can you start with the spring lamb, I’d like to see how you handle the woolly coat – quite a different texture to capture than fluffy feathers and I’d love to see how you approach this.

Can blue jays be described as perky? Your blue jay sure looks perky. I’m kind of partial to lambs since my son has helped his friend raise two lambs for 4H. I think lambs are really cute.

I’d stick with the birds, of any kind. You have, as I’ve often stated, a real feeling for them, for their softness, their color, and their sweet innocent faces. {ok, well, not the peregrine falcon, lol.} I prefer a Junco, but I enjoy anything you do.

I can see why you couldn’t choose one! I like them all but I know someone who loves bunnies so that’s my vote. If my painting comes out ok I can give it to her. 🙂

So this is my bad for not reading the title line carefully enough to catch the change of date. I rely on a notification from Youtube and had already watched the bluejay video. Obviously, I need to change my process if I want to keep up. This was a lovely painting but I also would love to do the 3 little chicks or the one chick on the grey board.
I’ll catch you again next week. Hope your outing tomorrow is fun!
