Hi friends! I hope you are enjoying some summer travels,even if your traveling only consists of the nearest beach, park or hiking trails. Truth be told those are my favorite kind! I have been asked to be the guest designer at Mixed Media Monthly Challenge and travel is this month’s theme. I thought it was fitting to share this photo I took of a painting I did today from my Kayak. I decided to take a pick right away incase me or my painting fell in the drink LOL! It’s been known to happen. 🙂
We did some hiking yesterday and found a beautiful secret beach and a fantastic super high scary rope swing but alas I did not have my swimsuit so I did not partake but I am going to return. I had my paints with me but there was no time to sit and paint as the hike took longer than expected. But my sister showed me an amazing secret beach about 15 minutes from my hometown and I did take a fevered 7 minutes to paint this before my kids were toweled off and ready to get ice cream. I would have had plenty of time to paint but the water was so nice I had to jump in!

These are beautiful! I would love a tutorial on one or both of these! I want to learn to paint plein air and if I could produce a painting that is half as good as these, I would be thrilled. Perhaps if you do a tutorial on one of these or a similar scene, it could be filmed as you paint plein air?

What is that on which second photo is placed…wooden table..??so nice…it would be nice to paint that…may be place some bright flower on that and paint…

I like these very quick sketches because you have to decide what’s important enough to paint and what isn’t. That’s my main problem with copying pictures … you have so much time to copy all the endless details and end up with a mess if you don’t watch out!
I especially like the water in the second sketch … you can sense a breeze moving over it!
I read you like W&N pans better than the tubes … do you mind telling us why? I had to buy a tube of Prussian Blue because the Prbl I bought in a pan was as if it had a layer of laquer covering it … I had to SCRUB some paint off with a bristle brush and it still was only a faint hint of color. I bought several other pans of Prbl at different shops and they were all the same. So it was switching over to a tube or doing without. After buying a huge tube of Prbl now I’m wondering what’s going to happen next?!

If you wanted to do tutorials, they are BOTH good candidates! I love the loose free and easy look of those paintings. What is that little paint box you are using? Where did you find it? It looks well-loved. You have inspired me to get my paints out today. Thanks!

This was great. Yes, I’d love a little tutorial. I’d like to know if you sketch first or just jump right to painting. I also put in too many details.Also how you use the water brush best. I’m wondering how you rinse and reload with a new color. I seem to need a lot of water. Enjoy every minute of your plein air painting.

Both sketches are good. Would love to watch videos on both. Also the wooden table I guess in the second picture is so cool…I am imagining a flower or a flower vase on that table would be cool picture to paint. what do you think 🙂 . For a change can you please do a tutorial on flower(s) placed like on a table or on ground or on grass or any surface ( instead of in a vase or some background which you have done many and I like each and everyone though and would like more and more glass flower vase tutorials too)

Of course, I would love to see a video as I watch them over and over just so I can at least try to mimic you….now that is funny for me since no way could I ever achieve art on your level, but I keep trying…Thank you so much for your videos, they are fun to watch and you have such great tips and ideas for doing things, not just art.

I adore this little painting, I already painted and followed the tutorial. But I also find this post really inspiring. How your just exploring nature in your Kayak and doing something you love. I really need a day like this! I too live in the North East and after that long, drug out winter, I was looking forward to beach days this summer but summer will be gone again in the blink of an eye and my baby boy starts Kindergarten at the end of the month! 😦 I was feeling sorry for myself thinking about how time is flying and we haven’t even had one beach trip yet, life/work just got in the way. But this post is a reminder to go explore nature and paint whats close to home.
