Mixed Media Fun: Wax, Watercolor, Stencils, Stamping and Sprays!

Howdy friends. Time again to get out the art journal and have a play! I love working in a spectrum of colors, like the color wheel, putting colors next to their neighbors for really vivid results! The other neat thing is that you can get by with only 3 colors of spray ink and just let them overlap! This quote from Marc Chagall was perfect for this page: All colors are friends of their neighbors and the lovers of their opposites:

That quote means the the colors are pleasant with the surrounding colors on the spectrum but really pop when placed next to their complimentary color, that is the one opposite on the color wheel. Watch the video to learn some techniques with sprays, stencils, markers, stamps, wax and watercolor!

Here is the spread from the beginning of the video, I actually was doing a video of this and ran out of time and I felt that for the amount of techniques I was sharing it should be under 20 minutes…and I am too lazy to edit clips together LOL! Still, more than 20 minutes is a lot to ask you to sit through…in fact 20 is probably bad enough LOL!

  1. I bought liquid watercolors and made sprays like you suggested in an earlier video. I love them. Thankfully they are washable because I’m having a lot of fun making messes and trying different ways to use them.

  2. Love your art journaling. I have a question for “ask a crafter”. I would like to know what if any is the difference between water color paint and tempura washable paint. Would the tempura washable paint work for making the homemade glimmer sprays. The tempura also comes in metallic colors and would this work for the glimmer sprays? Thank you

    1. tempera is opaque and watercolor is transparent. the metallic tempra might work but the mica is probably too large of particle to fir through the sprayer.

  3. Great pages and I love the quotes. Wonderful tip about putting wax on top of the printing. I’ve ruined some pages with the ink blending so I will use your tip from now on – awesome tip!

  5. A couple of weeks ago I discoverd your youtube channel. WOW every evening I watch it so that I can start thinking what to do myself. I like to play with watercolor and I was thinking, can I use something to give it structuur with some sort of past. Tomorrow I go to the craftstore to buy some items you recomend. But I am living rural in Sweden so that means a one hour drive to the next town were they have a craft store.
Lots of love and happy crafting,
