Hi friends, you might call this tip frugal or you might call me a hoarder but after yesterday’s video tutorial on the torn frame a few people said they could not bear to waste the paper from the inside of the frame, well, neither can I. Here is what I do with the small bits of good quality paper I can’t stand to through out!

As I mentioned in the video I have used other punches on my scraps but find that I really only use the photo corners and buttons. I punch tags out of leftover holiday papers though because I always need more of those. Paper scraps that are larger than 2″x2″ get filed by color in my scrap paper hanging file folders. First of all, I don’t have extra money to throw away, but I only keep the bigger scraps. The small ones go in the trash as I used to save them all and it just got to be to much. And the small things I used to pre punch I never used as they weren’t the right color I wanted. So I guess I’m not real frugal. Sorry.

I too have a drawer for solid colored scraps and one for pattern scraps. When I have way too much I donate a big box of scraps to a grade school.

I keep all my scraps too. I mostly punch a buttons, birds or butterflies or any other small punch or die that I know I will use in other projects. I was taught as a child not to waste anything – large family plus kids from the children’s aid and not a lot of money – and those good lessons stay with me today. My larger scraps are sorted by colour in separate bags and filed away. If I have a lot of scraps in one exact colour or print, I will bag them separately….sorry, Virgo here, must be organized.

I mostly use solid color cardstock and I have a scraps folder for shades each of the basic 6 colors plus browns, greys, white and black. I always check there first before cutting into a full size sheet.
If you have lots of scraps try asking a teacher or children’s librarian if they could use punched shapes of different colors for art projects. It’s something you can do while watching TV or a movie and it’s better than throwing it away. ALWAYS ask first though, if they want it. Most of them have limited storage space, so your hard work might end up being tossed out.

I also used a expandable file…and once a year I go thru them and throw away the ones I know I can’t used…but…I always go to the file first to see if there is a piece I can used first before I go and get a new piece…

I dump it all in one very large drawer. When I need a small piece of this or that, I just open the drawer and rummage around and I can always find something that will work. If I cut something very small out of a piece of card stock, I put what’s left back with the card stock because I can use it for a card base at a later time.

I love the idea of saving the paper scraps. To make handmade paper. Can you show us a video on how you do that?

I give all my swaps, small scraps, etc. to a card maker at church who repurposes them as needed and sends to shut-ins. Makes it really easy for me give them away, and saves me tons of time!!! I get lots of swaps, but never send a card I did not make myself, so it is wonderful to see the scraps and cards put to a good use!

I guess you are frugal, crafty and a hoarder….but hey ho some of the scraps will come in as you never know eh? I too keep scraps and had to ‘let go’ when we moved. My hubby wasn’t too keen on me packing ‘rubbish’. So I have started collecting again. I now do journalling and mixed media so this uses up some of those hard to use scraps. Keep on posting …. love your posts.

I cut larger pieces into strips of various widths and sort by color, and toss anything really small into the recycling. I would love to see how you use your scraps to make custom paper! I have seen it demonstrated before, but it looks like a messy and not so cost-effective thing to do.

I keep my scraps with my full sheets of cardstock in a hanging file but put them in a page protector with that color so i can find exactly what I need without cutting up a new piece of paper needlessly.

When I make a card, I make 2, 3, or 4 similar at the same time usually. This uses up selected pretty papers and not many scraps left.
Scraps just get dumped in a cardboard box, once in a while, or when no project calling me, I just sit and sort through that box, usually finding inspiration for another card.
Or I play a game where you just REACH IN, grab a big handful of scraps, and then see what you can make from those scraps, adding as little in additional materials as possible.
We take our fun where we can find it, right? LOL

I keep most of my scraps on plastic bags, and usually when I need paper for something, I look through my scraps first. There are so many times I just need a small piece of something, and they really do come in handy.

Hi Lindsay! I was surprised to hear that others punch out leftover paper! I keep pieces with straight edges in a box for use later. Odd pieces I punch. I have some old punches that are hearts, stars, bears, houses and circles. Small punches. Anything that I can’t use on another card gets punched and kept in a little container all together. These are used as little confetti for inside cards! Insert just a little-colors and shapes all together-just a bit of added fun! It’s a nice touch (as long as you don’t go overboard!) and only tiny slivers go in trash! I know it sounds silly but that’s the idea! 🙂

Hi. Just wanted to say you can also shred some of those scraps and use it in gift boxes, gift baskets etc. instead of store bought paper grass.

I store my bigger scraps in pizza boxes marked by color, theme or prints. Little ones I punch butterflies and flowers and then forget I have them or where I put them.LOLI punch various sizes of flowers and take them to the art gallery where I assemble them when I’m babysitting the gallery.
