Hi friends! Today I am going to share a quick oil painting tutorial with you!
I was having a rough painting day, nothing was turning out right and I hated to trash the watercolor board I was working on so I collaged some book pages on, sealed it with mod-podge then stenciled and smeared it with acrylic paint. Once that was dry it was a perfect surface to use oils on. You can paint oils over acrylics but NOT acrylics over oils. Watch the video to see how I did it and how to fix common mistakes you might make if you are out of practice or using oils for the first time:

I hope you found that helpful. Let me know if you want to see more oil tutorials because I do enjoy working with them. I will go back to the drawing board with the watercolors I was attempting so don’t worry watercolor fans. I think I was having such a hard time because it had been a while since I had a watercolor tutorials so I was pushing myself to create SOMETHING and that pressure just crippled my creativity. I think it happens to us all. It is hard for creativity to thrive under pressure. I have found when that happens to just cut my losses and try something new, AKA oils. While I always enjoy your painting tutorials, I prefer the watercolor tutorials. Your ease with watercolor always astounds me. You might even inspire me to take a class. Do you need to know how to draw before taking a watercolor class? I am such a beginner!

it depends on the class, if it was a class in still file of figure painting you wuld struggle if you could not draw bit not as big of a deal if you were doing landscapes. Contact the teacher and ask:) I would have mini drawing lessons in my adult classes for beginners.

I feel the same way as Maria and would also like to know if you need to know how to draw before taking watercolor class? I can’t draw my husband is patiently teaching me, I can now draw a 3D box and I’m really good with grapes on a vine and the leaves, lol.

Yes, I miss your watercolor tutorials! Do some with “blending out” the scenes you create with stamps. Altenew has some wonderful fine line stamps with flowers and hummingbirds – I would love to see what you do with them! They take Distress Inks very well.

I love card-making everyday but when my creative juices come to a halt I go to journaling and that frees my mind because there is no rhyme or reason when I journal it’s just fun crazy art. Creative juices get back in line after doing several art journal pages.

hi lindsay from glow:)… loved your painting tutorial… i just sat here so enthused to watch waht you called a dark dead piece come to life using white to recapture it:) awesome… it makes me think i cud do it but i am apparently not that brave.. i have started making land scenes and gathering tips online because never fear i will beat this timidness for painting… but i try my pieces on card fronts.:) Love you 4 sharing your mistakes.. You probly found that out but its so important to watch a possible negative get turned into a positive… you make it look so easy… so thanks for your work and time you go in to teach people how to do this.. kind of is a parallel to life 🙂 and often my sentiments arise in my own head from inspiration like this… sweet… 3 cheers, love glow

You are so talented!! I thought I was the only one who had bad painting days. I find I need to be in the zone. Calm and no distractions. Even a phone call can just upset the balance for me. So how many out there have a calm life!! It is wonderful when it turns. Hang in there.

I was having a creative block last evening. I had gotten all my water based oil paints out, brushes, and canvas board, even sorted the colors by families, but didn’t have any ideas of what to paint. Fixed a broken lid for a jar of fast dry medium. Went through all my coloring books for ideas, nothing peaked my interest. Went through my trace and paint w/c books, same thing. So I started browsing the internet for oil painted pictures. Found one of those sites for “starving artists” and was amazed. They want thousands of dollars for things I’d consider mistakes!!! So I saved pics of my favorites (no naked bodies!), mostly animals; and by then it was way past my bedtime. Today I will try again–maybe paint a blue cat or something. LOL I wonder how many thousands of dollars I could sell it for…

This was such a great tutorial! I think a lot of us would enjoy a basic oil painting 101 video on the types of paint, what materials to use, etc. Your basic tutorials like that are always so helpful!!! T
