Happy Mother’s Day to the Not-so-Perfect Moms

Hi friends, it’s mother’s day here in America and I want to wish all of the moms out there a great day. I almost skipped this week. My experimental piece this week is so far from perfect. I started off strong but made questionable choices along the way and was pretty sure I ruined it by the end. Usually, I don’t let bad art get me down (bad art’s better than no art eh?) But I have been in a funk for weeks and it just added to the despair. Honestly, I can’t even evaluate this painting because I can’t separate myself from the struggle of creating it.

20190507_160116.jpg

I think we often can’t evaluate ourselves from a distorted perspective and I think it’s doubly true for mothers. We ruminate on mistakes, wonder if we did the right things to give our children the magical childhood they deserve and feel shame and guilt when we see other mothers doing a way better job than us. I’ve pretty much stopped going on Facebook because it makes me feel like a failure at life. So, other less-than-perfect moms of the world, you are not going to see a photo of me with perfect hair and makeup, looking thin at a brunch buffet while my family gazes on adoringly. This is not Hallmark, instead, you can see me in grimy paint clothes and no makeup with my hair clipped up creating a mediocre painting.

I thought about listing all of the things that were making me feel sad and insecure lately but that was too depressing and I think it’s a common thread that connects us all. There is so much pressure on women to be attractive, thin and successful and mothers have to raise well-adjusted humans on top of that. It’s overwhelming for all of us. Every. Single. One. Of. Us. Even beautiful people with huge spotless houses sipping Mai-Ties on the beach that we see on Instagram. They’re a hot mess, I’m sure they are fretting over how many “likes” their photo is getting just like I am fretting over why a youtube video is doing poorly or where the track uniform is that my child was supposed to return last year. We. Are. All. Hot. Messes! Every one of us! We are all doing our best and if we need to take a day off then gosh darn we deserve it! Yes, we can do it all but we should also be able to cut ourselves a little slack and enjoy our messy and imperfect lives and let go of the guilt of not being the perfect mom. Ladies, are you with me? Happy mother’s day and til next time happy crafting!

  3. Hang in there lil momma we all need a break sometimes at life …. we as moms need to be blessed for what we have and love our selfs more and not worry about the lady who is looking beautiful with her nose up in the air and look at her and think well she must be missing something in her life lol. We women are beautiful starting on the inside out . We make this world spin without each one of us doing our part whatever that maybe it just wouldn’t spin … big hugs keep being you cause your good at it 🙂

  4. I love your painting. It reminds me of my failed painting that sat idly for a couple of months then finished. Now, the flowers are weird and misshapen but it’s one of my faves. Let it sit around and stew for a while an see if you have a new perspective.

I identify with your emotional funk. Even though I live in a sunny clime, I always get depressed in October when the days start gettin short. Our neurological system needs light to generate serotonin, and because of your location, you have been sadly deprived. As the days lengthen, You will again be the joyful, fun person you are meant to be.

Thank you for all your wonderful teaching. I have just recommended you to a friend I have out of state. Joyce Bryan Sent from my iPad

  6. I’m sorry that you’ve been feeling sad and out of sorts lately, Lindsay. It’s so ironic because you’re the one who makes all of us feel good about our attempts at art. You keep us inspired, motivated, and curious to learn more. You hand us courage, pride, and amazing learning experiences. There are things I’ve done in your online classes that I never had the courage to try before. In fact, because of what I’ve learned in your classes, I had the courage to participate in the Brooklyn Art Library Sketchbook Project this year. I felt so proud that I was able to accomplish a completed sketchbook. And it’s because of you, Lindsay, that I was able to do that.
Lindsay, please try to focus on all the positives you give the world. Because of you, there is more art in the world, more beauty, more motivation and desire to keep learning, more relaxation and calm that’s felt by the people you tutor. You make our lives more enjoyable, more restful and more fun. You hand us a huge dose of pride every time we finish one of your art projects. And you know what, Lindsay? Even when we produce a piece of art that we personally are dissatisfied with, we’re still better off than we were before we did that piece because we learned something in the process and we got to relax while doing it.
Also keep in mind that all of us try to do our best every day. But my best today may not be at the level it was yesterday, but it may be better than tomorrow. One day I may be well-rested, healthy, full of energy, and my best is at a Superwoman level. Another day my arthritis is especially painful, or I had a poor night’s sleep, or I don’t feel well, or someone I love is being critical of me. On that day, my best won’t be at the level it was on another day, but I need to give myself a break by realizing that it was the best I could do with what I had to give on that particular day, so it’s still okay.
Another thing, Lindsay, how many moms out there can create the beautiful drawings of their children that you do?
Give yourself a break, Lindsay, know that there are budding artists out here that love you and whose lives are better because of you, and have a Happy Mother’s Day!

  7. I love the saying from Tale of Two Cities. “Its the best of times, its the worst of times” Because, that’s life. As a senior citizen I look back on when my kids were growing up and wonder why I made such a big deal of things that now I would just take in stride. If you have been in a funk for awhile, maybe there is something you need to change up in your own life to take the pressure off. Change can be good. You have a long life ahead and there will be times to stand by your kids and that might be when it counts most, rather than on a daily basis. Love watching your videos and your enthusiasm. You have been blessed with talent, however you chose to use it. But thanks for sharing it to all of us now..

  9. Another day that is highly promoted in a well orchestrated effort to have people part with their money to “celebrate” mom…(or dad in June)….every day mom takes on the day…the kids, the spouse, the house, the chores, the shopping, the meals, the school, the parks/games/parties……carries on no matter the state of mind….sometimes achieving “great job mom”, sometimes falling far short of expectations…. “not meatloaf again”… sometimes feeling overwhelmed with love, sometimes feeling overwhelmed with failure….motherhood is probably the hardest job anyone can have…I don’t need or want a mother’s day once a year…I have a mother’s day everyday….

  10. Happy Mother’s Day, Lindsay! It seems you are being a little hard on yourself about being perfect. One of the reasons I love following you, taking your classes, and practicing along with you on YouTube is because you are so down-to-earth. You are also totally honest when you make a mistake and you explain to us how to figure your way out of it. Thank you for all of the inspiration you provide for your Frugal Crafter groupies. I wish I could give you a big hug. Enjoy your day and your family. You are loved far and wide!

  12. I think that I do terrible paintings, too. I tend to scream, then get upset and cry my eyes out. Then, when I’m at the end of my rope, I tie a knot and hang on…. And tell myself, “What a wonderful abstract I have created!” Lindsay, WHAT A WONDERFUL ABSTRACT YOU HAVE CREATED! 🙂

  13. Happy Mother’s Day Lindsay! And you only FEEL like a hot mess, you aren’t one! But you are right, we all feel that way, at least anyone that I would want to be friends with. Love your art and YouTube and classes! You’ve helped me to feel less like a hot mess with art and enjoy creating! Thank you! I like this painting also, seems more of a modern art style than some of your paintings, but still you and I like it. I’m 60 now and finally accepting me for me. So I think you do start to feel more comfortable and accepting of yourself as you get older. Just too bad that it takes so long. Blessings, and hope you have a wonderful day with your family.

  14. I had a good Mom not a perfect Mom but that’s okay because I wasn’t a perfect daughter. My children are raised and I was a good Mom but not perfect but that’s okay my children weren’t perfect either. I was a working Mom and not always there and I did worry but my grown children love me and they think I did okay raising the five of them. Good enough for me. Now if I could just get my daughters and daughters-in-law to relax. They’re all good Moms and I wish they’d realize that that’s good enough. I try to let them know all the time that they’re good Moms too and hope that helps. Enjoy your day and take care of yourself.

Happy Mom’s Day.just when you think of all that you can do or should have done to be better at being a mom, try to remember the moms whose children are addicted to drugs, alcoholics, or have other humongous problems and worries about their children. And then you can sit back and say hey I know I’m not so bad.I have great kids and all is right in my world.

  17. Happy Mothers day to you Lindsay. You are being too hard on yourself. I admire you for all your accomplishments. In the art you do. The way you share your art skills with us and I don’t know you on a one to one basis but,. I can tell you are a devoted mom. In the way you are and speak of your children. Painting them and all. A proud Mom and that is most important from a mom. Please remember if your heart is with your children and you are there for them and they are well provided for then you are the best mom they can have. Now, I like your painting and I think it has a lot of interest also. I know you are the one teaching me stuff, but I still know what I like. Again Happy Mothers day you are a great person and Mom. I wish I knew you personally I think we might have fun. Perfect I am not either, but the love of a mother is just immeasurable. I miss mine everyday and wish I can have one more conversation. I ask her question, but sadly no more answers so it is a day that is hard to go through for me.

  22. I’m now 63 years old, and the best gift i’ve given myself in life is permission to be good enough. Could I have done that meeting/cake/painting/speech/parenting chat even better? Yeah, almost for sure. But did it get the job done? Yep, and now I have new jobs to do, so get on with them – those are over. It’s not about the painting – you’ll never be Vermeer. It’s about you being happy and inspirational to the people who are infected by your joy of creation. Just be Lindsay. That’s enough.❤️

  24. Dear Lindsay,

I am such a big fan, and while most of my art is created in my head, you are a constant inspiration! As a 70 year old mother of daughters, I am going to fuss at you. I know from your posts that WINTER has been weighing on you. You need to take care of yourself and your health! It might be good to check in with your doctor and have some labs run. You are so right in that so much is expected of women in today’s world. (Men don’t have that kind of pressure.). You are so gifted and so very generous to share with your followers, and I am sure your community, while supporting your family and friends I am so serious about you seeing your doctor. Your body may be trying to get your attention. Women, especially mothers, put themselves last. To be your best for all those who depend on you, you must take good care of yourself!

Now that I have preached at you, I want to thank you for all you do. And to wish you a Happy Mother’s Day!

Amazing how time changes our perception of our art! Perhaps it is not as you envisioned it, but, the finished painting is still quite lovely and beautiful!!

  27. First off, I LOVE your painting. It’s not your usual style, so maybe that’s why you are so hard on yourself. It’s vibrant and full of life and energy. It could easily hang in a gallery in Boston (or anywhere). You are always lifting everyone up, and I know you are sincere, but it must be exhausting to do that, teach, critique, create, and be a great mom/wife/sister/friend/etc. As a bereaved mom and then a single mom for two thirds of my daughter’s life I can’t tell you the doubts and downs I have had, but I realized I was always doing the best I could. Have a happy Mother’s Day, and take some down time for yourself to celebrate the wonderful person you are. If you asked your kids, I’m sure they will tell you no one could be a better mom than you!

  28. yah-I made some bad art this week too-somehow reassuring that you did also(but, I love the flowers) I’m so sorry you experienced the “low downs.” but its unrealistic for us to expect that you wouldn’t some time or other. We are so lucky that we have your beautiful face and cheerful voice to share with us how to improve our passion.( I can’t stand sped up videos or presenters who silently paint in front of us as is we can pick it up by osmosis–and please can you just tell be what that color is or explain that technique?) Sorry for the rant. Anyway, I hope you are enjoying this Mother’s Day with your loved ones.

Your painting really is NOT as awful as you think it is; it’s just not looking how you imagined it would. But it IS something different for you…a bit abstract art, combined with a dash of Gauguin, and a lot of Georgia O’Keeffe!
I had a terrible time with a painting I did a while back ( I’d join your new club, but don’t know how to post pictures ) and worked on it, worked on it, probably OVER WORKED it, but everyone else loves it, so buck up and don’t be so hard on yourself!

  31. Lindsay, you are 100% right! Please lighten up on yourself, we are not Superwomen. Look at all the work you do while raising a family, please, give yourself a break! Most people, myself included, do not share the bad or hard parts of their lives on Facebook and how many likes or not is not important. What is important is that you can say you did the best you could and if that isn’t good enough, tough, you cannot get blood out of a stone, you did your best. Life is not about giving your kids a magical childhood but teaching them to be good, caring people and how to get along in life because life is not fair and not everyone deserves a prize for participation. Life is hard and it takes work and kids need to know they need to share in that work. So that being said, do some things that make you happy and if the house isn’t spotless, have your kids help. We all have struggles, we just tend not to put them out there. Take care of yourself and remember it is ok to ask for help. Thanks for all you do for so many of us who would never have been able to paint were it not for you. I have fibromyalgia with chronic fatigue and arthritis so mostly paint from bed but found you on You Tube when I was trying to learn watercolour. Thanks to you and a few other teachers on You Tube, I can escape the pain for a while while I paint. I have learnt so much from you in the past 3 years since I started with watercolours, thank you so very much. I hope this helps. 🤗❤️Joy

  32. I’ve been in a funk lately too. Mostly cause my one and only child is graduating high school in 2 weeks and I’m going to miss the public school years and volunteering there. Also, I’m rehashing all the years and things I could have done better or different to make him even better than he is now, which is a waste of my time because I love him just the way he is. But you always wonder. And his future is currently uncertain as he has not accepted a college while deciding whether to stay home or go away. I’d love him to stay home cause we love his company, but I also think its my fault he’s maybe not ready to go away. Did I fail him for not making him more independent or did I do too well at creating a loving environment at home that he doesn’t want to leave?!? I’ve been so funky I haven’t created and mailed his graduation invites/announcements yet, which is stressing me out too. And I need like 15 or 20 graduation cards, of which I made 3 last year and none so far this year. Ugh! I’m going to mess up something I should be looking forward to, and why? Pressure probably. I’m staying off Facebook and Pinterest right now… I can’t bear to see how other moms are rocking the graduation parties and decorations right now. Hang tight. Tis a season for everything and without an occasional down time, we wouldn’t appreciate the high times as much, would we?

  34. I thank you for reminding me that I am not the only one who is discontent. As I age, less is possible, despite what those young optimists say. I need more rest and my body does less. I hang in there because I know no one else is exactly like me (a Christian belief), therefore I have something to contribute that may be helpful to someone else. Making cards brings so many smiles to the recipients. Plus I get the luxury of making them exactly the way I want to. No one knows if they aqua paper isn’t the shade I hoped was in my stash.

  45. I hear ya, sistah!! Loud and clear. I only have one child. I did my best, was such a hands-on mom ensuring we always got plenty of fresh air at the playgrounds and animal parks and doing fun kid stuff. Putting my child first, going parttime after she was born (my mom watched her the 2 and a half days a week that I worked) — doing it all when my husband was deployed for 15 months to a war zone. And yesterday, Mothers’ Day I looked back at all the times she just wanted to get away from me and pushed me away. I let her spend time with her friends (weekends and trips) scheduled youth group trips in the summer because she didn’t want to vacation with us anymore — always hoping she’d find her way back. It hasn’t happened yet. She spent this weekend with her boyfriend and his mother. She had no time to attend a family event with her grandmother and aunt on Saturday. I am finished blaming myself. I did nothing wrong and I need to stop analyzing 19 years and searching for the fault in myself. That’s no way to live. Sorry I’m venting but I am hurt. I barely look at Facebook anymore because it’s a fake and unhappy place. And it eats all your time. Time you could use to create good or not-so-good art and treating yourself kindly. I’m going to hit that post button before I chicken out and delete this.

You raised her to be confident and independent and even though she is being inconsiderate now she will come around (especially when she has kids of her own and realized all you did for her and how hard it is.) I am so glad you commented. Hugs:)

    1. Don’t fret mama, you did what was right for your kids. It’s so hard not to ruminate tho. 🙂

  50. Oh, Lindsey….what I finally learned is there is no perfect Mom, no perfect family. Some just cover the flaws better (or refuse to admit them even to themselves). We are who God made us to be, and no amount of Botox or hair dye will change that. You are beautiful and no doubt a great mother. You’re also a gifted artist. Embrace your craft and don’t fret if it turns out other than your plan for it. Your lilies have a modern, almost abstract look that I think is great-realistic in its subject but more interesting in the way the background nestles around the focal. My husband taught me to put away what troubles me in a symbolic drawer and bring it out in a few days. You’ll see it differently-if not yet, keep putting it away until it doesn’t trouble you and you can see it with fresh eyes and mind. It works! I promise! I hope you had a great Mother’s Day in spite of it all! 🤗

  51. I am sorry you aren’t having a great day Lindsay if you need a break take it! You have provided us with so much happy, I have over 400 bookmarks on my computer for your videos.. I think i do that because i don’t want to lose them! LOL I know you have a lot more then that and i will find them! LOL
You have provided me with so much happy! You teach us to let the kid out of us and play.
I can’t do a lot of things i used to be able to do because of a brain tumor i had removed when i was pregnant with my daughter, 31 years ago. My Aunt posted one of my paintings on FB I didn’t remember it and it was beautiful. Got me thinking….My daughter who is a Psychologist told me to check your videos. I did that a few years ago and now i am painting again, making cards, learning to sketch again, and so much happier because of you! I have more gumption now too because of you..
You have inspired me and changed my life added so much happiness and self esteem! Only because of you!
My Neurosurgeon has always told me don’t keep bad in your brain. Any bad, bad dreams, relatives that aren’t adding to your life, negative people, bad thoughts, bad movies, bad job. Let them or it go. Find happy when you’re sad even if it is just a cup of tea, a bar of soap, or a nice piece of lace to look at.(He knows me well and l love all that!) . I love old black and white movies too. The dialog is so funny. You have to see this movie called “Merrily We Live” with Constance Bennett and Brian Aherne it is so silly funny.. I get it out when I need a laugh.

You already focus on simple splendor and you “spark joy”. Your videos reflect that.. I love listening to you I learn a lot and laugh. I love your mistakes, i used to get frustrated when i would make a mistake but now i have learned to make something from them, not get mad and rip it up! + i keep trying now, don’t giving up still working on those roses too! LOL All i have learned from your videos have helped me in other life things. I am even losing weight when the tell me it is impossible because am hypopituitary. I have more strength and gumption now too.. I am calmer and don’t cry as much..

Now i am busy being happy painting, making cards, learning to sketch again.. Only because of you! I tell my husband you are my therapist so it is okay with him that i spend money on your classes and supplies.. I forget about everything when i am painting along with one of your videos, even to eat! LOL
So I just wanted to say you are so valuable to me, but if you need a break you have to take care of yourself or you won’t be there for us.. I know from being in some of your live videos how much everyone loves you.. Love yourself Lindsay you are awesome, beautiful and an excellent “Therapist”!
You are a very good mom i can see it in how you paint your beautiful daughter.. If she is a teen now giving you grief it will pass. Just don’t let it get to you it is not you just them growing up..

Hope you had a happy Mothers day and thanks a million no billion trillion for all you do.. Took me forever to type this i wix up my mords all the time.. Silly brain! LOL Laugh laugh laugh.. None of us are perfect..
    Hugs to you!

  52. Hello Lindsay and a belated Happy Mother’s day! I do a lot of “belateds”, even when I know that an event is on the horizon I don’t get my timing right. I’ve missed so many of my grandchildren’s birthdays that I call myself a bad grand-ma! I’ve come to accept that I am not perfect. None of us are. You are a wonderful motivator and a great inspiration to me, and by the look of all the comments that precede mine, to many other women who look forward to your posts and who get so much inspiration and encouragement from you. Ignore the trolls, unless their criticism is useful as a learning opportunity. Have a wonderful week and please don’t stop doing all the good that you do do! ( I broke some sort of grammatjc rule with that last sentence, but who cares!) 🙂

  53. Putting all your thoughts and worries out here takes real courage, as does the crafty things you share with us. Opening ourselves up, sharing our ‘down deep’ feelings….big time courageous things to do. Thank you for trusting your fans…and please read each and every comment and take our gratitude for your presence in our lives to heart. No one is perfect….play the hand God gives you to the best of your ability. Remember too…children don’t deserve ‘perfect’, they deserve love and good role models who are emotionally healthy. Peace of spirit, Lindsay.

  54. Dearest Lindsay, I am a fairly new Youtuber. After retiring, I was looking for inspiration to get back to my love of art and creating in general and then I found you. You were my first and most enthusiastic subscription! I loved you at first sight (and sound!). Your joy is so contagious, your personality so appealing I knew I would always benefit from your videos. And I needed to hear, “So what if you make a mistake, you learned something didn’t you?” I love how real you are. I even enjoy your furnace kicking on and giving “us” something to pretend to be annoyed at. I love that your studio looks like my dream space but not something out of a magazine. I guess what I’m trying to say is that your authenticity is so refreshing to my spirit. And your loving nature is such a blessing in today’s world. I understand that we all have tough times and I wish i could embrace you and lift you up. Please do what you need to do to take care of you, we all want you happy, healthy and aware of the difference you’ve made in our lives.

  55. Lindsay, I’m with you! I stopped looking at Facebook a long time ago. It was too demoralizing to see others living seemingly exciting, perfect lives with well-adjusted, conflict-free families. I could not begin to dream of taking European vacations and cruises to exotic destinations every couple of months let alone every couple of years and never will.

It’s always hard to be the judge of your own work and how successful you felt you were in creating it. From what I see though, I see your “experimental” painting as beautiful.

I have been a subscriber to your You-tube channel for quite a long time and thoroughly enjoy and draw so much inspiration from your videos. I love you because you are REAL! You’re not pretentious, you make art approachable for anyone willing to try. I love your enthusiasm for creating art that shines through each and every one of your videos.

Keep your mind focused on all of your many successes and you will come through this difficult time.
