You Could Sell That, but do You Want to?

Hi friends, do you ever feel like you need a reason to make something? I had been feeling like it was a wasted effort to create something just for me. I thought I was alone in feeling this until I read this article and I realized that I was not the only one feeling this way and with the popularity of social media the need for approval of our creations has gotten in the way of us creating just for fun. Have a listen to the video and let me know what you think in the comments below.

It seems like in this age of the side hustle “having a hobby” is not good enough. We need to pressure ourselves into making a living from it. I know I have encouraged thousands of people to turn their passion into profit and while there is nothing wrong with that you should have something that is just for you that you don’t have to feel obligated to share if you don’t want to.

It’s like the food blogger who creates beautiful meals but they never get to eat a hot meal because it’s cold by the time they have photographed it. You deserve to enjoy your hobby, that’s why we have them. If you find yourself feeling that your art isn’t good enough unless it sells or gets 100 likes on Instagram it might be time to step back.

True honesty here, I totally need to practice what I preach! It’s hard to grow when everything you do is being watched and judged, that’s why it’s important to have that private creative time. It’s also important not to equate sales and likes with your self-worth. You can forget what you even like anymore when the approval of others guide your creativity. Take a bit of quiet time to doodle in a sketchbook or work on a painting that you want to make, art doesn’t need a practical reason. The personal fulfillment and enjoyment are enough.

I hope this little rant was helpful to you:) Happy crafting!

  1. You are so right, Lindsay! I think that’s one of the things that separates adults from children. Children pursue art as an adventure, not concerned about the outcome while adults seem to need someone or something to validate their use of time, so outcome becomes way too important. I know that’s been plaguing me and I’m trying to stop.

  2. You are so correct. I have been crafting for over 40+ years. I do what I love and I make what I make For my friends and family. When others comment and indicate I should sell my items at a craft fair I tell them that I am not an assembly line and it’s to stressful.

Ps. Thank you for that vid on the steampunk kit. I love it. I cannot wait until my husband sees his-day card

  3. I really connected with this video. How many times have I been told, you’re so talented, you should sell your work? You want to accept the compliment, but with it comes self-deprecation (unintentionally created by the complimentor) in the form of “what’s wrong me that I’m not selling my work?”. Thank you so much for this video.

  4. I know from experience that the joy goes out of what you love when it becomes a job. Many years ago I took Tole painting classes, got good enough that the teacher wanted me to help teach. That developed into teaching my own classes and all I did was prepare for classes and then teach them. I went from Tole to learning oil landscapes and now I LOVE watercolors. I won’t teach and I won’t sell. If someone admires something I’ve painted, I lovingly give it to them and I am free to practice and paint anything I want to. No pressure and no loss of the joy!

  5. Lindsay, I have changed my whole philosophy on my art this year. Took down an expensive website I carried for two years with no results, stepped back too. So now I actually give away more art and am happy doing so. Life’s too short to try and please everybody please yourself and enjoy!

  6. I have never wanted to sell my jewelry, leather or fused glass crafts. People have asked, my feeling is that then I HAVE to do it, and feel stressed to complete the task( eg: repairing jewelry). It is different if I offer . I just give them as gifts, and enjoy it more.

  7. I’m so glad that you have addressed this issue. I have oodles of paintings, sketches, pastels, colored pencil drawings etc. I’m always second guessing myself about what I should do with it all. I just need to take a deep breath and enjoy them, learn from them. They are part of me.

  8. One of the special things about your site, Lindsay, is the way you share your “heart” with us and incorporate life lessons into your messages as well.  Thx you.

  9. Someone asked me the other day if I would complete some art for their house. I was flattered but said no. I told them if you see something I’ve done and want it, then it’s yours, but I can’t create to order. I also had a friend that had an accident call me today. I’ve sent her two watercolor cards, and she asked if I would go to dollar tree and get her some frames for them…she would pay me….it gave me such joy that she wants to keep them. Creating is for my enjoyment, but giving it, rather than selling it, is ten times more important. Thank you for sharing your true self always.

  10. Yes, I just did that in making a mixed media cover for my watercolor journal just because I’d been so busy with a writing project that I felt I really needed to do something just for me. I’m not going to sell it because it’s for my watercolor and gouache pieces that I do just for playing anyway. I find that it’s a necessity for me and it helps keep me normal…did I just say that? Honestly, what’s normal? LOL

  11. Thank you, thank you for sharing this and everything you share…it’s so funny but last night as I sat doing some painting…I said to my husband I am not going to watch the clock to see how long it takes, I am just going to do it for the fun of it because I enjoy it…I don’t have to sell everything! Joy is the fruit of the spirit…I believe we do best when we remember why we do anything…our thoughts…intentions and so find our peace

  12. We certainly do fall into that trap!!!! I had an idea a month or so ago and yet I did nothing about it…UNTIL last Friday – I bought the die and did what my heart was leading me to do and it’s beautiful…made 12 cards with this idea! The idea was for me alone, not to fulfill a challenge or a swap or for a sale…and I had the opportunity to give one card away today! What a JOY!!!! By the time I do all the challenges, swaps, and demos I am usually too tired to ‘play’, but constantly want to!!! This experience and your reminder is a wakeup call! Thanks Lindsay!!!!

  13. Hi Lindsay 🙂
Right on Lindsay!!! A number of us go through the same dilemmas as you do and it can be difficult to block out of our minds what other people say that we should do this or that. We have to try and look in to our hearts and say, “What do I really want to do because I really like/love doing this and it gives me pleasure?”
Thank you for your video and the good message you have given us.
You are a treasure and I am blessed to have found your website and I learn from all your videos.
    Take care.

  14. Thanks! I am not on Instagram. I have shared some with two other bloggers, but really, I mostly make cards because I like to do it and now I have an outlet for my creative juices when they start to flow. I tried to sell some cards, once, but none sold, even at half price. I figured that if they wouldn’t pay at least a dollar less than Hallmark, they didn’t deserve my creations!!! Never really tried again, but now I mostly create cards for gifts for two people, and as a way to let my family know how much I love them. I don’t want to get caught in that place where I HAVE to produce to meet a deadline or to create to someone else’s dictates and tastes. This is my only artistic outlet and I am ok with that! I appreciate the stepping back to analyze pep talk to remind me of that. Thank you again.
