Michele’s Push-Pop Cupcake Recipe!

When I saw the fabulous push-pop cupcakes from Michele’s Movie Party I posted Thursday I had to have the recipe and instructions!

Thankfully she was happy to share! She said she used these push-pop containers from amazon.com. They are disposable bust they can be washed and reused {love that!}

Push Up Tube For Ice Cream (Kit of 100 pcs included with lids) - Push Up Tube For Ice Cream (Kit of 100 pcs with lids included)

Here is what she said:

“Since Martha knows how to get things done, I used her recipe for chocolate cake:  http://www.marthastewart.com/346395/one-bowl-chocolate-cake
and added chocolate chips to the batter.  I mean really, so many things in life are just a little bit better with the addition of some chocolate chips!
Same for her recipe for vanilla cake:  http://www.marthastewart.com/315436/versatile-vanilla-cake
I baked them in 9×13 pans and torted (is that a word?) after they were cool, but I think next time I just might divide the batter between two 9×13 pans and skip the torte step.

The frosting was a simple buttercream recipe
Marshmallow buttercream
2 sticks of unsalted butter
4 cups of powdered cane sugar
a pinch of salt dissolved in 1 tsp of water
1 tsp of marshmallow flavoring (I use LorAnn Oils)
1/4 tsp of Almond extract **
Cream the butter and liquid until creamy and slowly add the powdered sugar until all incorporated and it looks like frosting.  I’ll add a tsp of milk, 1/2 & 1/2 CoffeeMate or whatever I have available until it gets to the creamy consistency I need.  More liquid, thinner icing.  I made this pretty thick so probably one 1 or 2 tsp of liquid max.

Orange Dreamcicle Frosting
follow the recipe above just substituting 1 tsp orange extract for the Marshmallow flavoring and i substituted 1/4 tsp of vanilla extract** for the almond.
**I tend to play fast and loose with the extract adding a little more vanilla or almond as I think is necessary.

Then I just cut the cake into little circles using a round cookie cutter that about the same size as the push-pop container (http://www.amazon.com/Ateco-5357-Piece-Plain-Cutter/dp/B00004S1CI/ref=sr_1_1?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1307639715&sr=1-1)  I subsequently put the cookie cutter down the garbage disposal.  I recommend you skip this step. 🙂
Pipe a dollop of frosting into the bottom of the push-pop layer with cake and frosting until you reach the top.  Top with sprinkles and you are ready to party!
Hope you get a chance to make them.  The push pops were fun to eat and I saved the containers (yes, I am cheap), washed them out and plan to use them again! “

Thanks so much for sharing this recipe and idea, I will definitely try this! Michele use the cupcake wrappers from the Movie Party Kit to decorate the push pop containers, genius!
