Hi friends, I have been wanting to create a beginner stamping series for a long time. Many of us got into stamping 10+ years ago and we built on techniques as new products became available. For new stampers entering the hobby it is overwhelming. This summer I am going to bring you a weekly class right here on my blog and YouTube Channel teaching you the basics of stamping using a limited palette of supplies so you can try it out without going broke. In this first lesson I will go over the basic supplies we will be learning in the class.
Of course there are many more supplies on the market for stampers and we will look at some of them later in the series but these I find to be the most versatile and useful to new stampers.
Supplies:
Stamps-your choice but I recommend versatile images you can use for many occasions as well as a few sentiments (greetings)
*If you are using clear or cling stamp you will also need a stamp mount (you can use a piece of plexiglass or clear plastic packaging if you want in a pinch)
Waterproof black or brown inkpad, I recommend Ranger Archival
Color media-I will be using these 3 items in the course but you do not need to have them all if you are just starting out, pick the one that you think fits your style more. Look for multi packs to keeps your costs down.
Waterbased markers: A few good brands are Spectrum Aqua, Tombow, Memento, Stampin Up, Letraset Aqua, Pitt or Distress. I will be using Spectrum Aqua
Dye ink pads: Memento, Hero arts, Distress, Lawn fawn, Stampin Up, Altenew or any brand dye inks, the smaller pad multipacks are great if you have little storage space and or budget
Watercolor pencils: Prima, Derwent, Faber Castell, Reeves and others are available. I’ll be using Prima
White cardstock: Any kind you can pick up from the office supply or craft store is fine.

Great…I was wondering about stamping equipment and inks….dye inks vs pigment inks? And I wasn’t sure about the clear acrylic stamp mounts. I’m from the time of the rubber stamps glued onto wood blocks! I missed these last years of learning to use stamping methods! This is going to be so helpful! Thanks, Lindsay!

Thank you, this is so great. I am a beginner stamper and leared for so far with much falling and a few get up. I struggled with ink; paper and water for the inktense pencils. I also use digital stamps that l print on my canon printer but there l only can use markers, no water for the ink is bleeding. I am going to order an archival pad for sure !!!

I think this is a great idea, Lindsay – there aren’t enough really basic videos out there and it can be a bit intimidating when you start. Not knowing what you need to buy can be a problem too, and just starting off with basic inexpensive stuff is such a good idea, and you can develop later as you progress. I’ve never considered myself to be a very good stamper but I think I am improving with practice! I shall be very interested to see what other aspects you deal with on this course. Thanks!

Hi Lindsay, just got a chance to watch your Stamp Class #1, and it was very good, great advice about how to start your selections, and right off the bat things you can do to save money so that you may want to invest more in this craft that you’ll love. Loved the idea that you use acrylic picture frame, flipped as a way of organizing your wood stamps. I hope that as you continue these classes that you’ll incorporate how to get and keep your self organized. I’ve found your videos to be very enthusiastic and educational. Love your AAC as well, and the gals!
Oh also, I went to the Artneko site and found some great items, but at no point in placing the order did it ask for a coupon, mention a place to put your name or anything, so that I could get the free shipping. I have been stamping for awhile but have not actually done any stamping for awhile so this is very informative and very helpful for me. I am wondering are the spectrum aqua markers refillable. I would love to see a video using the Spectrum Aqua markers or if you have one can you direct me to it? I love all your videos. Thanks

I love your videos. You may have covered this but I didn’t find it. Did you ever explain the difference between ink pads, ie Memento, archival, distressed, dye, etc?
