Life’s a Beach!

Hi Friends! What a gorgeous day! It was 88 with a breeze at the lake and I spent the day with friends and their kids. Well, in the sense that the kids played merrily in the water as the moms chit-chatted on the shore;) I love beach days, probably too much because I hate to leave, the only people who have a harder time leaving the beach is my kids. I guess we need to soak up enough sun to get us through the long Maine winter…that is if sun can get through SPF 50 (in case you are wondering, it can.) We all came home a little pink (even with 3 coats of sunscreen) which made me feel guilty but also made me remember slathering up with the SPF 4 dark tanning oil with the lovely coconut fragrance I used to lay out with as a teenager, I can’t imaging doing that now, but there is something about that Hawaiian Tropic coconut fragrance that will always take me back. I think I ought to buy a bottle of it and crack it open in January when I need a boost LOL! I brought my KOI travel watercolor set with me and decided to paint. I chose to be inspired by my surroundings. I painted birch trees, beach roses, clouds and the lake.

I used the water brush that came with the kit, I refilled it 3 times from my water bottle to do these small paintings. I used the lid of the palette as a paper easel and it worked great. There is a finger hole on the bottom of the palette I just noticed today too, great for painting in the field. Next time I will bring 2 kits in case someone wants to paint with me. I offered to share with curious onlookers but they all declined, huh. I’m sure they just didn’t want to use my only set I had. I was able to put a stack of watercolor papers and the KOI palette in a quart freezer bag and put that in my beach bag as easy as pie! I think I will bring it every time! Yesterday I filmed a tutorial for painting a tropical beach (not Maine obviously) and I thought since I am feeling beachy I’d share it with you today!

It is fun to paint from memory or reference photos, you can’t beat the convenience, but I urge you to take your paints outside and be inspired by your surroundings. Don’t worry about people watching you or how it will turn out (notice, no masterpieces here) just observe and paint. I got to the beach early so I claimed the shady spot (right next to the birch tree I painted in fact) so I could easily watch my kids swimming while painting and that might be an option if you are shy about painting in public. I actually thought the clouds I painted were rubbish until I peeked at the photo I took all all the sketches and I thought, “hey, they look like clouds!” when before at the beach I thought “good grief, what a mess, I guess it’s time to quit!”  Paintings always look better with fresh eyes.

We are supposed to have great weather this week so I know there will be more swimming in our future! When you head out to the water make sure you bring your watercolors, you will be glad you did! Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

  4. Back in the sixties when the Indiana snow piled high, my sister and I would go get the Coppertone. We’d take big whiffs and be transported back to summer beach vacations in Texas and Florida. 🙂

  5. You never disappoint! Love your paintings. I would sit next to you and paint any day of the week. And I know what you mean about the smell of suntan lotion. Open a bottle that you used years ago and it ransforms you to that time. I love that about scents. Hugs

  6. your paintings are beautiful! You inspire me to go outside and do some painting. I know what you mean about the Hawaiian tropic coconut oil. I did that too, and the smell does bring me back to those days of carefree living. I love your videos and your blog. Thanks for sharing and inspiring!

  7. Wonderful! I have been painting/drawing all summer thanks to your tutorials and energetic spirit. And I’ve never had more fun with my art. Crafting is something I’ve done forever- beading, crochet, sewing, woodworking, etc… But I was always scared to to do anything artsy. Lack of confidence and high expectations I guess. 🙂 Now, I paint and draw and do not care what the end result is. I just LOVE the process. Best part is, it relieves stress, which makes me a better mommy and wifey. Haha. Thanks for all your videos and blogs! They make my day.

  8. You do great work, I really enjoy watching you paint. You’re my inspiration and now I have two of my friends hooked on your videos too!
I have what may be a dumb question. I’ve gone to the beach before and forgot to bring fresh water for painting. Can I use salt water from the ocean to do watercolors?
    Thanks so much, Bev

    1. Hi Bev, thanks for spreading the frugal crafter love! You will get a differnt efect with salt water, kind of granular probably but go ahead but make sure you wipe down your palette with fresh water when you get home, same deal if using lake/pod water to make sure you get all of the potential organ matter out of there that might cause molding. If you use a waterbrush you can just pour week bit of drinking water into the brush and be good to go without wasting too much drinking water;)

      1. Thanks Lindsay, I guess I’ll just try to remember to bring a spare bottle of water in my car always – for painting purposes. 🙂 Just to save my paints in case I forget to clean them off properly. I might try one painting just to see what effect I get.

  9. Hi Lindsay:)
Your beach painting and the other paintings are beautiful! While I was watching your video I was thinking it would be nice to be there, painting and soaking up the scenery and sun. You are such an inspiration to me, that I plan to try watercolour painting very soon. Thank you so much for doing your daily videos, you are my daily “ray of sunshine”. Here in Toronto, Ont., Canada it is 90 degrees F. with a humidex of 35+. I keep saying to myself “It is better than winter”!
When I start watercolour painting, is it better to start with dry paints or fresh paint out of a tube? Thanks.
Take care and enjoy the summer.

    1. When I use tubes I still squirt the paint in to a palette and let it dry then use it so I recommend working from dry paint. Do what is most convenient for you;)

  10. Ditto on the cloud request. I’ve watched you make clouds as part of other work you’ve done, but would love to hear you talk while you work your way through the creation of that picture. it is awesome.

  11. Great card Lindsay!! I really like watching your videos. Also…I too remember SPF 4 and “baking”. It seems like only yesterday. The smell of Coppertone can take me right back to those carefree summer days. Now it’s all about covering me and grandkids with SPF 50 and watching them like a hawk for any signs of getting pink. Have a good week and keep up those great videos!

  12. I enjoy your videos so much…and also LOVE the cloud card and I’d love to see a video of it. Why is it that “fresh eyes” make things look better?? I completed a pen and ink drawing the other day and put it into the drawer for my granddaughter to color!…only the next morning I looked at it…and saw a “better”drawing! Decided to keep it and make her a copy to color! 😉 Been trying out caffeine to get some of your energy. Keep giving us inspiration!

  13. Hey there Lindsay! What gorgeous paintings! I would so love it if you would show a tutorial on the clouds and the beach roses! I grew up in Rhode Island and the beach roses take me back along with that Coppertone Coconut lotion story…I spent many summer’s at misquamicut beach and I babysat all summer in Watch Hill, RI and there were beach roses everywhere! Thank you so much for your inspiration. You are so fun to watch and I always get inspired to try painting along with you! I even had my nine year old grand daughter start painting with me while we watch you!

  14. Hey Lindsay! I’ve been thinking of giving water colors a try but I’m on a tight budget. I can afford one small set. Which would you recommend? Winsor & newton 14 half pan set or the Koi 24 half pan set. Thanks for the advice and I love to watch your videos! My favorite beach painting is the large rose.

    1. the Koi is fun bUT the paint in the Windsor & Newton is higher quality, I’d go for the W&N. Happy painting!

  17. Oh, my! Your paintings are gorgeous. Love the cloud and the birch tree most, then the beach rose. You took me back to a time when I took a small set of water colors and a water brush and a paper towel in a bag to a very remote shoreline. I had cut watercolor paper to postcard size and mailed them to some special friends. Your painting is much, much better than mine, but I so remember the joy of creating. Wish I was in Maine, as I would gladly paint with you. Thanks for sharing your talents.

  18. Lindsey, I have this kit and am a beginner. In trying to understand color theory and I want to use a mix of paint rather than straight from the pans for better harmony. All manufacturers seem to have different names for their various paints and I am struggling to see what the three primary colors would be in this kit and if the kit contains the secondary and tertiary colors already mixed. Could you take a look at your kit and give me an idea of what the names of the cool and warm primaries are for this manufacturer? Love your videos, watch them all and have learned so much! Blessings!
