Hi friends! We have all seen those Pinterest-perfect art and craft spaces and while they are beautiful they are simply not realistic for most of us. In today’s video, I will offer tips on making an art space in your basement but you can adapt some of these ideas for other areas you have around your home. The space is functional and fit for purpose (even if not fit for Pinterest) and has served me well for more than a decade.
Please share the ideas you have for a home art space in the comments below. It will help others that may or may not have a basement. No space it too small or too unusual to be a functional art space. Go claim some space for art today! Happy crafting!
I live in California and we don’t have basements. I have art supplies stashed in closets, behind chairs, under beds, in a magazine rack and various container boxes😱 I put a plastic cloth over my dining room table and that is my large work space. It is very rarely used for dining so I don’t have to clean it up until I’m done with a project. My goal is to empty my buffet of unused dishes and miscellaneous glass ware. That will become my art storage area: watercolors, pastels, paper, drawing supplies, miscellaneous craft supplies. I’m so excited. It may not hold everything but at least my most used supplies will have a home.

I had never thought about using the buffet or a china cabinet.

No basements in FL and I must admit that I’m jealous of those that have one. Lol. I had supplies stashed everywhere and I would waste my art time trying to find what I was looking for. I bought a closet with tables from Create Room. It’s been great having most stuff in it. I’m overflowing a bit but it’s stuff that I don’t use much and will probably get rid of anyway. It was pricey but I used life insurance money from my mom. She painted for over 40 years and always encouraged me. Makes me feel like she still is.

We have a small yard but my husband and son put up an enclosed solarium (18X15) for all of my art supplies and a nice size area to work in. It cleared off our lanai in our house so we can actually use the lanai. We put up white sheets on the inside roof to keep the sun/heat from penetrating as we live in Hawaii. With the rotating fans it is never too hot with the windows and doors open (they put in electricity). There is also a sink just a few steps away as we have this “spa” place for our dogs for bathing and grooming outside that is covered by the overhang on our roof. My best storage places are “Husky” tool storage metal chests as I used a lot of plastic rolling carts before but with the sun and humidity, the plastic cracks. It is a wonderful blessing!

Sounds lovely. Working outside or close to outside is the best!

I really enjoyed the video on the room of hoard! My art space is in transition at the moment, having recently moved. I’m so excited at the prospect of setting everything up again, including the new acquisitions of extra markers, pastels and storage solutions! Your video gave me some new ideas! I’ll be on the third floor, not in the basement. However, I recently saw another You Tube channel where they used the cross beams in the basement to line up washi tapes and alcohol inks! Free storage space!

Good video, great information. My question is about finished artwork, especially watercolor paintings. How and where do you store these, especially the ones not framed and matted? Mine are just stacking up on a shelf – it’s not a solution.

I have a binder called an Artfolio. I can slide my watercolors into the page protector. It’s great.

How big is your binder?

Liz, are the pages big enough for Arches 10×14 paper?

I needed the One on making space just for me and my happy place in my craft room. Last spring I took a lot of things out of my craft room and sat it in the living room, and it is still there . I was stumped .I still had supplys in the room but couldnt figure how to rearrange it all to fit so i could use it all as needed.

I really enjoyed watching this video of your made craft space. I have a basement craft area set up and, like yours, it’s not pretty but its functional. My biggest problem is that I have two spaces on two floors. The basement one is where my supplies are, but my embroidery machines are on the top floor in my sewing studio. All my fabric is in the basement, and I have a cutting table down there as well. I am in my early 70’s and it is getting more difficult to go up and down two flight of stairs several times throughout the day. I’ve started to declutter and organize my sewing and craft supplies so I hope I can develop a more functional space on both levels. Thanks for sharing your space with us and giving us some inspiration to create our own spaces better.
