Let’s Paint a Beautiful Coastal Maine Landscape LIVE at 12:30pm ET

Hi friends! Today we are going to paint this beautiful photo that my friend Kelly Brooks Bay (author of Sea Glass and the Lighthouse and The Rainbow Pants) took in Kennebunkport Maine the other day.

Kelly, in addition to being a talented writer and photographer, is also our local librarian now and I though this would also make a nice project for the free monthly painting class I do there. I have been on a bit of a hiatus at the library but I am excited to get back there and paint! At the library I teach with Cotman watercolors on Strathmore and Canson watercolor greeting cards. We use the 12 color Cotman pocket box (which is only $13 right now) because it has the necessary colors to mix most other colors. I will be using the large painting I make today as the demonstration piece for my library class. I hear a lot of people poo-poo student grade paints but if it wasn’t for affordable supplies we wouldn’t be able to have this program at the library. I like Cotman paints, they’re reliable and you will see in today’s live stream that you don’t have to spend a fortune to create a beautiful painting. It’s the magician not the wand that makes the magic!

You can watch the live broadcast or replay in the player below but if you want to chat live you will need to watch from the YouTube watch page at 12:30pm Eastern Time.

Supplies: (Affiliate links used)

  • Watercolors (Cotman) I am using the full pan studio set because it is easier to get a big brush in there but all the colors needed are in the $13 pocket box
  • Paper: Canson Montville I am painting 12″x16″ but the 9″x12″ block is $15 vs $25 for the former, you can see available sizes from that link.
  • Brushes: You want absorbent brushes like Creative Mark Mimik, Princeton Neptune, or Royal & Langnickel ZEN or MENTA which can be found in your big box art and craft stores for about $5 each.
  • Also, pencil, white eraser, 2 buckets of water, paper towels, cut up bit of credit card aka credit card scraper
