You can use any colored pencils you have for this but regular colored pencils will work much better than watercolor pencils because regular (wax) colored pencils are more opaque and will blend better in a dry fashion. I like to use colored pencils on colored paper because they show up well. Some people asked me about blending with solvents but I only do that on white paper because it makes my pencils more transparent.

Assorted pattered paper
Colored pencils (Spectrum Noir Colourblend)

I am planning on a colored pencil drawing tutorial using these Colourblend pencils. I want to try them on several kinds of paper before I do a proper review of them but so far I like them! Very pretty project, I have some Derwent coloursoft pencils that I have not used enough, maybe I should get them out and try them on darker paper. I do like that those ones don’t require a lot of effort to lay down so they don’t hurt your hand so much.

Thank you for such a well explained lesson and the viual instruction. The result is lovely. I had been avoiding my pencils but feel confident enough now to get them out and put them to use. I have a lovely stash of recycled kraft card that l can put to good use. I have learnt so much from watching your videos. Thank you for this! I also really loved your watercolor feather tutorial – maybe when you do the Colourblend drawing, it could be a different feather? I’d like to see how that would look… Not necessarily a realistic feather – perhaps something colorful and fun. Or – a butterfly would be pretty!

I have not tried colored pencils on kraft paper, but now I just might! Got a great deal on some “coloring stamps” at Michaels, and have been having so much fun with them. (I saw them when they first came out and wondered…aren’t most stamps meant to be colored????) I might have to find a movie to “watch” tonight while I try colored pencils on kraft! I learned more about applying underlayers of color. It really makes a difference and the coloring comes alive! I plan on using that technique more often. Love this idea and like other posters hasn’t thought about colored paper. I would love to see a fall themed tutorial, eg changing leaves. Of course I love landscape stuff. Maybe an urban sketch like design with the pencils instead of stamping???

I think this was a great video on color pencil technique. I wonder if anyone out there has these newer Spectrum Noir Blendable pencils with the names of the colors as well as the number. I think I am guilty of stalking your videos. I am hooked. I started with stamp school ones and just kept watching everything. I bought a blender pen today for working with pencils and my first set of Windsor Newton watercolor paints. I love the dragonfly but the Steampunk one is amazing too. I loved this tutorial! In fact, I love all of your videos and tell my friends to watch as well. I had lots of crafting stuff, but was getting discouraged because I have never had a lesson. Your cheerful personality, your concern for our planet, your talents, have encouraged me to drag out all of my arts and craft supplies and started actually making things! It is so easy to get depressed when you are ill( I have cancer) thank you for doing what you do and God bless you for being my angel( the one that pulled me out of the depths of despair) please don’t let negative comment trolls bother you. Lindsay, all of a sudden I can’t make a post or ask a question about this project without being thrown into a page requiring me to sign up for a Google account, which I don’t want. I just wanted to know if I buy the whole 120 color set of Spectrum Noir pencils you are using, will there be duplicate colors? hi Dee, there are no color duplications in the line of pencils:) The eyelet setterand punch is a crop a dile and the eyelts are from Eyelet outlet and the package says you don’t need a setter, just a hole punch

Would love to learn how to altered stamped images (e.g., how to maybe mask or eliminate the dragonfly body and replace it with a doodle of a clock arm or gears to make it Steampunk) and then use color pencils on them.
