Thinking About Thinking Day!

Hi friends! I had a very lazy day today. It is snowing and I woke up with a very sore throat so I spent most of the day chilling out on the couch, quietly drinking tea and watching old movies. The Odd Couple and The Nutty Professor was on today! I have one of those top of the throat sore throats, the kind that is aggravated by talking (It’s a pleasant change around the house I’m sure LOL!) and I think I feel the beginning of an earache coming on…maybe I am just a hypochondriac about the earache but the sore throat is real. I read that if it is painful to drink orange juice than you have strep throat but I ate a grapefruit and I was fine. I blame not wiping down the shopping cart with an antibacterial wipe last night when I did groceries or the kids at the basketball games (It’s a germ buffet I tell you!) Speaking of kids Girl Scout Thinking Day is right around the corner. This year we have Sweden. Here are a few swap ideas. I had some comments on my YouTube channel from actual Swedes and they said that they do, in fact eat spaghetti and meatballs but the traditional dish is Swedish meatballs, gravy and mashed potatoes (we can use texture paste/caulking for mashed potatoes! Feel free to snag the spaghetti and meatballs for Italy though.) and their flag was more blue than the cardstock I had on hand. These were a few ideas to get the girls started. Oh and by request I demonstrated flocking.

The girls will have to make Swedish food to serve, give a talk on Sweden, teach a Swedish craft and perform a traditional Swedish song or folk dance as well. They enjoy this event every year! If you want some other ideas here are some of the other countries we have done:

And England, and Egypt swaps.

I hope some girl scouts find this helpful and have an enjoyable time preparing for thinking day! Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

  1. Feel better soon! I just got back from shopping and while I usually wipe the cart, I didn’t this time. Hope I don’t pick up the creeping crud. I bet you needed the rest anyway. You are an energizer bunny! Cute Swedish crafts. Sounds like they will have fun!

  2. Lindsay, can’t blame last night’s shopping cart. The common cold takes an average 5 days to incubate and then cause all your discomfort. Think back a few days and you may have your cause. My major annoyance is the person who insists “it’s just allergies; I’m not sick” as they share their germs! LOL. Feel better, soon.

  3. Lindsay have you ever had sinus problems? Could be your sore throat and earache. I have that a lot just a thing about living in Tennessee. Hope you get better. I have all weeks tutorials to watch because I have been at my little sisters in Las Vegas she has been very sick and had surgery, and no wi-fi. She is better now.

  4. Sounds like you might have Strep. That is what has been going around here.

Feel better soon. Sometimes we need a day to just chill like you did.

  5. There are some wicked viruses out there. I am in my 10th day of recovering from one such thing. Finally feeling better. Hope your family doesn’t get it too. Great to know you are involved with the scouts. Some of my fondest memories are from when I was a Brownie. Right now, I am watching your organizing videos, trying to find room for everything after having to majorly downsize. Feel better and thank you for sharing your gifts with the scouts.

  6. Just wanted to drop you a comment to say I hope you start to feel better soon. I certainly understand how yucky it is to be sick, and you bring such sunshine to everyone’s days, so I wish you a speedy recovery. Try to rest and just take care of YOU (like you did today) and don’t feel guilty about it, we all need some down time occasionally. Sending lots of hugs and prayers your way.

  7. I do hope you’re feeling better soon, the temperature in Sydney Australia at the moment is 35c which is about 95f (I think) and its now 3pm and we are on the coast so it’s cooler here.

  8. I find that my colds actually start about 3 days AFTER I’ve gotten sick. Where were you three days before today? In the craft area, freezing for a day or three??? No matter. Please take good care of yourself and feel better soon. You do such a nice job with your blog, and I love the “three ninja” videos. Keep up the good work.

  9. Hi Lindsay, I hope you will be better soon!
I know a old cure from The Netherlands, it taste not nice but it helps really good and fast! Boil some water, fill half a cup, add 1 or 2 teaspoons salt and stir. Add some cold water and gargle a couple of times (try 4 or 5 times). It is not pleasant but it disinfect your throat very good. Don’t swallow the salt water and after gargling flush with regular water. Doing this every 4 hours or so it will be gone after 2 or 3 times gargling. Best wishes….

  12. Your red and white hearts are typical of what goes on a Danish Christmas tree. The Scandinavians would also hang strings of their country’s flags on the tree. The Swedish licorice is called Lakerol. You can Google it and get it online. Very STRONG! (Both of my parents were Danish.) My Onkel Richard would send boxes of these to us here in America.

  13. My Aunt’s mother-in-law came over to the States from Sweden and made wonderful Swedish Meatballs. If you’d like the recipe for your girls to make, here it is:

    Berg Recipe Swedish Meatballs

1 1/2 lbs round steak (you can use ground beef) – ground
1/2 lb pork steak (you can use ground pork not sausage) – ground
    Onion – grated to taste
    Salt and pepper to taste
    1/4 tsp ginger
    2 eggs
About 8 slices dried bread (you can even use fresh)
1 1/2 c milk (canned) – that equals 1 full can of evaporated milk

Tear the bread and place in a large bowl. Add the milk and wait for it to soak in as best it can. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix well. If it looks hard (dry) – add water. Shape into balls (anywhere from walnut-size for appetizers to larger for main course. Fry in fat (bacon fat preferably) – I use oil and it works fine but bacon makes it taste better. Fry until balls are light brown on all sides. Put in a pan, cover almost all the way with water and bake 350 degrees about 1 hour – turning part-way through – gently – to make sure all have been under the water. Remove the meatballs and make a gravy with the juice using flour and water. (That means putting flour in a bowl, adding cold water to it, stirring until it’s a little thinner than paste and all the flour is mixed in. Repeat if not as thick as gravy. Stir constantlyl while heating the juice so it will thicken and not be lumpy.

My Aunt served it with potatoes she par-boiled, sliced into quarters (russett) and then rolled in butter and put on a cookie sheet to finish cooking and create a nice golden color. She seasoned it with a little salt and pepper.

My Great-Aunt who also married a Swede would do her potatoes the same way but after dipping in butter, she would then dip in parmesan cheese and bake until golden color. But she didn’t put gravy on hers.
