Hi Friends! Today I am going to show you how to paint vibrant Chinese lanterns in watercolor. It is really easy too! These will look nice on a card or as a larger painting. Follow along and have fun!

I think a city scape of Bethlehem would be great with a starry sky and some palm trees. Or a scene with sheep in the fields where the shepherds watching their flock would be is good too. Silhouetted wise men riding camels by the light of the stars?
While I love traditional Christmas images I also LOVE the country of Jesus birth and it’s scenery and traditions. Without Israel there would be no Christ and without Christ there would be no Christmas.
When I was a child those Asian scenes were quite foreign to me, even off putting. Once I understood what Christmas was all about I found them enticing. And in this day and time that part of the world is front and center isn’t it. I find they have a particular charm now that I am much older.

Lindsay, I saw you’ve got some courses available….if someone who has zilch natural artistic talent wanted to try watercoloring, what lesson would you suggest they start with? I can’t draw anything more than stick figures, but I think watercolor is learnable…..Thanks! –Patty

PS I am a scrapper, card maker and love doing faux watercoloring with distress inks using rubber stamps….

They are printable lessons with patterns so you don’t need to draw, I recommend any beginner lever tutorial because there are more photos and the instruction is basic:)

Christmas card watercolor ideas…cardinal on a branch with red berries, holly, pointsettia, nativity silhouette, Bethlehem in the distance with a star, Christmas tree, two or three ornaments on their hangers, just a branch of evergreen with hanging ornament, mistletoe with a red ribbon. How’s that?

I love your “sunny” disposition! Your videos are great fun and good too. I used a couple of your ideas with my nursing home residents (I am the activity director).
I do want to comment on your comments on Dyslexia. My son is Dyslexic and he basically knows his left from right, but reading is a challenge. It is more of processing of information issue. My son has some art skills. Reading and math are extremely challenging. The brain just works differently and some of the most successful people are Dyslexic.
Well anyway I do love you and your paintings. I started watercoloring in June of 2014 and watch you and another artist from Canada the most. I also make jewelry and have done tons of cards and scrapbooking etc… Like to multi-task (sound familiar)!!!

Candles would be nice! I never seem to get the halo in the dark right without hard lines or runbacks. Maybe you know a better way to let candlelight look pretty without a dark background …..

Hi Lindsey! LOVE your site…you have taught me more than any of my teachers or classes! Am trying to do handmade, watercolor cards for close friends and family this year. Here are some ideas I can’t find on the net (or anywhere else!)
1. easy cardinal
2. snow scene (how the heck do you create snow in watercolor when you can’t use white!!!)
3. A pretty Christmas tree
4. holly or mistletoe
5. something (anything) with shadows…maybe the Christmas tree? My shadows look like HUGE mistakes 😦
6. A manger scene, maybe in silouette or darks depicting the cradle and Mary and Joseph kneeling by cradle???
Any Christmas winter landscape scenes would REALLY help! I did your acorn and the poinsettia! They came out GREAT! THANK YOU!
P.S.S….Do you offer any “private” lessons on video for learning more advanced skills like shadows, reflections in water, glazing techniques, clouds…? I purchased one of your lessons of a bird, the chick-a-dee! Very cute….But “live” follow along as you paint is more helpful!

I love your videos. This looks great. I would put a verse or quote on the left margin, extending into a vine or flourish on the bottom. I would leave the top and right side white.

I looked up the Chinese Lanterns plant: The orange/red husk has a bright red fruit inside. Hope this answers your question.

The orange outside is a pod. The fruit of seed is inside. They rattle when dried outside in the breezes. I like the looks of journal writing around the edge.
How about a winter scene with a mail box, with birds or critters?

Decorated tree in the woods? Snow flakes? Evening snow scene with star (moon) reflections?
I mess up my left and right, always have. To “get it” I mime the pledge, something we did when i was in grade school right hand on left side. Don’t know why that stuck but knowing right or left with out thinking….no. My husband will say “Left, no your other left.” Ah love.

I have never heard of Chinese lanterns, but enjoyed the video. I am thinking of trying it and turning them into strawberries, using all the techniques you shared. I think I would have to round the bottom, make them more red-red instead of orangey-red, and add little seeds. Thank you for taking time to help. Every time I see a painting video waiting in my inbox I get so excited!
