Another one bites the dust…

So, I feel the need today to alert my blog readers of something that happened over the weekend. SCAL2, the die cutting software I use 95% of the time with my Cricut Machine, has been removed from the Craft Edge website and will no longer be sold. If you have SCAL2 or SCAL already you are OK, the software will continue to work just fine and you will not be tricked into updating scal and losing your ability to cut with your Cricut. Craft Edge will continue to support the software until the end of the year. However you won’t want to update any ProvoCraft Cricut software or they may block you SCAL or MTC and then you will be up the proverbial river. I’m just bummed today, I have been a passionate user of SCAL for almost 3 years, I think it stinks the ProvoCraft (the makers of Cricut) have bullied them and got their way. Boo provocaft, shame on you! I will continue to use my SCAL2 software until my Cricut wears out then I will buy a die cutter that will let me cut what I want and doesn’t go around suing everybody and there are plenty of reputable die cutting machines that will work with the new SCAL3 such as: Craftwell eCraft™, Black Cat Cougar/Lynx™, Boss Kut Gazelle™, Pazzles Inspiration™, Silhouette SD™, USCutter™. And unlike Provocraft software SCAL is available for Windows and Macintosh.

I will no longer purchase products from bullies and I know other crafters feel the same way. Provocraft/Cricut thinks that this move will give them back a monopoly so they can charge $90 a cartridge…think again.  BTW there is a new software I tried called FairyCut and although I prefer scal for straight die cutting the print & Cut feature in fairy cut is freakin’ unbelievable! It’s like having the Cricut Imagine machine except you can print and cut ANYTHING you want not just the lame graphics available on the overpriced cartridge…oh wait, that was just mean…shame on me 😛 Of course it is only a matter of time before they get sued too so you might want to grab this software while you can 😉 Alrightie, I am official done with my ranting and raving…speaking of fairies (nice segway huh?) here is a card I made with the new Flower Fairy stamps from Crafters Companion:

Stamps: Fairy/daisy (Crafters Companion), Words/other flower (SU!), Frugal Tip: Make an envelope first and use the scrap of paper leftover on the card.

It was a thank you for the Daisy Girl Scout leader, hence the daisy fairy. To see how I colored this image you can watch the video here. This was the image I colored in the video. To add the daisies I simply covered the fairy with a sticky note and stamped the daisy stamp right on top after the image was colored, then I stamped just the ends if the stems again to make the flowers look bigger and as if they were behind the fairy. I colored them with my promarkers.

This card qualifies for the following challenges: By the Cute & Girly, Sundays with Crissy, Tiffany Doodles, Come and Get It Challenges, One Stitch At A Time, ECP Challenges, Creative Card Crew

Thanks for listening to me rant today. I just wanted to make sure that if you have a cricut and d not already have SCAL that you don’t run out and get SCAL3 because it will not work with a cricut. (If you have another brand of diecutter I still wholeheartedly recommend it tho!)I am so fortunate that I got mine when I did! Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

  1. I totally agree with you about ProvoCraft. I was worried that this might happen. I’m going to try to sell mine at a garage sale so that I can continue to use SCAL and purchase a new cutter. Too bad, I liked my Circut. I hope PC realizes that this move will actually cost them money; I certainly won’t be buying any more cartridges or upgrading my machine. I know others feel the same way. For now I have scal and use it with along with the 20+ cartridges that I have. I also have a huge collection of fonts and clips from Lettering Delights so with SCAL and a new cutter I’m sure I’ll survive. Thank you for keeping us updated and if you have reviews of other cutters and new ones that are developed please continue to update us. Thank you.

  2. I totally agree with you. I’ll use my cricut until it bites the dust and then I’m on to another cutter. Provocraft is the loser here — I have over 50 cartridges. Using SCAL didn’t stop me from buying carts, did it? I am tired of PC’s lousy customer support, the way they launch products full of bugs, how grossly overpriced the carts are .. I could go on and on.

    1. thanks Sue! I hear that is a good brand! I know the fabulous Penny Duncan uses a Black Cat Lynx and is very happy with it and her artwork is stunning made with it! I’ll keep that in mind, thank you:)

  4. I hear ya loud and clear! In fact I won’t be buying anything Provo Craft makes because of this including the Cuttlebug folders. I am planning to replace my Wizard but not with a Cuttlebug for sure, I will give Sizzix my business and when my cricut breaks I will buy a lynx, they don’t monopolize the cutter market.

    1. Hi Diane, I have a big shot die cutter by Ellison and it is super rugged, I love it! The cuttlebug felt too flimsy (aka cheaply made) for me…not surprising I guess:)

  5. I was wondering how long it was going to take for them to get to scal and I know they are looking at fairycuts too just a matter of time…I’m also looking into another cutter this is such a bummer b/c the cricut was made by another cutter company..they were NOT the orginal designers of the cricut!! it was made for them..
here is another bummer.my mtc and ds was on my laptop and I DROPPED my laptop off my kitchen table while I was watching a movie, fell down to stone tile!!!!

    1. I know, Pazzels made cricut and the funny thing is pazzels cutters will work with MTC and SCAL…Pazzels also came out with the craftroom software before cricut!

  6. There is a group on Facebook called Boycott Provocraft. They are pretty passionate about the lawsuits that PC has against MTC and, apparently, now SCAL. I joined just out of curiosity but have found myself in full boycott mode since following their posts. Way to be the bully PC. You lost my business!

    1. Oh, I too joined! I look at it this way, look at all the money I will save not buying carts, cuttlebug embossing folders and accessories. I wash and restick my mats to make them last longer and I can buy Roland blades instead of cricut…no one is going to tell me how to use my machine!

  7. I had owned my SCAL2 software less than a year. I haven’t used it very much, but I really enjoyed coming up with my own design projects. It’s much easier to use than the Design Studio software for the Cricut. I received a very informative e-mail over the weekend from the company that I purchased my SCAL2 software from advising me of what was going on and how to continue using my SCAL2. When I had problems using my Cricut–I didn’t get any help from Provocraft–I went to other user’s sites on the web! I think Provocraft is being very short-sighted. Crafters are not sheep that follow the herd blindly. I’m going to check out the Boycott Provocraft group. Thanks for the information and I enjoyed your rant! 🙂

  8. I haven’t had a Cricut before, and I don’t use SCAL, but I did get a Silhouette SD a few months ago and love it! I have been doing SO much more with paper ever since then. The software isn’t hard to use, but since you know your SCAL software, I’m sure you can look into compatibility. Nonetheless, when you’re ready for a new cutter, just passing along my experience.

Thank you soooo much for the tips your previously posted about washing your cutting mats and sharpening your blades! I am in your debt for that!

I also will not buy anything else from this company shame on them.(Husband is in the military we are stationed oversea at the moment) Do not have a lot of choices as to where or what I can buy at the moment. also in saying this Provo Craft/Cricut does not have cartridges for the military that I would even want to use over and over again.no thank you but looks like i’ll have to start saving up for a Black Cat Cougar maybe.Have to know more about this one so if anyone can please give me some feedback on another cutter i would welcome any and all thank you

    1. Hi Walsh,
If your programs work now they will continur=te to for for you however for anyone buying the scal or mtc it will not work with a cricut. If you bought them before they were sued you are OK and can keep cutting until your cricut bites the dust;)

I have hear greast things about black cat (see pennyduncancreations.blogspot.com for tutorials) and also the silhouette sd machine, it is cheaper (onsale for $180 at overstock.com) and you can cut with scal3 or MTC or Funtime with that, infave tou can even cut directly from the free program inkscape with that. I will probably go with a silhoutte when my cricut bites the dust;)
