Have a seat!

Hello friends! After filming my Mardens haul video yesterday I had a bit of a panic because I had two fabric projects looming in my future so I thought “Hey, I’ll replace the cover on my butterfly chair now because that will be a quick and easy project.” You can probably guess where this is going huh? You’ve probably even uttered those words at the start of a project. But it never goes as quickly or easily as expected. How hard can it be, it is basically a pillow case with flaps on the back to hook it to the chair. Or so I thought.  I decided in preparation for my jacket lining project I would use a seam ripper to take the cover apart and remove the cushion inside than trace the old fabric on to the new fabric. Well, there were more pieces to that sucker than I imagined, the seams would not come apart and I ended up just tearing the rip in the back (that is why I am recovering it BTW) to remove not one rectangle cushion but two asymmetrical cushions and I immediately forgot what way they went in as soon as they came out! Crapola, I have no clue how to even begin this project and I am beginning to doubt the 3 yards of fabric will be sufficient to finish it (I was too cheap to shell out the extra $3.99 for another yard.) I took a deep breath and pondered my lot. I grabbed some paper, a measuring tape and figured out a way to make the cover from scratch with re-enforced pockets to hold the cushion on the frame. I laid the old cover on my material a couple of times to make sure I could fit my pieces before I cut and I sewed that sucker good! What do you think?

This is my favorite spot to crochet. I like to sit criss-cross applesauce in this chair and crochet while watching TV. I’m happy to report that it works just fine! The kids have been in it a lot today but they have been warned not to jump on it for I will tolerate no shenanigans that cause another rip in the back. I am not sewing another one! I think that I will keep my eyes peeled (at Mardens of course) for a 40″ zipper so I can undo the top seam and insert a zipper so the cover and be washed but that can be done anytime. I am happy with it. My husband thinks the fabric looks like lawn furniture. Well, it wouldn’t be the first time we had lawn furniture in the living room! 😀 I see what he means though. So, what are you making this weekend? I hope it goes as smooth as you hoped for. Til next time happy crafting!

  1. You are after my own heart….sounds like what I might do…LOL. My weekend saw me complete two knitted frilly scarves, #18 &19. I am getting ready to start #20 while watching ( listening) to two favorite TV programs. I make these scarves to give to my friends and recently in hospital so four nurses will get one. Did you ever do the frillies with Yorganza? I have 12 to do. Love this better than Sashay yarn but yarn was discontinued.

I am making paper beads! It’s my new obsession…thanks to you! My girls got Rainbow Looms and the Recycled Paper Bead Maker.
That particular tool is a bit too challenging to use so I ordered different paper bead tools and I have found the one that I love (actuall there are two…My girls are not a thrilled w/ the paper beads as I am but they LOVE the Rainbow loom!

  5. Now that you know how to do it you can always look for fabric your hubby might like better, but remind him of how much money you saved when he sees the fabric costs over $20 a yard. He might like your “out door chair” just fine.
I think it looks great and you got it done really fast. Good job.

  6. I always tell my husband in reference to picking out fabrics, colors, and furniture that he doesn’t get a vote! LOL! Just kidding of course… 🙂

  7. Hi Lindsay, the cover looks fine, and a bit of the outdoors (lawn furniture ) inside in winter must be cheery!! I am going to sew three water jug covers that are on the bench permanently. I want to make them so they don’t look too much like shrouds, plus in a green colour to go with my kitchen accessory colour (pick a green, any green..!) and including a black lining. I have some gorgeous green patchwork cottons (have been collecting greens to make a green quilt). I think I will make a kind of drawstring bag which closes by pulling two cords at the top. Easy to wash once I make them….

  9. I agree…this chair should be just yours – at least for the first month!!!! A comfortable chair is hard to come by!!!! I have taken over my husband’s chair since my knee surgery so I can easily put my leg up, as well as get out of the chair…it is an electric recliner. Have mine ordered, but delivery is at least another month because of the bad weather. Hubby is using my swivel rocker recliner…which dumped me on the floor when I tried to get out – getting in was no picnic either – LOL! He drilled a hole and put in a peg so he could stop the excessive swivel, and two pieces of wood in the front so he would not be dumped…works pretty well now, but I’m holding on to his chair until mine arrives!!!
This weekend I have 4 iris fold kimono cards to make…FUN!
You certainly are fast in accomplishing a finished project!

  11. You did it! I would have gotten frustrated and thrown an afghan over the whole thing. 🙂 I am working on coloring images for greeting cards this weekend and doing some much overdue gardening (because I want to see flowers when I look out from my crafting spot-selfish I know…..) Have a wonderful rest of your weekend.

  13. Hi from UK – last week I thought I would recover my table top ironing board (kept exclusively for my sewing work) – won’t take a mo thought I. I did learn how to attach bias tape on both sides at once using my machine so that was a bonus. Everything was going swimmingly until I pulled the cords to make a knot – I pulled the fabric sideways thinking I would get a really good fit round the edges and, yes, I tore it just where the two cord ends meet. Not to worry, only I know it is there. How long will it be before the knowing really gets to me and I have to start over on a new one? Love your videos – Regards – LIZ

  14. Well done Lindsay 5*’s for perseverance, it looks really comfy. (What exactly is criss cross applesauce? Not a saying I’ve heard in the UK)

    1. cross legged like a child might sit on the floor, AKA “Indian style” but that might not be OK to say anymore as I have not heard it in years:)

  15. I have many times started an “easy” project that turned into a pain in the butt! I love that fabric and, gosh, you’ve done a wonderful job. Here’s a pat on the back for you!

  16. Good job on the chair! You deserve a lot of credit for attempting it. There is always a learning curve.

I daresay it’s the floral print paired with the shape of the chair that makes Hubby think it looks like lawn furniture. That print on a club chair would come across differently. If you ever redo the chair maybe fabric with a graphic print or that batik style or even polka dots, plaid, etc. would get him thinking differently.

At any rate, the chair looks good, function is not affected and it’s no longer ripped. Way to go!!

  17. I think it is a happy chair, and that is my favorite flower to paint and doodle. Gads, you are ambitious. I covered a chair (really upholstered) with a friend who had that talent. I’m not sure I would go there by myself, though. It turned out great! =)

  18. LOL!!! Sounds like something I would do…forgetting how to put the article back together….but it looks great!!! a little tip I learned from my dear father-in-law – he used to label each piece – simpler way take pictures as you are undoing it – easy reference – I did that with a desk we bought at a furniture store – went back and took pictures of the drawers that were literally impossible to put together!! I’m off to work on an afghan for my son….it’s been 2 yrs and was supposed to be a Christmas present….Christmas 2012! He’s patient!!! LOL!!

  20. Turned out great! Looks like you chose that particular fabric because it goes with the wall color and your blooming bright personality. Thanks for sharing the finished project and LOVE your “criss cross applesauce” terminology. I am not so sure that I could do that anymore…
