Sketchbook Sunday: Geraniums

Hi friends! Today for Sketchbook Sunday I am painting geraniums! These hardy plants do well in Maine, I got a potted geranium from my sister last week from mothers day (that’s the one we will paint) and a hanging basket from hubby and the kids. The hanging basket is currently on the porch but I am waiting to plant the potted one until the weather warms ups a bit.  I did feel bad for the hanging basket one night and brought it in but so far so good. I hope it can deal well with the cold and lack of sunlight. Tomorrow is supposed to be 70 but thunderstorms, hail, and windy rain. I might have to bring him in again and save him from the shock!

As always my sketchbook Sunday paintings are in time lapse but I do have a real-time lesson for this painting in Critique Club.

Playing With Pencils! Sketch Along With Me!

Hi friends! I am feeling a bit under the weather today, I have a sore throat. I had two kids home sick today and the school secretary said that middle-schoolers were dropping like flies (and I chaperoned a class trip with the entire middle school Friday!) I thought while my voice held out and since it was the first day of Spring (paying no attention to the foot of snow on my lawn) that I would paint a springy picture!

This was one f of the reference pictures I asked you to vote on last week and so many of you liked it so how could I refuse!

Watch the video and sketch along! I am using watercolor pencils but you can use what you have, if graphite blend with your fingers and if wax pencil you can blend with paint thinner or leave it unblended. It is daily practice that will make you better, not a certain kind of materials:)

I am using Aquablend Pencils from Spectrum Noir. They come in sets of 24 (4 sets total-primaries, naturals, florals, essentials) with no duplicate colors between sets. Because things sell out quickly I found a few shops that have them in stock at an affordable price. *If you want all 4 sets the best price is at Hallmark Scrapbook when you buy the collection.

Watercolor Bookmarks!

Hi Friends! Small projects are a great way to try out new techniques. I used a combination of stamping, drawing and water-coloring to make these 3 bookmarks:

DCF 1.0

I used a few Caran D’ache watercolor pencils I recently purchased at MerriArtist, I ordered these and some other goodies last Saturday and got them on Tuesday! Fast service, great prices and wonderful customer service. I am not affiliated with them but they did give me a coupon code to share: 10off for $10 off an order of $100 or more and free shipping. Today I am reviewing the Caran D’ache Supracolor pencils, Caran d’ache water brush (a gift from MerriArtist) and Aquabee 90lb watercolor paper (a real bargain!) Have a look at the video for the tutorial and review.

Video!

After the picture was dry I cut it into 3 panels. I inked the edges and added some stamping with black ink. The edge swirls are by Autumn Leaves, the corner flourish is by Inkadinkado and the Chinese calligraphy is retired from PSX. When I was happy with the look I ran it through my laminating machine (I got my laminator from LTD commodities for $17 and the refill pouches come in a 100 variety pack for $5, another steal of a deal and it has worked well for me for a couple of years, unfortunately I could not find a link to this online.) You can also use contact paper or packing tape to laminate them even cheaper! The lamination really enhances the color and will protect the bookmarks (and your books) from color migration. I also wanted to mention the there is another watercolor pencil by Caran d’ache called “museum” which are more light-fast and expensive that are probably better in quality. I did not know about them when I ordered these or I would have bought a few to compare. I do not know how light-fast these are but the laminating will help prevent fading.

I think I see more bookmarks in my future! Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

Let’s Paint a Flower with New Prima Watercolor Pencils!

Hi Friends! I just got 4 of the new Prima watercolor pencil sets this week as well as water brushes from Hallmark Scrapbook. This is what I made:

primathumb1

I thought it would be fun to turn on the camera as I used them for the first time so you could learn along with me. I will show you how to draw and paint this flower. Here is that video!

As I mentioned there is some overlap in the colors. I have four sets and I asked viewers what color numbers were in the other sets so I could make this a handy color chart for you. Here is a list of the colors in each set:

Earth Tones: 03, 88, 86, 89, 94, 107, 109, 111, 114, 117, 119, 120
Soft Neutrals: 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09, 87, 88, 113
Spring and Fall: 01, 03, 08, 21, 26, 30, 34, 52, 58, 90, 97, 119
The Basics: 01, 16, 22, 25, 32, 44, 47, 64, 71, 80, 91, 120

The following sets I do not have.
Scenic Route: 05, 07, 09, 113, 88, 84, 61, 50, 54, 62, 58, 120
Julie Nutting Skin Tones: 101 102 90 89 86 09 05 16 08 91 95 120

primapencils_colorchart

I think it might help you to decide what sets you want to get. I was planning on buying the skin tone set when it came out to use with my other colored pencils I already had (most colored pencil sets are lacking in complex light skin tones) but Hallmark Scrapbook offered to send me these to try before I got the chance and the skin tones were out of stock! I really think I could come up with about any skin color with the soft neutrals and Earth tone sets though. I also do not have the scenic route set which contains more blues and greens for landscape art. Here are the colors swatched out and blended for the sets I have:)

swatchesI hope you find this helpful. The pencils retail for $12.99 and Hallmark Scrapbook has them for $10.99 and if you don’t see all the sets on the website it means they sold out but they get stuff back in pretty quickly (case in point, the Spectrum Aqua markers.) I really liked the quality of the pencils. I have tried almost all of the watercolor pencils out there and these are really comparable to a Derwent watercolor pencil in my opinion at half the price retail. I put the color chart together so you can spend your money on sets with colors you like and avoid too many duplicates. I’m going to put mine together in a jar so I can see them together and so they will take up less space on my desk. Maybe I will put a piece of washi tape on the pencil to indicate what set they are from so I can tell at a glance. I’ll let you know in a future tutorial:) Let me know if you have any questions. Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

Let’s Paint a Peony in Watercolor Pencils!

Hello friends! Tonight I have a fun watercolor pencil tutorial for you. You can use any brand you like but I am using a few of my new Albrecht Durer watercolor pencils from Faber Castell. They preform very much like the Inktense pencils by Derwent but really you can use whatever brand you like! Follow along with the video and have fun!

So when you see a complex picture break it down to lines and marks and have fun with it. If it doesn’t turn out, just toss it or flip it over and paint on the back. You can find the reference photo by Lilian Bell at Paint My Photo. That’s it for me tonight! Thanks for visiting and til next time happy crafting!
