Hi friends! I had a great couple of days off last week but I missed you during the live show so I am so excited to paint with you today! Earlier this week I was trying to paint an english rose with very packed petals. I was working in a small sketchbook with a waterbrush and a pocket set of watercolors.

I enjoyed the challenge of my quick sketch above but realized that to do the flower justice I needed a plan. I wanted to paint it larger on good paper using better brushes and paint and that is what we will do today!

If you have ever struggled to keep up with any of my YouTube tutorials or felt that you might be missing some of the foundations of watercolor then Essential Tools and Techniques for Watercolor is for you. I designed this course to teach the basics of watercolor and reinforce good habits when painting.  I had so many YouTube viewers ask me to make a class that would get people up to speed with watercolor quickly and have all of that needed information in one place for easy reference. In my course you get over 5 hours of step-by-step instruction covering a wide variety of topics from color mixing, texture effects, washes and more.  Upon completion of the class you will have filled your watercolor toolbox with techniques and competed 3 beautiful painting using the skills that you learned. Join the nearly 700 students who have enrolled in this class already! Here are some recent student comments:

Hey Lindsay, I had so much fun with this tutorial and learnt so many techniques – thank you! -Marianna Panopoulos

This is a great overview on color. I really appreciate the way you explained it. I never knew the difference between warm colors and cool colors and how they work together (or not) when you mix them to create new colors. Thanks for the encouragement on playing with colors. It’s so much fun. -Stephanie Youngerman

Love this lesson. Very detailed skills tips and skills provided. -Eloise Luyk

Yay!!! While there are lots of things I would work to improve, I NEVER thought I could do this before now! Thank you, Lindsay! -Diane Giarrusso

Below are the paintings you will complete in class:

You will also practise washes and do color mixing studies that you can keep and refer to later. You also have lifetime access to the class so you can return whenever you want a refresher. Feel free to share your work in the classroom and you can even share photos of painting in progress if you want feedback, or get stuck, right under the lesson it pertains too. I am so excited this feature exists because it is helpful to all students and not just the ones asking a questions. Learning together and from one another is so much fun!

Supplies (Amazon Affiliate Links Used)

  • Mission Gold Watercolors: I am using the Perfect Pan set of 24 because the palette is compact and fits on-screen, but this set of 36 is a better deal *BTW I just ordered this set and will review it soon! I also have and recommend the 24 pure pigment set before, I think it is the best value because you have all single pigment tubes (larger tubes than in the 36 set) and you can mix all of the colors in the 36 set from this set I believe. It is more expensive because you are getting more paint and it is a bit heavy on the red/pinks so it is better for flower/still life painters as opposed to landscape artists. You really can’t go wrong with any Mission Gold paints but a little goes a long way so just pick the set that meets your needs (you don’t need them all LOL!)
  • 140# Arches Watercolor paper CP I am working 9″x12″ size and I tear my paper down from large sheets. I just saw this pack of 10 22″x30″ sheets on Amazon for $27.99 and I have never seen this paper at low! *I buy full sheet watercolor paper, tear down a couple of sheets at a time and store the paper in the shipping box under my bed FYI:)
  • Brushes: For beginners I recommend Royal Majestic, this 5 peice set is a good assortment and cover most anything you want to paint. The bristles have more snap and hold less water which makes working with student grade paints easier as well, they are an excellent value! If you are more advanced I recommend the Mimik Synthetic Squirrel Watercolor Brushes as they hold a TON of water and paint and are a great deal!
  • White gel pen (Uniball Signo)

Acrylic Painting Tutorial: Vase of Brushes

Hi friends! Today I have a project that can be done in acrylics, oils or gouache.

14324467_10207237656805153_1181979369630035626_o

I think I might want to do this one in watercolor too, well the pot anyway, maybe with a cup of tea and a pastry! Let me know what you think about that in the comments but for now here is the video tutorial!

Video!

This was the first time I tried Aqyla paint. I have a viewer request a review of it and I will have one for you this weekend. I needed to try a few techniques and experiments with it before I gave my final opinion. The set of 18 colors they sent me sells for $46 and every tube contains the pigment number. It acts like an acrylic but is easier to blend. Technically it is an alkyd resin. You can find out more about Aqyla here. They also gave me a coupon code for my viewers to save 10%: thefrugalcrafter This is not a sponsored post but they did send me the paint for free for review purposes.

I am working on an 11″x14 canvas, my sketch was done in a watercolor pencil:) I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and you give it a try yourself! BTW there will be a live show tomorrow at 12:30pm ET, hope to see you there! Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

LIVE Painting Class Today! 12:30pm ET {Betta Fish}

Howdy friends!  It’s been a crazy week, the kids are on break so there have been sleepovers, softball practice and lazing around. The weather was so nice yesterday that my son and I took the kayaks out! We also had the water well pump bite the dust after 40 years of faithful service so I had a repair man in yesterday to replace the pump, boy, running water is something you take for granted until you don’t have it and then it is the most important thing! I am feeling so thankful:) This is what we will be painting today at 12:30pm Eastern Time(I must have water on the brain LOL!)
