Colorful & Quirky Fall Leaves in Watercolor (with BRUSHO accents!)

Hi friends! Today we will have a fun and easy loose style watercolor project for our livestream:

39442859_10212341943889140_4526275126253060096_o.jpg

This started out as a loose watercolor but they I wondered what would happen if I added Brusho (a powdered watercolor) and so I did. Immediately regretted it but then decided to leave it be and come back later and I found that I quite liked the effect. You can do it or not, it’s up to you! I think adding pen helped sharpen up some of the leaves giving me the effect I was after in the first place. You can watch the live stream or reply in the player below but if you want to chat live be sure to watch at 12:30pm Eastern time today on YouTube.

Watercolor Flower Workshop: This is my most recent class and it is all about loosely painting expressive flowers in watercolor. Have you ever tried to paint loose and ended up with a hot mess? Well, this class will offer the structure you need so you can create a floral scene from your imagination that is well-balanced, beautifully composed and loose! This class focuses heavily on brush control so it’s good for folks that need help with brush strokes and are curious about some of the odd specialty brushes that are out there. I soon will be adding a wedge brush section to this class! In addition to the all new step by step real-time instruction provided in the course there is also an alphabetized archive of other watercolor flower tutorials for your convenience. Learn more here.

In addition to the never before seen content in these classes you have access to my support in the online classroom. Under every lesson there is an area for you to post photos of your artwork and ask me questions. I love giving feedback and seeing your beautiful artwork! Here is what some of my students have said:

Thanks so much! Love this class I do each section so many times because it is fun and i keep learning! Thanks again! -Karen L Jackson on Watercolor Flower Workshop

I LOVE THIS COURSE! Actually can paint a flower without a drawing! -Joanna Stratten on Watercolor Flower Workshop

Hi Lindsay, what a great drawing course. I have been painting for 30 plus years, drawing was my weakest, until now. I’m starting to see things in shape, I think the most helpful is starting with a circle or shape then fill in with the shapes of whatever you are drawing. This has been the best money I have ever spent. What I love I can look at these lessons over & over until I get it!! -Linda on Learn to Draw with Lindsay

I am blown away by the excellence of your lessons! Things that I have struggled with are making more sense when I sketch along with you. So glad that I will be able to go back and reference your videos! -Irene Addison on Learn to Draw with Lindsay

Thanks for the tutorial. I am glad that it is in more depth than the YouTube videos, although I love them as well. I am brand new to both painting and drawing so even the iris was a challenge. When I started watching your YouTube videos I found that I had some watercolor supplies I had purchased about 15 years ago and never had the nerve to try. Thanks for giving me the idea that it is possible for me to learn to paint! -Helanna Andres on Essential Tools and Techniques for Watercolor

How to hold the brush is the best information you could have imparted! loving all these videos; can’t wait to start painting the iris. -Judith Taylor on Essential Tools and Techniques for Watercolor

Hi Lindsay, Great Class!!! Simple and easy to follow. Thx for putting this together. I can’t wait to start the next painting! -Tina Amoroso on Texture Toolbox Feathers & Fowl

Finished the duck and this course! Loved it! Thank you so much for these watercolor painting classes. I just got the Rembrandt 48 half pans and am excited to use them….. I can actually do some watercolor painting thanks to your classes. Crystal Neuendorf on Texture Toolbox Feathers & Fowl

I love helping people discover the hidden artistic ability within them and I welcome anyone who want to paint better (and more often) to join one of my watercolor classes! Use coupon code HB42, if discount doesn’t automatically appear,  to get any class for $42 (that’s 47% off!) and start creating today! Don’t wait, today is the last day to take advantage of the Birthday deal! Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

Paint a Pineapple LIVE 12:30pm Today!

Edited to add the final painting from the live stream:) Have a great weekend and happy Easter!

29831165_10215635910912221_1736783644_o

Howdy friends! I have to admit my practise painting for today’s live stream is a hot mess. That’s OK though because I know where I went wrong, and continued to go wrong until I had the equivalent of compound interest of wrongness on my paper. It is just as valuable to know what not to do as it is to know the steps to do it right. A smooth sea never made a skilled sailor, am I right?

29355135_10211460883663185_241842951332853312_o

My painting went wrong when I decided to put in a background after painting my pineapple. It threw off all of my values (relative lightness and darkness of the subject.) I started painting with a white background in mind but then decided I wanted a colorful background so I spent the rest of the painting using mixed media techniques to try to pop the pineapple out of the background. Values are so important in any artwork. It is how we create depth and dominance in our focal areas. If you struggle differentiating tonal values my new Class Learn to Draw with Lindsay can help show you how to see your work in values and correct mistakes when they inevitably happen. We may not need the mixed media supplies in the live stream today but they are nice to have handy just in case. You can watch the live broadcast or the replay in the player below but if you want to chat live be sure to watch on the YouTube watch page at 12:30pm ET today (Friday 3/30/18.)

I love hearing how happy my students are with the results they are achieving. Here is what a few of them had to say:

Hi Lindsay, what a great drawing course. I have been painting for 30 plus years, drawing was my weakest, until now. I’m starting to see things in shape, I think the most helpful is starting with a circle or shape then fill in with the shapes of whatever you are drawing. This has been the best money I have ever spent. What I love I can look at these lessons over & over until I get it!! ~Linda

Thanks for the tips. Gee, the way you’ve arranged all of this is just wonderful, Lindsay — never a problem viewing what you’re doing, your voice is crystal clear, the lesson projects are challenging because they teach new skills yet are simple enough for beginners, plus the Q&A and comments section is so helpful. It’s obvious you’ve worked hard on this setup and it’s absolutely perfect! LOVE your classes!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you! ~Kathleen L. Mechanic

Hi Lindsay! I’ve been enjoying your tutorials on YouTube for a couple of years and I just joined this art class today! Thank you so much for offering it to us! I have spent over 50 years telling myself that I can’t make art due to my lack of talent, but you have helped me to realize that I CAN make art that I enjoy viewing! All I have to do is follow your instructions! You are so fun to watch, and your instructions are easy to follow! I love your enthusiasm! You’re the best! Thanks for all you do for those of us who are aspiring to be better artists! ~Nancy Whitmore

Hi Lindsay, Great exercise! I am happily covered in graphite from head to toe but somehow that makes me feel more like a real artist! lol 🙂 I am grateful for this lesson as I have much to learn with values. Seeing things through your eyes and hearing how you explain things helps me learn new perspectives in art 🙂 I truly appreciate all your instruction 🙂 ~ A happy pupil, Pam Karasy 🙂

I am blown away by the excellence of your lessons! Things that I have struggled with are making more sense when I sketch along with you. So glad that I will be able to go back and reference your videos! ~Irene Addison

Don’t wait! The 50% off coupon DRAWME is only good in my online school through tomorrow. You can purchase a class now (on sale) and take as long as you need to complete it as you have lifetime access, in fact I sometimes add new goodies to class and you will have access to that as well! Learn more or enroll today! I hope to see you live at 12:30pm eastern time for a fun pineapple painting, til then happy crafting!

LIVE Castle Paint-a-thon!

Edit! The live stream was so fun today! Here is the final painting. The replay is available below!

castleblog

Hi friends! This week I am in a castle collaboration with talented painters Angela Anderson and Cinnamon Cooney-The Art Sherpa! We are all painting castles! Here is a color study for the one I will be painting:

17436026_10208742546146446_4280285143992540244_o

The colors I am using are: Quin Red, Cobalt Blue, Cad. Yellow Lt., Burnt Sienna, Sap Green, Yellow Ocher but you can pick whatever you have that is closest. If you are new to watercolor you can thin down acrylic paints to a watery consistency and work on paper. You do not have to worry about under-binding on paper;) Here is the reference photo for the castle but please refer to the printable pattern because I am adding more landscape area to this.

Please don’t be “crabby” with me…

Hi friends! What a week! Between snow storms (and snow days) it was hard to get my bearings but I was so happy it was Friday so I could do a live painting show. I was really looking forward to it since the last two Fridays I was away. I didn’t have time to blog about the live broadcast this morning which was probably just as well because I had to restart the show due to a computer glitch.  I’ts one of those days LOL! Here is what we painted:
