Colorful & Quirky Fall Leaves in Watercolor (with BRUSHO accents!)

Hi friends! Today we will have a fun and easy loose style watercolor project for our livestream:

39442859_10212341943889140_4526275126253060096_o.jpg

This started out as a loose watercolor but they I wondered what would happen if I added Brusho (a powdered watercolor) and so I did. Immediately regretted it but then decided to leave it be and come back later and I found that I quite liked the effect. You can do it or not, it’s up to you! I think adding pen helped sharpen up some of the leaves giving me the effect I was after in the first place. You can watch the live stream or reply in the player below but if you want to chat live be sure to watch at 12:30pm Eastern time today on YouTube.

LIVE today at 12:30pm ET: Painting Hyacinth Flowers in a Mason Jar

Edited to add update on painting. I felt that the watercolor only version of the painting left something to be desired so I added Mermaid Markers (ink) acrylic paint pens, and watercolor crayons to finish off this piece and I am much happier with it.

Live Free Rose Painting Class Today! 12:30pm ET

Hi friends! I had some time yesterday to plan today’s live stream and this is what I came up with:

Lweirich_rose_with_glazes

I really enjoyed painting this one although I am not thrilled with the 3 pale leaves in the upper right corner so I think I will leave them out, we can always free-hand them in later (so if you are tracing the pattern you can leave those out.) I think it is a wonderful lesson to learn how to capture the soft, smooth, velvety texture of rose petals by building luminous glazes. It is really a kinda advanced technique but as always I will break it down so even beginners can understand and I always make my replays available so you can work at your own pace and come back later if needed:) Below if the photo we will work from.

You can watch the live stream or replay in the player below but if you want to chat live with other painters or ask me questions as we go you will need to watch at 12:30 today on youtube.

Let’s Paint Geraniums {Quickly or Slowly LOL!}

Hi friends!  If I had a dollar for every technical difficulty I have suffered with over the last week I could afford to go to another stamp show LOL! I won’t get into all of that but I was finally able to figure out a work-around to render a long HD quality video that was still small enough in size to upload on my rural internet connection which I think consists of soup cans and string. Ironically after discovering this awesome trick for my current software we had some problems with our computer and the only way to fix them was to do a factory reset and uninstall all software and I can’t find my original disk to reinstall it. Looks like I’ll be upgrading anyway. Oh well, when computers get you down paint something pretty! We are going to be painting a sunny windowsill with geraniums on it:

The reference photo I am working from is from the very talented Ruth Archer at Paint My Photo.  I wanted to share a picture of my palette so you could see the mixes. The colors I used are: Yellow Ochre, Burnt Sienna, Ultramarine Blue, Sap Green, Quin. Rose (or any pinkish red)

boxpalette

In this long tutorial we will paint the picture in real-time. Feel free to grab your paints and work along with me. I am working on an 140# cold pressed Arches block. I begin by sketching the design with Prima watercolor pencils but you can use what you have. I am using M Graham & co paints but again, any brand is fine. Scroll down for the shorter tutorial.

If you just want a sped up brief video this next one is for you, OR if you want to see if this painting is something that you might like to try, if so, then paint along with the longer version.

I hope having both is helpful to you and I am really happy my computer cooperated! Let me know what you think in the comments below! I posted the long version because so many YouTube viewers requested it (I do listen to my readers!) If you liked this video please share it on Pinterest, Facebook or Twitter, there are handy buttons at the bottom of the post to help you do this and I appreciate it so very much!  Thanks so much for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

Paint with me! Cherry Blossoms!

Hi friends! I have lost track of my weekend! No blog post yesterday so I intended to get this post up this morning so you would have time to paint with me before the weekend was over but alas time got away. Girl Scout cookies came in and we had to get them sorted and accounted for before we delivered. I had a box of caramel delights left over at the end and I just about came unglued before finding the bag it was missing from. The thought of opening every order I had bagged up to find the delinquent cookies would have put me over the edge. I am so glad it was missing from the first bag I checked. Phew, time to relax and blog. Better late then never right? Grab a waterproof black pen, watercolor and paper and let’s paint a springy picture!

I really like the way my lighting looked in this video, I was experimenting with an adjustment in my editing software (it was over 20 minutes and my camera starts a new file after 20 minutes so i had to edit those bits together anyway) and it seems to brighten the picture without washing out the colors so it is more true to life. What do you think? I also used a different setting on my camera. There is always something new to learn even after 900+ videos, there is always something new to keep it fun! I hope you enjoyed this watercolor play-date and til next time happy crafting!
