A cute, easy (and Cheap) little gift!

When I first saw the box of 24 fruit cups at Sam’s Club I knew that the little pop top cans they came in would be great for crafting. You get 24 little tins of fruit for about $8 and when you are done eating it’s time to craft!

Step I. Wash the cans (a grown-up job because the tins mat be sharp inside)

step 2. Cut strips of paper to wrap around the can. I you want to stamp it do so before gluing it to the can.

step 3. Add more decorations. You can leave it like this to have a votive holder or keep going and make a pin cushion.

step 4. Place a hand-full of batting in the center of a 6″ circle of fabric. Gather up the sides and secure with a rubber band. Squirt a large amount of hot glue (or tacky glue if working with kids) inside the tin. Press the fabric ball in the tin rubber band side down and there you have it. A lovely pincushion to keep or give as a gift! Here are some others I made:

Faux Bandanna Technique

I was perusing the latest issue of Crafts ‘n Things when I saw a cool new technique called Faux Bandanna. I guess it’s been around a while but it’s new to me and maybe you too so I thought I’d share:

The center Square uses the "faux bandanna" technique.

Here is how you do it! First stamp your design in black.

Then add highlights and doodles with a white gel pen. /you can doodle with black too.

Sorry I can’t show you the completed card I did with the right panel, it’s under consideration at a magazine. Thanks for stopping by and happy crafting!

Coffee Filter Inspiration Book

This project of mine appeared in the July 2008 issue of Scrapbook News & Review and I thought I share with you how to make it. It is filled with Inspirational quotes and there are blank tags in the pockets for quotes I wish to add later.

Coffee Filter Inspiration Book by Lindsay Weirich 2008

You will need: 1 sheet of pattern paper (I used Autumn leaves), 1 scrap card stock (for making the tags), cone style coffee filters, a binder clip, ribbon, stamps (Inque Boutique), ink (close to cocoa: Stampin Up) and alphabet stickers. I printed all of my quotes on vellum and staples them to the pages. Just remember not to staple the coffee filter shut or you will not be able to use the pockets the filter makes.

How-To: Stamp on the coffee filters. Attaches quotes or simply write them on. Fold the pattern paper in half and trace the coffee filter keeping the small end on the fold. cut out. Assemble your book and bind with the clip. Decorate the cover. Attach ribbons to the clip. Now wasn’t that easy? Here are a few more shots of the book’s pages:

A Sketch for you!

Hi there, If you like sketches try this! Here is a sketch I made for a sketch challenge at the Ready Set Create forums. Make a card or layout based on the sketch and upload it to the gallery. They will have a new sketch each week. Let’s get more pages scrapped!

Here is what I made with my sketch, I didn’t plan it but after I drew the sketch I was taking photos off my camera and saw these of Hazel with her frisbee. Perfect!

Hope you enjoy the sketch and play along, I can’t wait to see what you create!

Bind it all with your Crop-A-Dial!

I was thinking of investing in a binding system but then I saw the prices of them! Egad! I can think of other ways to spend $60…stamps, paper, paint, etc…. So I thought Why can’t I do this with my Crop-A-Dial (heck, that baby does just about everything!) I went to staples and grabbed a pack of 25 binding combs for $5 and grabbed my CAD and went to work! This is what I made:

dan99.blogspot.com
Stamps: Inque Boutique, Sunday International, Hampton Art, SCAL Templates: dan99.blogspot.com

And you can do it too! Here’s how. Gather your supplies, papers/chipboard to bind, scissors for cutting your binging comb to size, binder clips, a pencil, original CAD and binder combs.

If you want to stamp your book do it before you bind it. Assemble your book papers and hold them in place with binder clips. Holding the comb on the book’s back cover mark where you want to punch your holes. You will need to punch 2 holes side by side for each binding comb leg to fit through. Punch holes. Feed the “legs” through the holes. Decorate and you are done!

The pages will lay flat!

Now I need to get party favors, I have pirate flags and compasses bit I think I may get pink bandannas or some cute pirate wooden necklaces they have for $1 at JoAnns. There is a Vegan chocolate mousse cake recipe in Vegetarian Times this month that I may make in addition to the scull & cross bones cupcakes. If you have any good ideas for party favors leave me a comment, I’d love some ideas!

A SVG Freebie for you!

I’ll warn you, this post will be longer than usual so grab a frosty cold beverage and get comfy. As you know I love using my Sure Cuts A lot software (SCAL) with my Cricut. I just learned how to design my own files that I can cut with SCAL and my Cricut using a free program called Inkscape.  I love the look of artisan shapes and thought “I’d like to have a cool bracket frame”, well it was super easy to make in SCAL by welding 4 parenthesis brackets together (you could do it in Design Studio as well for that matter) but I also would like to share the file with others so they can resize it however they want so I make one in Inkscape and saved it as a SVG file so you can use it with SCAL and a Cricut and hopefully other die cutting machines. If you are scrappin it old school you can download Inkscape, resize the shape how you want it, print journaling in it if desired, print it on the paper of your choice, cut it out and put it on your card or layout. Easy Peasy! Here is a layout I did using my bracket frame, I glittered the frame and placed it over a pic of me and my daughters and I used the middle of the frame as my journaling block. I stamped some swirls around the edges using the large stamp in Inque Boutique’s Storyboard set. I love how you get 2 shapes from one die cut (3 if you use the negative space around the frame!)

I went a little overboard with the glitter!

Then I decided a shaped card would be pretty so I imported my shape into SCAL and made it fill half the mat (I am using the original 6″x12″ Cricut) and clicked “weld” then I copy and pasted the shape again (to make sure bot halves of my card would be the same size) then I flipped my second shape (to keep the card symmetrical) clicked weld and overlapped the two shapes on the edges. That’s also how I made the scallop card with the glitter in it.

Click here for the SVG file. I hope you enjoy it. If you have any trouble please leave me a comment and I’ll try to help you. If you want to download Inkscape click here. If you don’t have SCAL you can get it here, it’s $70 but you can download a 10 free trial to see if you like it. The trial version will cut horozontal lines through your design as a watermark but you can see how well it works before you buy.

I also cut all of the flourishes, swirls and title in SCAL. Fonts used were all freebies: Victorian LET, Designs Galore and KR Swash Buckler.

Thanks for reading through this long post! Have a great weekend!
