Pretty Watercolor Magnolia and an Idea for Your Artwork!

Hi friends! Today I will show you how to paint this pretty magnolia:

DCF 1.0
DCF 1.0

I teamed up with Snapfish to come up with a fun way to showcase artwork. I’m sure you know what a good job Snapfish does with photo printing but you can create so many awesome things with your artwork too! They have a lot of fun items you can have your art printed on in addition to cards, calendars, canvases and books! You can even have your art printed on blankets and pet beds! Take a look at what I had my painting printed on in today’s video!

Supplies:

  • Watercolor paper
  • Watercolors (Grumbacher set of 12 transparent)
  • Watercolor  (Koh-I-Noor)
  • 140# watercolor paper
  • pencil
  • 1″ wash and #8 round brush (Grumbacher)
  • Paper towel, water bucket, tape
  • Reference photo

I had a lot of folks ask me to do a long version of this painting and I am thinking of doing it again for Fridays live show. What do you think? Should I do a long version in watercolor, oils, pastels or acrylics? Let me know in the comments below. I had so much fun partnering with Snapfish on this video and I was really impressed with the quality of the print on the pillow, I also wanted to mention that unzip the cover if you need to wash it. Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

Paint this sunset in watercolors LIVE today!

Hi Friends! Today at 12:30 ET I will have a free live painting class on my YouTube channel, we will paint this:

chapelblog

You can watch the live show or the replay here but if you want to hang out in the chat be sure to watch it on the You Tube watch page. Here is the pattern for the chapel, you can print it whatever size you like. Position the chapel on your watercolor paper 1/3 of the way up and from the side in the lower right hand corner. This makes use of the ‘rule of thirds’ which I will explain in the video.

This project uses a limited palette of colors, only 4! I will be suing Turner Watercolors available exclusively at Jerry’s Artarama but you can use any brand you like. You will need:

  • A cool pinkish red (Alizarin Crimson, Quin. Magenta, Rose Red, Maya Red)
  • A warm yellow (Permanent Gamboge, Cadmium Yellow, Indian Yellow)
  • A warm blue (Ultramarine or cobalt)
  • Burnt Sienna

Brushes: I am using an assortment of Mimik faux squirrel and faux kolinski brushes from Jerry’s Artarama. You don’t have to have the exact size I have, just try to use something similar. I like the faux squirrel brushes for the sky because they hold a ton of juicy paint!

Paper: I am working on a 12″x16″ block of Canson Montville #140 cold pressed watercolor paper, if you are working smaller you can use smaller brushes. For instance if you were working on a 5″x7″ watercolor greeting card a 3/4″ flat would be more appropriate than the 2″ wash and you could omit the #30 round and use a #10 instead.

The Reference photo can be found at Paint My Photo.

You can watch the video in this player or on the YouTube watch page:

Let’s paint an icy cold landscape!

Hi friends! This week has been so cold in Maine, we have had sub-zero temps every night this week and I have to say that I am looking forward to spring. Ah, well, if you can’t escape it then you might as well paint it! This project uses only 3 colors of paint, a 9″x12″ sheet of 140# watercolor paper and whatever brushes you like.
