Couch Art?

Hi friends! When I hear the term “couch art” it is usually referring to pretty paintings that you would hang above the couch but today I am going to share a sketch created from the couch.

22467485_10210301254793188_3933370184587335570_o.jpg

Sometimes you just need to let go of perfection, take away the pressure to produce and just draw with no expectation. I think that is why adult coloring books are so popular nowadays.  We just need some quiet time to create. Coloring, drawing and painting can be very meditative and soothing, in fact you might be hard pressed to worry about anything when you are being creative. 🙂 So, if you are feeling restless, anxious, tired or down have a rest on the sofa, make a nice hot cup of tea, grab your supplies and create some beautiful couch art. Take care of yourself and happy crafting!

Daydream Art Journal page (from a failed Inktober sketch)

Hi friends! This started out as a messy inkblot from a failed sketch but after a opened up my journal a picture appeared!

BTW I did post a whopping 2 videos on my YouTube channel today, my regular inktober and a Konmari VLOG if you want something extra:) But here is the process of how I turned a rorschach looking inkblot into an art journal spread.

Video!

Supplies:

This was a fun, learn as you go project. That’s why I narrated it after the fact. I hope you try some of these techniques to rescue a page too! Happy crafting!

I hope to have a live show tonight, but for now a mermaid…

Hi friends! I am writing this post on Tuesday night, my van is packed with camping gear and I am about to head into the wilderness with a spirited group of 46 8th grade students. I am excited to chaperone this school trip but I am not a camper. I will get back in town late Friday afternoon and depending on what shape I am in I’d like to do the weekly live show at 7pm. If you are subscribed to me on YouTube and you clicked the bell icon you will get notified when and if I go live 🙂 I didn’t want to leave you hanging incase I am totally beat after this trip so I prepared a little mixed media painting in my art journal for you:

mermaidblog

Providing I scheduled everything right you should be able to watch it in the player below, if not, wait and hour and try again (incase I messed up the times LOL!) Also, warning, this is a time-lapse, I know some people don’t like them but it was the best vehicle for this project. I hope you enjoy it!

Video!

Supplies:

You know the drill, use what you have. Mixed media is the “wild west” of painting! Be a rebel, splash on some ink, break the rules and have a blast! The main reason the video was not live narrated is because I didn’t have a clue what I was going to do next! Relax, let go and create with abandon! Giddyup!

Before I go!!!

There is just 2 days to get 50% off my new watercolor course Texture Toolbox: Feathers & Fowl! Learn the techniques to paint birds successfully and these techniques will cross over to your other paintings. Use coupon FOWL50 if the discount doesn’t show up.

Wish me luck on the camping trip and hopefully I’ll see you live on YouTube tonight! Til then happy crafting!

Mixed Media with Limited Supplies!

Hi friends! Have you ever created with supplies someone else picked for you? It can be fun to challenge yourself to use a limited amount of colors and supplies because then your creativity can soar. It can also keep you from getting overwhelmed with too many options.

When I opened my Smart Art kit this month I was pleased to see items I was familiar with in colors I did not have. The color palette was very limited so I put my thinking cap on as to what I could create with it. Working with a color palette of bright yellow, bright orange, grey, black and pale aqua was tricky to say the least. Watch the video to see what I created!

Sponsored by Smart Art. Past kits available here.

Supplies:

  • Gelatos (50’s diner colors with brush and blender stick)
  • Watercolor paper
  • Stencils
  • Stampers Big Brush Pen in Black
  • Additional brushes
  • Other supplies not it kit: Water bucket and credit card scraper

I always found whenever I traveled anywhere to create that I got more done the less I brought. I also had to be more creative and stretch my supplies. You don’t have to subscribe to an art subscription box (although Smart Art Box is a great option if you do) to enjoy working from a limited supply. You can easily box up a few supplies from your stash and make your own DIY kit to create from! It works even better it you bring the box outside of your craft area to create as you won’t be tempted to reach for other supplies. It’s funny how using LESS can make you MORE creative! So, look in your art stash and find something that you haven’t used yet (or used in a while) and make yourself an art kit! It is so fun! Or if you want someone else to do the work for you check out Smart Art Box, they ship to many countries worldwide. Let me know in the comments below what unloved product you would add to your kit and til next time happy crafting!

Better Late Than Never {Mixed Media Vineyard Grapes}

Hi friends! I am so sorry that I couldn’t get this blog post up before the live stream today. I just remembered yesterday that I scheduled my last kids art class at the library at the same time as my friday live stream and it had been advertised in the local paper so I couldn’t move it so instead of cancelling my live stream I decided to do it earlier. One of these days I’ll have my act together (probably not this summer though!) 😉 I did notify folks on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram so if you want to make sure you hear about any breaking art live streams be sure to follow me there as well. The best thing is to subscribe on YouTube and click the notification bell to make sure you get updates when I am about to go live.  Here is what we did today!

Mixed Media Tips for Art Journals & More!

Hi Friends! I have decided to turn on my camera while I create for fun. During these sessions I listen to audio books or music and zone out in the creative process. I never know if the project will turn out well or not, I just enjoy the process. This painting took over an hour to create and it was a lot of fun just playing with products!

I packed the video full of quick tips and techniques that you can apply to your next painting!

Supplies (Feel free to use what you have!)

*Affiliate links provided are to Consumer Crafts who sells vastly discounted art and craft products. They have fantastic prices on Darice and Crafters Companion products and many other brands too.

During this speed paint video I will talk about the process of creating this piece and how layers are built starting with a watercolor wash, adding metallic inks and layers of darker paint. The we build body with gouache and finally add detail with colored pencils. After the colored pencil layer is laid down you can adjust further with more watercolor if desired, just be aware that it will not stick fully to the pencil area. We will talk tips and techniques through this painting that took me more than 1 hour to create in real time. I hope you find these tips helpful in your next painting and til next time happy crafting!
