Hi friends! I hope you are having a lovely weekend. It is that time of year when these beautiful red berries start popping up along the side of the road in my area. I think they are so festive and they welcome in the fall and winter seasons for me. You can find a real-time version of these bittersweet berries in a Ball jar in Critique club along with over 90 other real-time art lessons and monthly prompts all for only $5 a month! In today’s timelapse you can see the painting come together as I share tips for working in oils and water-mixable oils.
Supplies and other resources:
- You can find a watercolor version of this tutorial for free here
- (Affiliate links used) Lukas berlin water mixable oils
- 11″x14″ canvas panel
- Mimik hog brushes *The menta faux hog and zen faux hog brushes are good values for those wanting a cheaper synthetic hog brush. I think the mimiks hold up a bit better tho. For details, I recommend the Creative Mark Black Swan which is a synthetic red squirrel *Since these brushes are meant for oils and oil is generally painted on an easel these brushes have long handles. I just want you to be aware in case you paint at a table.
- Feel free to paint this in acrylics or gouache if you prefer. Golden Open Acrylics is a slow-drying paint I recommend if you want to convert an oil tutorial to acrylics. Blick has a good price and selection, I recommend the 6 tube sets to start and then adding open stock tubes as needed
That’s all for today! Happy crafting!
