Brush Set Giveaway! Chicken Sketchbook Sunday & Tips for Working with Gouache!

Hi friends! I had so much fun playing with gouache in my sketchbook today. I forget how awesome gouache (opaque watercolor) paint is and how fun and forgiving it is to paint with.

Speaking or Royal & Langnickel I am the Featured Artist on the Month! You can read the article here. I am so thrilled to be featured by a company whose brushes I have used for decades, I hope you give it a read:)

OK, now on to the Sketchbook Sunday video! I hope you enjoy it!

Supplies: (Affiliate links may be used)

Tips for Gouache:
1. Work dark to light.

2.Work in thin layers (use a light touch to layer or be more aggressive to blend back to previous layers)

3. Use alone or with other media (over watercolor and marker, under pastel and colored pencil)

4. Mat and frame under glass as you would a watercolor.

5. Do not work in thick layers because the paint can crack.

6. Paper or matboard are excellent surfaces for gouache as it can bond well. Avoid using it on canvas or acrylic primed surfaces as the paint may not adhere well.

7. Play, experiment and have fun!

I hope the video give you insight on my process. I think diving in with the dark color can give you confidence and also speeds up the process because you get the dark values established quickly and you don’t have to fight the white paint which can overtake things quickly and muddy things up. If you want more help on your art journey, including real-time versions of 2 sketchbook sunday paintings a month consider joining critique club. You can post your current paintings and get a detailed critique from me and encouragement from other members, so you can improve and reach your artistic goals. Learn more here!

And one more shameless plug for the road…

If you want to paint better birds I have a class on that too:  Texture Toolbox Feathers & Fowl where you can learn how to capture the beauty of birds and the textures of feathers and plumage by following along with four step by step real-time tutorials with patterns included. There is also an archived list of all past bird tutorials I have created in case you are looking for something specific.

Phew! That was a long post! Don’t forget to leave a comment for a chance to win a set of brushes, give gouache a chance and til next time happy crafting!

  65. Hi Lindsay! I really enjoyed your chicken painting, she turned out lovely! I also wanted to say thanks for the information you provided about gouache. I started out painting with oils, but I rarely do it anymore because cleanup is such a hassle. After spending hours painting and exhausting my creative energy, I really dislike the time it takes to clean everything. I’ve started getting into watercolor, but as you mentioned, I do find the transparency a bit frustrating at times. I hate acrylics, so I think I’ll take your advice and try out some non-acrylic gouache. It sounds like it just might be a good medium for me. Thanks for doing what you do and providing us with so much information and inspiration! ***brush set preference: mermaid***

I just got the Arteza gouache for Christmas, and this is the perfect project to start on. Thank you for sharing! I contacted Arteza about their lightfast ratings, and I’m confused by their response. The three stars (which is most of the gouache colors) is their lowest lightfast rating. However, the bright pink is two stars, so it is more lightfast than their white, black, and other colors that are generally lightfast. They haven’t responded to my latest email asking for clarification, and how they perform their tests. Have they answered any of those questions for you? Thank you.

    Like

    1. congrats, you are a brush winner, check your email. They don’t preform the tests, they get the info from their supplier and some companies use the blue wool scale and some use ASTM, their pencils are opposite of what they say. Whatever the black, brown and earth tones say those will be the highest so you can adjust your reading of the ratings that way.

I have used the R & L brushes in the past (the blue handle series) and would

  174. Hi Lindsay,

I have four sets of gouache paints and always wanted to paint a gouache-only painting. Your video gave me motivation and opportunity to do something new from what I have been doing – which is watercolor and oil painting.

I started watercolor over a year ago, mostly from self-paced and YouTube videos. I enjoyed your videos and completed a few very nice paintings – many thanks. Watercolor taught me a lot about colors – something very useful in my oil painting classes that I took at a local community college.

I have a collection of brushes – two cups full of just watercolor brushes. Your video appears to indicate that there is some difference between gouache and watercolor brushes. Can you elaborate and maybe recommend some gouache brushes?

One of my gouache sets comes in pans – Caran D’ache Gouache studio of 15 colors with 14 pans and one white tube. Like you, I prefer not have to squeeze tubes during painting. Maybe you like to try it – not that you don’t have enough paints already 🙂

Thank you again for the video. Your hen got the attitude!

LOL It was fun to see you enjoying yourself and your guoache – I have some and have not had time to play. Soon! Thank you for the brush giveaway contest – I love Royal & Langnickel’s products! ❤️👏🏻

And I just recently purchased the primary colors from Holbein. Definitely going to practice a lot with this medium in 2019!

  255. I love your videos and appreciate the advice you give during your demos! I start college back up on Monday to finish up my associates degree in Art and I have my first painting class this semester! Would be nice to have a set of those fun brushes! I am so glad you did a chicken, they are one of my favorites to paint. I painted a rooster on a small non useable wall in my living room and it was so much fun because of the coloring and layers of feathers. You are inspiring! Thanks!!

  260. I’m not usually a chicken/rooster person but I really really like your painting (WOW! Shocker! LOL!). She looks like someone’s going in to get her egg though….LOL! – – actually maybe that’s why I like her 🙂 No matter what medium you use, I seem to learn something! In a previous lifetime I really only painted acrylics, did charcoal sketching & chalk pastels. Occasionally I would do watercolor but I always felt like the bit about not being able to “use a white” was too much of a drawback for me. LOL! Because that was how it was taught to me. When I did my own KonMari journey I discovered I still had brushes I purchased as a newlywed & don’t even remember anything about. I looked them up & happily discovered they are Royal & Langnickel. The article is really interesting and it’s so cool they are featuring you! I live in North Carolina currently & I am in my “pink period” – [3 years ago I detested EVERY shade of pink- go figure] so I think the Unicorn brushes would be fabulous but the Mermaid brushes are lovely also! I don’t think you could go wrong with either!

  269. Hi Lindsay. Those mythos mermaid brushes are great. Hold more paint and deposit better than mimiks without watering down the paint picking up from the pans. Beautiful even washes with less reloading. Used for watercolors. Plus the 7 brush set on Amazon works out to 2 bucks a brush. Very happy with them. Thanks Lindsay. And congrats on artist of the month. You should be artist of the Year!
