What do you think of speedpaints?

Hi friends! I hope you had a great weekend! As you might have noticed during Friday’s live stream I had a few tech difficulties, hey it happens with live-shows, I’ve learned to go with the flow. 😀 It took much longer than expected to edit out the big glitch in the replay so while I was waiting I took the footage and made a speedpaint (you can watch it below if you like) and surprisingly several people on YouTube said they liked it better than the long version because they don’t have time to watch an hour-long video.

So I am thinking that I might take the footage from past live shows and turn them into speedpaints with a voice over if anyone would be interested, let me know in the comments below. Don’t worry, I have NO INTENTION of speeding up my regular videos, this would be an “in addition to” not an “in place of” situation. at the very least I might just make a speed version of the live shows going forward and see if anyone watches it LOL:) It actually might be kind cool, people can pick what suits them best! In any event I hope you enjoy this bonus speedpaint and if you want more info on the supplies and products I used as well as the real-time tutorial you can find all of that on Friday’s post.

One more thing! Today is the last day to get the birthday special on my Essential Tools and Techniques for Watercolor course. Use the coupon code BITRHDAY41 to get my class for $41 (that is 48%off!) if the discount does not appear in cart. I have tried to post a link with the discount attached so nobody pays full price on accident:) I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart for making my first watercolor course a success. I started with a beginner course because that was what you asked for. My next courses will be more advanced but I believe with a strong foundation of skills you will be able to break down a subject, no matter how daunting, and paint it.

Also thank you for the wonderful birthday wishes, it has made my 41st birthday truly magical:) Till next time happy crafting!

  1. I think the speed painting works for more advanced painters. Your step by step videos have turned my rather beginner skills into more advanced skills and I even have framed some of my work. I would not have done that before watching many of your videos. I like having both, but please don’t even consider giving up the longer ones. I love you and your work…you have helped me so much. Love your course too.

  2. No speedpaints. Huss beginners need to know step by step what’s going on and I’ve watched other speedpaints and was very frustrated which is why I like you so much. Maybe a speedpaint once in awhile but please stick to your original instruction I think that’s what makes you so popular

  3. I enjoy your speed paints! But I also love to paint along. Will this mean two versions of the painting will be available (a playback of the livestream and a speedpaint)?

      1. Awesome! I work during the time you have your live videos. I’m extremely grateful you keep them posted so I can watch them later 🙂

  4. l like both .Once l watch the live show l often go back through the video and replay sections and skip some partswhich is selective rather than speed. So to have speed videos to compliment the live painting vids would be great. Loving all the painting tutorials.

  5. For some tutorials, they go so slow, I have to skip around. However, I enjoy your demos, no matter how long, because you reveal your thought processes while painting – and that, imho, is the key to learning. Don’t ever change.

  6. I love the idea of a speed paint in addition to but only if it’s not too much trouble for you. I really enjoy the full length ones, but sometimes I need to go back to see how or why you ❤did something or what you might have said. I found the speed play after the live to be a good refresher. I’d watch both versions!

  7. hi Lindsay I did not think I would like the speedpaint as I have watched other people do them but I really did like yours, it was great, I would love more. Now if I could just get mine to come out like yours…..

  8. I love the idea of the speedpaint videos. It’s seldom I can spend an hour watching a video, and I don’t want to miss anything, so it seems the perfect solution!

  9. Your speedpaint was VERY helpful! (It was like reviewing all your course before taking a final exam :D…pulled together and refreshed all the pertinent info!) It would be wonderful to have the speedpaints available…sometimes I have missed alot of what you do, because I just don’t have that time to give. This is a great learning tool. Thank you, Lindsay, for all you share…the time you give, sharing your talent, has enriched my Life! ♥♥♥

  10. Hi Lindsay – I watched this speedpaint and loved it- especially because you added a voiceover. I think speedpaints have gotten a bad name with learners b/c there are so many speedpainting videos with music backgrounds instead of tips and explanations from the artist. Really, though, whatever you do, I’ll watch. I appreciate your work. Thanks!

  11. I watch speed paints for entertainment, but I NEED the follow along versions, since I am so new at watercolor. When all the glitches were happening during the live show, I was thinking “Oh Lindsay, please don’t get discouraged by the tech issues and stop doing the live shows!”
I think most people have enough patience to wait for the issues to clear up. I know I do, and I so appreciate your videos. 🙂

  12. As long as it is an “in addition to”. As a beginner, I don’t seem to be able to do a good job with the speed ones, even stopping them. One of the things that I enjoy most about yours, (in addition to the painting) is listening to you answer questions regarding various materials, etc. Plus just listening to your general conversation is nice. Though I don’t always have an hour either. Sometimes I just watch, and paint later on YouTube with you. When I am actually painting, it is nice to have that time. In fact, taped, I still pause it to work on something. Keep up the good work! You did a very good job going with the flow! I watched on Friday. I would have been a nervous wreck! If you have any tips for going with the flow, PLEASE SHARE!

  13. Hello! I like the longer videos better if they seem too long for me I can always fast forward a bit here and there so I appreciate that you don’t plan on making them all speed paint. But to have an option of one or the other that would be Terrific idea! That way people can choose what best suits them like you said! I love all of your watercolor and videos you do such beautiful work! Thank you!

All your tutorials are very helpful and I enjoy them very much. My daughters and I live far from each other (they live in same neighborhood so can meet at each other’s homes) we will often pick a day and time to watch one of them together and learn the. Ew watercolor skills with each other while FaceTime-ing. They also love your tutorials and have beached out to some of your other crafting videos…like making cards with the kiddos.

  18. Speedpaint would be awesome! I love to watch you create and I love to hear you chit chat and give amazing tips; however and although I would rather watch them all, sometimes I am unable to complete the vid and then it slips my mind to finish when I have time. 😢 sooo…I am all for it please!!! Thanks!!!

  19. I love your live streams — I don’t always get a chance to watch them in real time, but always enjoy them when you repost them. I’m fortunate that I usually have the time to watch an hour video — and yours are always awesome. That being said, I think I would also very much enjoy a speed paint with a voice over. Definitely need the voice over, though, because it’s your tips and techniques that really make the videos stellar. Thank you Lindsay, for all your great content. You were the first YouTuber that I subscribed to and you are still my favorite! (Wanda, from Oregon)

  20. I find the speed paint videos frustrating as everything looks so easy and always turns out good. The long videos are comforting as they let me know exactly what to use, what to expect and even how to correct little slips. Please do not give up on the long videos.

  22. Hi Lindsay– I started to panic when I was reading your post. I thought noooooo please don’ t take away the real time videos. For people who don’t have the time for a longer video I think it’s a good idea for speed paint. But for the rest of us, which I bet there are quite a few, we love your real time. It’s not just the step-by-step but also listening to the little tips and the humor and all the extra you put in. So thank you for saying you won’t give up the real time. It is so appreciated by so many of us. You are always a bright spot in my day. Thank you so much for your valuable time and efforts and giving us the benefits of your skilled teaching abilities.

Your speed paint video was very nicely done, but I would be sad if the real time videos disappeared!
I thank you for all you do!! I look forward to your next online class!

  24. I love this idea! I try to watch first, then go back, and watch the high lights and paint along. I think this would make it easier for me to see where I am going, vs. seeing all the detail again! How much time do you put into all this? Thank you for your inspirational blog and tutorials!

  25. Hmmm, I personally would prefer the long, real time…I need the tons of info that you relay in the real videos. But, if other people enjoy the speed painting, and you have the time, then I think it’d be great.

  26. I really like the speed option and I would probably watch and use both! I like the full length for painting along and learning but the speed option is great if I don’t have time or when I paint the scene again. Thanks for offering both! Your videos are the best!

  28. Sometimes, when I’m pressed for time, or know that I’m going to re-watch as I paint along, I just speed up the video a little bit (LOL)! That way I still get to enjoy your commentary and also learn a new technique or two. I want to thank you in particular for NOT only speed painting. I learn so much more from your posts because you explain why you are using a particular technique, choosing a color, how to fix little “oopsies” when they occur, and in general, it’s just calming and reassuring to have you talk us through a painting. Glad you are only thinking about speed painting as an additional version.
