Beginner Face Sketching Tutorial with Tri-Tone pencils

Hi friends! Today we are going to draw a face. This tutorial is aimed at beginners. You can do this! Feel free to use a regular pencil if you are new to drawing faces, you can do all of the sketching and shading with that if you like!

I drew this face while I was watching TV, just doodleing in my sketchbook with Tri-tone colored pencils because I had bought them last year but had never really liked them. I think they might be fun to take on vacation so I was giving them a little test drive. Turns out  I really enjoyed them this time around! It just goes to show you that you should give unloved supplies another chance from time to time! I kept this tutorial real time (I had live streamed it but there was an audio issue so I re-recorded the bad audio) because I think beginners might like the extra “how and why’s” of this sketch. I hope you enjoy it!

I have the Tri-Tone set of 12 colors but I think the set of 24 would be more useful. Products are linked to Blitsy where they are on sale. These are affiliate links so I earn a small commission if you purchase at no additional cost to you and I thank you for your support! Below is a photo of the tri-tone pencils so you can see the variation of colors in the lead.

They are really kinda neat and I want to try some landscape sketching with them! Would you try these pencils, let me know in the comments below and til next time happy crafting!

  1. Y look like they would be good for all sorts of things — landscapes, florals, etc. Nothing in nature is one solid color!

  2. Dear Lindsay, how about showing us how to draw a middle aged woman? An older woman? A man? Just some thoughts for you. Thanks for sharing your gifts by making these tutorials.

  3. I have these pencils. I colored flowers with them. I like them up close, when I hold it farther away it looks like I missed spots because of the variation.

  4. I am glad you revisited these pencils. I purchased them after your first video, and really like them! They make blending and shading so easy, once you get used to the color combos and how they come off the pencil as you draw and color.
