Brushes Demystified & Brush Set Giveaway!

Update! Giveaway closed, thanks to all that entered, the winner is: Janet Okelley!

Also the Fabart interchangeable brush sets are back in stock and the 20% off coupon code: 7XOWSQJ9 has been extended through 12/7/16

Hi friends! Have you ever wandered through the art store and wondered what all of those artist brushes were used for? Well today you are in luck because I will tell you {almost} everything you ever wanted to know about brushes but were afraid to ask;)

brushblog

This video is packed with information and techniques. You might even want to grab your brushes and some scrap paper and try some of the brushstrokes along with me to help you learn what brushes do what. I hope you find this video helpful!

Video!

OK, I have some good news and some bad news, the good news is that I get to give away a set (paint brushes or knitting needles) of your choice from the FABART store, the bad news is that the interchangeable brush set I demonstrated in the video sold out within hours of the video going live. I have talked to the manufacturer and they hope to have more brushes in next week. In the meantime I want to know in the comments what brush set (or knitting needles) would you like to win if I picked your name. Have a look at these sets and let me know in the comments below! Remember you can pick the set I used in the video because they will be back in stock soon;) I will pick a lucky person in a week and they will win their pick!

This blogpost is sponsored by FABART! Use coupon code 7XOWSQJ9 to save 20% at FABART (Also Amazon Prime members get free 2 day shipping!) They have another 12 brush set that I like for watercolors and it has most of the shapes that the interchangeable set has and the bristles are dense and absorbent and it comes in a travel case. This set is not as compact as the one in the video because all the brushes have permanent handles but it is a great alternative!

In this video you will learn many ways to use the following brushes:

Round Brush
Liner Brush
Spotter Brush
Dagger Brush
Angle Brush
Flat Brush
Bright Brush
Fan Blender
Rake Brush
Deerfoot Stippler
Filbert/Oval Wash
Cat’s Tongue

I hope this helps you get more use out of your brushes and gives you the courage to try something new! Don’t forget to leave your brush set pick in the comments below because you might win your choice next week! Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

  7. Outstanding video! You never cease to amaze me (and amuse me too). The travel brushes would be nice as a winning gift as I have recently retired (after 30 years) and we are packing up that old 5th wheel to do some traveling. My Sweetie thinks we should tow a 12 foot trailer for all my crafty stuff…. now that is an idea, but I am sure it was a “cheeky” reply on his part.

  8. Loved the video! I have been painting a bit but in oil, not watercolor, so good to know what (some) of my brushes can do when I get some new paints! If I won I would want the 12-piece artist quality set. Shame there isn’t a crochet hook set like the knitting set! XD

I am very glad I found your channel following some youtube-chains looking at watercolors! ^_– lot’s of vids I hope to find time to watch!

  13. Wow! I sure had a surprise coming to me!! I “thought” I ordered the interchangeable brush set! I literally ordered it while watching your video the night you posted it. But I guess when the set you were showing sold out, either Amazon or Fabart had the link you posted switch to the full size set, and I didn’t notice. So now I have the full size brushes coming to me tomorrow! I was SO looking forward to those interchangeable ones!! I did get to use the coupon code, so that’s something. No worries; I’d love to win your set 🙂 but if not, I’ll keep checking for it to be back in stock!

  19. Hello Lindsay! I love watching your videos, both for your beautiful art and entertaining and informative commentary! Your brush video showed me so many brushes that I didn’t know existed, and now I want them all 😅 You are actually the reason why I started watercolour, and now I’m totally addicted. If I won, I would love the travel set of watercolour brushes with the interchangeable handles. So far, I’ve been exploring the wonderful world of watercolours with my trusty size 8 round, which is in desperate need of a vacation after being carted to and fro every day. Your videos are often the highlights of my week and always a place to unwind with some paints. Thanks you for all your time and generosity that goes into them.

PS. I now own a 24 set of the gorgeous Mjello Mission Gold paints thanks to you. Thank you! Also, I’m Canadian, which I wanted to tell you in case shipping would be an issue.

  21. Great video. It’s kind of funny, the day before I had spent about 3 hours searching YouTube for beginner water color tuts that went through and explained the different brushes and listed exercises/techniques to do. (I found a few but none had your great personality (I love that you just chat and laugh and have a good time in your videos, it’s contagious and makes me laugh and have a good time too rather than stressing that my painting is not as good as yours), and most never said “hey try this it is great quality but less expensive” –seriously, the majority of them were like you want nothing less than cold press, 300lb paper and [insert high end brand name here] professional pigments and [insert high end brand name here] brushes)

A few years ago I inherited all my Grandmother’s art stuff, and have no idea what half of it is for (my crafting at the time was limited to photography, beading, and woodworking). Last year I discovered you and your videos. Your videos have helped a lot; with figuring out what is what, different techniques and ways of doing things, and places to go for more tutorials and classes (lol, I asked for Craftsy classes for X-mas).

As much as I love having my Grandmother’s brushes, she worked mostly with oils. Maybe I’m doing something wrong or they are to old, but the brushes don’t seem to play well with water color; needless to say I could use a set of new brushes. I would love the travel set or the 12 piece artist set.

  49. I enjoyed the quick trip down memory lane, lol. My first art teacher went through each brush thusly while we copied and experimented. I also use the round as my go to in most of my paintings. I can get many of same strokes with it as the other paintbrushes. I do, however, love a choice of quality brushes. The interchangeable set would be grand but, if I win, I’d settle for the regular handled set.

I have learned so much from your many teachings. You have helped me save materials but get the best quality. When I heard your video about the brushes, I was so happy because maybe I could win these brushes that I have never tried. When I did my tiger painting I had to individually paint the strokes or sqeeze the brush(which didn’t give great results). The rake will definitely help me. The fan is a new thing. I live half the year in Asia and this kit will surely help me during my travel. The deerfoot technique was an awesome technique I learned. Like you, I did not graduate from an art school. I am a retired and trying to improve my new found hobby. Watching your videos are do VERY VERY helpful to me. 68. I would love the brushes from your video! My big problem is that most of my brushes are really cheap, and the paint comes off the handles and the handles separate from the bristles– and not in a good way like these. Since I paint in both watercolor and acrylic, these would be great!

  72. Awesome video! It would be very helpful for me if I watched it in the beginning of my painting journey. Nontheless, it was still you who inspired me to try out watercolours and be less caught up on details so my painting became definitely more flowy and free.
When it comes to brushes, I usually use my big ol’ round that I bought from Berlin when I was visiting my sister. It packs so much water and yet holds its point, it’s like magic! And it’s cruelty free which I always appreciate, since the bristles are synthetic. I also use big flat for watercolours, for bigger washes, and it was cheap as well!
In acrylics, that I just recently picked up, I use mostly big flats, filberts and rounds, along with palette knife to create texture.
I have a big collection of brushes (I’m pretty sure it’s well over 50) and I wish I had brushes of better quality. I’m thinking about giving my brushes that I don’t use all that much to my niece and replace them with some better ones.

From the Fabart, I’d choose the set you presented in the video, since it looks like a perfect travel kit.

  87. Lindsay,
This video should be played the first day of Art 101. I have a degree in art and never had a demonstration of what each type of brush could achieve. My University also had no courses in watercolor so you have become that instructor for me. Thank you. I only found you this year and have been working my way through your tutorials. Even when I mess up l just hear you saying ” it’s only paper” or ” try fixing it with colored pencils.” I rescued the crow on the fence and the water lily that way and I rather like both of them now. I leave town every weekend and take my watercolors along. Have some water brushes but the brushes you demonstrated are genius. Please keep the tutorials coming, I just sketched out the birds nest to paint. Keep your fingers crossed it stays a watercolor and I don’t have to haul out the colored pencils.

  100. You did a great job explaining brush types. Many people who have videos on brushes only focus on different types of hairs/synthetic fibers brushes can be made out of or just tell you which type are better for what kind of paintings; I like how you explained each type and demonstrated them. I really like the brushes you demonstrated in the video.

  101. GONE,.. all gone!!.. ::Sobs quietly in her tissue::. As I was watching your informative video on the set of travel brushes by Fabart, I paused you and immediately put the set in my cart at Amazon. I finished watching your video, and, when time permitted went to Amazon to complete the purchase. ::Snivels:: but… but it was too late!! Your demonstration of the set caused a massive stampede to all the known sources for these brushes and when the dust settled… ::sigh: there was not one to be found… ::sniffles:: So….. , I would LOVE to have the opportunity to own that set. ::Dries her eyes::… Whew, I feel a little better getting that off my chest! Thank you much Lindsey for sharing your knowledge freely with the masses. ::smiles, remembers she is supposed to be barely recovering from her sadness at missing out on the brush rush::… jk… xoxo Angie

  114. I have not used watercolors since I was a little girl. Quite honestly I never got the point of using them until, out of the blue, BAM … WATERCOLORS, it is all I can think of!! Because of my sudden discovery of this “new” medium, I began watching your insightful videos to quickly learn all I can (which only fuels my craving). Thank you for educating, entertaining and inspiring me. In recent years I have dabbled in acrylics (mostly for small Rosemaling projects). Currently the brushes I have range from 10/0 to size 4 filbert and a few liners too. I think it is high time I try my hand at watercolors and get used to painting with “BIG, JUICY brushes.” 🙂 I would be thrilled to be chosen for either paint brush set, but if you twisted my arm I would be forced to say you made me fall in love with the FABART interchangeable brush head travel kit used in your video. I am now inspired to share this with my family and friends. I do not mind waiting for FABART to replenish their stock. After all, I have waited this long to start painting in watercolors, what is a little longer going to hurt. 🙂

  126. Great video!
I LOVE these brushes! I’ve messed up a few brushes taking them place to place. Those look slick!
Awesome info! Makes sense to get even kids some good brushes, so they’ll enjoy painting much more! I remember being frustrated with brushes that came with paint sets as a kid. Had I not taken a class & tried some good brushes, I probably would miss out on the fun of painting (at least with brush).
I think this has reminded me & inspired me to get the grandkids some good brushes & paints for Christmas!
It’s great to find your & other classes, paint parties, etc. online! It’s brought me back to painting/crafts in a big way! TY! I’m really enjoying it!
A good brush for the job certainly makes a HUGE difference, and the difference between being frustrated or having a great time!

If I win, I want the paintbrushes in the video would be preferred (another paintbrush set would be 2nd choice, knitting needles would be 3rd choice)! I hope this set comes back ASAP! What a tease! (Although I understand why they sold out! What a great idea to have removable handles!

My granddaughter’s & grandson would LOVE these for Christmas! (So would I!) These look REALLY nice for traveling to & from classes! I’ve been using an old calendar, one of those bamboo ones that we used to see in Chinese restaurants, for many years! I painted over the calendar with gesso, then weaved elastic through it.
I REALLY like these brushes! I’m going to have to give these a try! My GD is in college & taking art classes along with her other classes & these would be GREAT for her going to & from school!
SO nice of you to share uses of brushes! I’ve never seen the “Cat’s tongue” brushes, but I’ve cut a couple of brushes up to create something similar! 🙂 Cutting ends & edges of those really cheap foam brushes has it’s uses as well!
This brush set will be cherished!
(I have a few brushes I’ve literally had for over 35 years, and while they certainly aren’t in their “glory days”, I have taken great care of them, kept paint on the tips & out of the feral, not left them soaking in water (or linseed oil) up past the feral, which seems more than anything to destroy brushes quickly!
Great care can take great quality brushes a LONG way! I just painted yesterday, use a new brush for part of it & realized I needed new brushes quite a while ago, yet STILL LOVE my old brushes!

(I hope I’m not reposting this! It doesn’t seem to be posting???)

There is so much useful information. I just seen a video on watercolor brushes. I purchased the cheapest ones, and I am not happy with them, so I decided to try one of the more expensive types. I wanted to get the Koi brand because it can be made smaller with the cap at the end for travel. I’ve been wanting to go down to the marina to do some sketching and painting. I’m in the process of making a travel watercolor set to take with me.

Before watching your videos I had the Koi and the Windsor and Newton watercolor paints that had been sitting for several months untouched for fear of using them, I had done acrylic painting awhile now (almost a year now and still learning so much) I also have a set of new Oil paints bought for me as an early birthday gift (my birthday is coming up on 12-12) that have never been touched yet……I have dabbled in the water color now due to inspiration from you and if I was to win I would definitely love to have the Fabart 15 Piece Interchangeable Artist Paint Brushes for Watercolor, Acrylics and Oils, because they are something I’ve wanted for a while now but simply can’t afford being a single parent now since September. The interchangeable heads are something so neat in my eyes alone but it’s got brushes I’ve been dying to try such as the dagger and the deerfoot stippler among others that I’ve been dying to try. Thank you so much for your insightful and awesome videos they really have helped me come out of my shell and feel more comfortable slowly with getting into watercolors because before your videos I was too afraid to even open the water colors and use them but your videos helped me step out of my fear zone and I’m slowly getting more and more comfortable with watercolors! I sincerely want to thank you so much for this chance to win and I look forward to each and every video you post, I literally wake up every day hoping there’s a video notification on the top of my phone LOL
