Let’s Paint a Ceramic Tree!

My DIY Ceramic Christmas Tree came smooth and ready to paint. Carefully unpack the tree and set aside the lamp part and the plastic bulbs. Protect your work surface with newspaper or a drop cloth. Gather your supplies. You will need:

  • DIY Christmas Tree
  • Acrylic paint (I used Turner Acryl Gouache in Red, Green, Gold, Pearl Green, Pearl White and Green Lame’)
  • Paint brushes: 1″ flats for base coating, 2″ hog fans for dry brushing & 1/2″ hog for accenting with the glittery lame’ paint.
  • Bucket of water for cleaning brushes and a rag for wiping them dry.
  • Glue: Beacon 3-in-1

tree_step1

Step 1. Paint the base of the tree bright red and the tree dark green.

tree_step2

I recommend setting the painted ceramics on a piece of waxed paper to dry so they don’t stick.

Step 2. Use a clean fan brush to swipe gold paint on the red base, it will give it a festive, yet rustic look. Use a clean dry fan brush to dry-brush the pearl green paint on the tree branches. Don’t cover it completely, you want some of the darker green to show in the creases and shadows.

tree_step3

Step 3.  Repeat the dry-brushing on the tree branches with pearl white paint but do not cover all of the pearl green, you are applying less paint. Think of adding a bit of frost or snow to the tips of the evergreen boughs.

Step 4. Once the tree and base are dry insert the bulb into the tree base using the attached clip and place the green tree on top. I decided to glue the lightbulbs in on mine because I was afraid of them getting lost but you could also leave them loose and decorate it every year! For the above photo I turned on the tree and turned off the overhead lights, the photo does not do it justice, it is so pretty lit up!

  1. I love it! What a neat give-away Lindsay!

I made one in a ceramics class decades ago and I look forward to unpacking it each Christmas season.

I glued my little light bulb things in the boughs too, but keep the star topper free. I have a blue one and white one I switch up every once in awhile.

This would become a beautiful Christmas treasure in any home I’m sure!
Best of luck to all who enter!

    1. I love the Christmas tree it is beautiful, my idea for a perfect Christmas gift is the ceramic blue/green teal owl. But the knitting yarn bowl is a very close second

  2. One item – tough choice she has so many great items. I love the plate quotes. Mostly I love the idea of her items. We had a very special woman in our life who used to paint ceramics and gave us something every holiday. She passed away about 10 years ago and I always thought I’d preserve the tradition somehow and haven’t.
I think if I had to buy one item for myself, I’d get those beautiful ornaments. Just seems like something she would have given us.

  3. WOW- Creativity Happens has a fantastic store! There were so many great gifts to choose from but the ornaments really caught my eye and everyone can use a NEW ornaments for their tree!

  4. I love the yarn bowls..crochet of course not knit lol. I really like the yarn dish that’s a cat dish with the feet. And I really love the tree like mugs. I may just snag one of them now! But the trees are my favorite. I still have one that I was given when I was little. I’m missing a few lights but I put it up every year. I’d say it’s probably about 30 years old now.

  5. PS- Forgot to say I would LOVE to win the tree–THANKS for the chance! Our home doesn’t allow for a large tree so the tabletop one would be so nice!!!

  6. I think the Christmas ornaments would be Great I have an idea : place them in a bowl of a hurricane lamp glass would look wonderful on the table with a few sprigs of pine branch under them and some lights arranged around them that are battery operated( the lights are battery operated. Would really show them off during daylight and evening hours.
They tree could be painted with some white on the tips and displayed on a mantle with small packages around the base for a festive look. And of course Red for the base with maybe a few white stars painted to make it look like a Christmas skirt.

  9. I love the trees and they would be so much fun to decorate. PLUS, don’t laugh – I learned what the yarn bowl was. I got one at a yard sale and thought it was for plants……..go figure.

  10. Girl, if this doesn’t take me back to the 80’s this rocks! What a score Lindsay. I would say if your person knits or crochets, def the DIY bowl with the holes to finish how you like it. If the person doesn’t do the painting, what a fun thing to individualize yourself first. I love it all, the doggie bowl, and the teachers mugs wow

  12. There was a lot to choose from, Lindsay! But the first thing that caught my eye were the beautiful tree ornaments, followed by the knitting bowls (and no, I don’t knit). My step mother had a table top Christmas tree that looked like the one you made! But I think she bought it, it wasn’t a kit.

  20. Love her mugs, the ceramic ornaments, stoneware and the yarn bowls are AMAZING!!!
My Meme used to have one of these ceramic Christmas trees and we knew it was almost time for Santa to come when she put it out. We lost her 2 years ago to Cancer. It was quite sudden from diagnosis to the end so I really haven’t been able to process it all even now. The only thing of hers that I requested was her Ceramic Christmas tree but supposedly it got broke when they took it out of the box. I was heartbroken then and it just doesn’t seem like Christmas without that tree. I would love to win this so that I can make memories like that with MY grandchildren.
Thank you for the chance to have a little piece of my grandmother with me again! I know it won’t be hers but it would represent her and the lovely memories of Christmas’ past.

I went to her shop and looked at her stuff & Whoa! What great stuff she makes!!! And the best thing is she is right here in the state I live in! What a great excuse to take a road trip to the beach!! I love her Christmas Ornaments and the Trees but my favorite piece is the small plate with the inscription thanking God for Coffee and Wine. You have to read it, It’s hilarious!!! Her pie plate to bake pies is amazing!!! She says it will actually take less time to bake a pie in her dish than in a glass pan! I’m just blown away. Come Friday, we’re going Christmas shopping there for sure!!! TFS Lindsay, you rock!!
    Big Hugs!!

It gives of enough “candle light” to get things done and everybody looks better in the mirror by candle light??? If she does not already have a tree in the powder room, she needs this one! ohhhh, the yarn bowl is adorable for me. (hit the save button…I’m a bad elf)

Hmm, love the serving pieces-platters bowls, and the Christmas ornaments are amazing! But I really want one of those trees. A friend made me one years ago and I managed to drop it out of its protective bubble wrap as I was putting it in its box at the end of the Christmas season. I was heartbroken. I didn’t know you could still get them! Thanks for all your lovely ideas.

  49. I neglected to ask – is it OK to use acrylic paints on the tree? I will be moving in December so an actual full-sized tree will not happen. A table-top tree that evokes sweet memories every year would be a treat. But of course time is an issue this year. I do not want to apply a paint that would need to be removed.
