My Thoughts on Reviews {…and a review…}

Hi friends! I want to start off tonight voicing an opinion (that’s what the internet is for right? LOL!) I have had a few people complain about the fact that I, The Frugal Crafter, review products. I totally understand why it would rub some people the wrong way if they are coming to my blog for thrifty ideas and a review makes them want to spend. That is not my intention. I get requests on a daily basis from viewers to review products, literally hundreds of requests a year, because they want to know if a product is worth buying before they spend their hard-earned money on it. That is why I review products. That and I am honestly curious about how they perform and compare. I also realize that my audience is all over the globe and a product that is affordable and easy to find one place may be impossible to get somewhere else. I live in the USA so it is fairly easy for me to obtain products. Maybe you can’t get M Graham watercolors so you want to know if Winsor & Newton is as good or maybe a new brand came out and is on sale so you want to know if it is decent. This is why I do reviews. Sometimes I buy the product and other times I am given a sample from a company. I ALWAYS let you know if I am given a product for free so you can factor that in your judgement on how much or little weight to give my review (although you will always get my honest opinion.) And I do not take payment for reviewing a product however I may use an affiliate link if a company I am affiliated with sells it. Again, I make that obvious too. I appreciate when other artists review products especially if it is someone who works in a  similar style because I can get an idea of how useful a supply would or would not be for me. I never want you to think that you need to go buy anything I give a positive review on, rather I want the reviews to be there in case you are considering a purchase that you can compare items and see if it is something you really need or not. It is also helpful to know if two products are indistinguishable from one another so you don’t buy duplicates. You might not agree with my reviews but you will always get my honest opinion. One piece of advise I will give anyone whether you are a marker artist, watercolors or pencil artist is to try a couple of tubes, pencils or markers from each brand (get different colors though so it is not a waste!) and see what works best for you before going “whole hog” on a set. That’s my opinion and as always I welcome yours:)

missionpanst

Now on to the review of Mijello Mission Gold Class (Professional) and Mijello Mission Silver Class (Student) pan watercolor sets. These sets were sent to me by Amazon seller Crush On because they appreciated the review I did on the Mission Gold 24 pure pigment tube set that I purchased last month. I have not seen the silver class (student line) used and I think in some countries it is vastly cheaper than the professional line so I am reviewing it.

Here are the sets I reviewed:
Mission Gold Perfect Pan 24 Set:
Price: $108 on Amazon (retail $189)
24 colors equivalent to 5-6ml tube paint per pan
Packaged in a gold bulletproof glass palette (it is really a type of plastic)
Artist Quality

Mijello Silver Class pan watercolors:
Price $68 (could not find a regular retail price)
20 pans each with the equivalent of 12ml tube paint per pan
Comes in a large palette with plenty of mixing room, also keep the clear plastic packaging as it can be flipped over and serves as divided mixing areas.

I have to say I am impressed with the Mijello Mission Silver Class paint, just be aware that some of the colors are not as lightfast as the artists grade (perhaps due to fillers?) but they mix cleanly and seem as pigmented as their artists counterparts.

In all honestly tho, I would consider the pure pigment set by Mijello gold class because I believe all of the colors can be made from those artist grade pigments. I personally purchased these a couple of weeks ago and love them! They are also cheaper than the Mission gold perfect pans and you get more paint.

And I don’t have this set but many of my viewers have said they love it, the Mission Gold set of 36 with palette, it is cheaper than the silver class paint set but you actually get the equivalent of 80 ml less paint, on the other hand artist quality paint theoretically will go farther.

Like I said I was given these two palettes as a gift from the Amazon seller Crush On from whom I purchased my pure pigment set. The mission gold paints were one of the most requested products to review and I am glad I could able to show you a couple more options. I hope you found this review helpful! If there is a product you would like reviewed let me know in the comments. I base my reviews on most requested items. Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

  1. I love your reviews and they have helped me make many decisions on what to purchase and what to wait on in hopes of something that fits my needs more comes out. The ones who don’t like reviews must have unlimited budgets to spend and so they can get whatever they desire without worrying about costs. I am not in that group so I thank you for your honest and fun reviews!

  3. What?! I can’t understand people who don’t like helpers. Lindsay, you offer us a HUUUGE valuable service by your wonderful reviews. I have come to think “what does The Frugal Crafter think about X product?”. I purchase very little without looking into reviews first. Nowadays, there is a lot of junk on the market, and I am continually amazed by all the good-hearted people who take the time to write honest reviews about products. I hate to go back to the days without them!
PS Plus I love the whole idea of “frugal crafting” and the inspiration you give us!

  4. It is sad when people have to complain when all you are trying to do is make them better artists and provide information about different art products and paints. Just keep doing what you’re doing. I am learning so much from you this year I have always wanted to watercolor and now that I’m retired I have the time to put into it

It’s exciting to see new products and what you can do with them whether or not I can afford them – that’s what Amazon wish list are for, isn’t it?! Also, have really enjoyed your recent plein air painting videos. Make me want to get out there and try for myself 😃

  6. We have become an overly sensitive, whiny, complaining ” collective voice” over the Internet. I think that because you are giving your own time, and professional OPINION then people can take it for what it’s worth or move on. Get over yourselves, People! Sorry…the news has gotten to me.. I can’t afford half of what you review, but I think it’s good to have it out there. I trust your opinion. And you are the queen of disclaimers, so just just keep on keeping on, Lindsay!

  8. Keep doing the reviews please – they help me know what’s worth purchasing or not. For those who don’t want to buy, they don’t have to watch review videos if they’re not interested. Kind of like, if you don’t want to watch TV switch it off…Keep up the good work and don’t worry about the naysayers!

  11. What I deeply appreciate about your reviews is that I can trust them. It is true that, a couple times, a review has sent me on a happy shopping spree (peg stamps!).

Your reviews have helped me learn the advantages & disadvantages of spending $$ on, for example, an artist’s grade watercolor set. As a casual painter, student-grade paints fit my needs and my budget. When I saw your post about the sweet deal for the Turner set, I jumped on it. That’s the power of reviews combined with great tutorials.

I believe it was your site, that I seen the misti for the first time.

I was trying to get the ‘free’ download of the grid.

    Is that still available?

If so, would you be so kind to send it to me.

This misti looks so good compared to the stamp a ma jig.

I also look at reviews to tell me what I don’t want. Distress Crayons are not on my wish list.

I love the look of brushos and they have been on my wish list. I finally sat and talked to myself and I have decided I want 2 reds instead of the set of 24. I wouldn’t have heard of brusho if it wasn’t for Youtube reviews and videos.

I have also bought lyra watercolor crayons, reeves watercolor pencils, and shopped at Lost Coast Design based on your reccomendation. I have also bought the Canson mixed media xl pad, and some of the other sizes as well.

Being frugal doesn’t mean being cheap. I would rather buy 1 good product than waste 5 cheap ones.

  20. Hi Lindsey,
    This is what I think:
I feel incredibly fortunate to have found your YouTube channel with all the FREE watercolor as well as other tutorials you offer. (did I mention FREE?!) Keep doing exactly whatever it takes for you to be happy in what you do in YOUR life. If reviewing products makes you and your viewers happy then by all means do it! It’s just like with TV. If I don’t want to watch what’s on, I change to a different program (or episode as it were). How selfish of some people to complain that you’re doing something that someone out there really appreciates. Because of you i feel empowered to courageously persue my hobby with what I can afford to persue it with including my Newton/Winsor/Cotman–even though they’re only student grade!! I own a Koi watercolor travel set as well as Prima Watercolor Confections and love them all. Thank you, Lindsey, for all you do and for sharing your talent with us.

I’ve lost track of the times I’ve heard you say “use what you have”. People who go immediately and buy something just because they saw you review it and not because they need it or just would like to have it ….. well, bottom line is, that’s their problem, not yours. I think they forget “The Frugal Crafter” is a job and you work DARN hard at it and you work DARN hard attempting to give people what they want as far as content goes. I work at a chocolate factory and get to eat all the chocolate I want, you work in the craft industry and get free craft supplies, most people get some perks from their job. I have specifically searched your site numerous times for various products or techniques and you invariably have what I want to know. I truly hope you never let the few naysayers change either your content or you! 34. First I will answer you regarding reviews but I have a second question that I would like your input on. I like the reviews. They are helpful. I am not able to afford lots of things to try out just for the sake of trying. I want to KNOW it works and is worth the money.
My question to you is this — although Yupo paper would probably be preferable, would glossy paper/cardstock work well enough? I am not a professional and the people I send cards to pretty much don’t know anything except that I made it. They haven’t much clue as to how much time, money or effort goes into it. But for myself, I would like to use the alcohol inks and get similar results to what I have seen in various blogs with the YUPO. I have quite a lot of glossy already and don’t want to spent the money on Yupo if glossy would give me similar results.
Thanks so much. Your advice is appreciated.

  36. There is a big difference between being frugal and being cheap. Being frugal means spending your money carefully. Sometimes spending a little more will save you in the long run.

You provide an invaluable service by reviewing products from the whole range of prices. You have always been clear about your sponsored content and if you were given a product. You never hesitate to give your opinion of a product, even when you are less than impressed. Also, no matter what you are reviewing, you always remind us to “use what you have”.

I love your reviews. You give a lot of information about why a product might be better or worse than another. I learn a lot about art supplies and how they work by watching your reviews, and you sometimes include a quick painting perfect for a beginner like myself.

    Don’t ever change!

  39. Lindsay, I love your reviews! I bought my Mimic brushes thanks to your review along with the Turner paints because of your review. The brushes, I absolutely love. The paint, however, not so much but I have only tried them once. I like my Yarka, White Knights paints much better. The Turners were on sale, I was buying the brushes anyway and shipping was the same either way so I took a chance. But heck, a review is just one person’s opinion. It is up to us if we chose to buy the product or not and bottom line, we can chose to watch your review or not, it is just that easy. I, for one, really appreciate the time and effort you put into the videos to help us wade through all the products out there and if you get some “free stuff” for your trouble, good for you!

    Anyway, please keep reviewing.

  40. Lindsay, I have been watching your reviews and tutorials on your weblog for several months now. I stumbled upon your site while searching for watercolor painting tutorials. And while my preference is for the watercolor reviews and lessons, I watch all your videos about other products and crafts because they are informative and educational and frankly, enjoyable to watch. I have branched out and utilized some of the stamping and other techniques in mixed media projects that I would have never tried without your videos inspiring me.

My favorites are the live stream Friday painting tutorials which due to my work schedule, I look forward to watching over the weekend.

As this is an income stream for you and you are open about compensation through affiliate programs and sponsorships, I can’t imagine how anyone can complain. You provide a service to all your viewers and anyone who takes issue with any reviews, sponsorships, project choices etc can opt not to watch.

I am happy to have found your site and grateful for the information you provide. Thanks for all you do!

I know I’ll never be a professional artist, my art will never hang in an art gallery, and that’s okay with me. My art is for my own love of creating. I have no illusions of grandeur, hence no worries if my paintings won’t last a hundred years….lol . I do have paintings I did as a child, and they were done with an eight color tin set of Prang watercolors. They are in an old scrapbook, and are as vivid as they were when I painted them. I’m always a lot more informed after I listen than before.)Then I try or don’t try, those products I care about based on two things. 1) What you say and 2) What you show us as you demo and review. That way we can see without the expense of personal experimentation, if this is something we really want to try or not. And I try to tell you about those I have tried. Sharing experience is what art is all about………….I have saved a lot of heartache and money simply by watching product reviews. We all have. So, raspberries to those who complain. It should be a loud thank you to you from each of us. So, THANK YOU!

  57. I love that you review products. I love your online teaching….don’t change! Unfortunately there are a lot of trolls on the Internet. If a person doesn’t have the ability to not spend that is their issue. I am greatful for the companies that ask you for a review because it gives us a chance to learn from you! You always give options, and say really use what you have on hand.

  58. Lindsay, I enjoy watching all your tutorials even though I primarily watch for the watercolor lessons and reviews. You are up front about your sponsorships and affiliate status, all of which help support your free online posts, and honest in your assessments.

Your attitude and approach to painting was the nudge I needed to try watercolor again (used them as a child) and focus on the enjoyment of the process. Please keep those watercolor tutorials coming and know that you are encouraging a whole group of folks to get out there and create regardless of their medium of choice! Thanks for all you do.

  59. I love that you do reviews. Even if I can’t afford to buy a product, I still like the reviews to see if I can find something cheaper or make it myself. Keep on keeping on. You’re doing a fabulous job and really enjoy you and your blog!!!

  61. Dear sweet Lindsay, I love your site, reviews, lessons, ideas, everything even if they don’t apply to me. I am retired and love the painting and reviews and am fortunate enough to be able to buy supplies that I see and appeal to me. I don’t have children or grandchildren and therefore am not as interested in the children’s crafts BUT I STILL enjoy watching them and understand there are others watching who will enjoy doing them! You can’t be all to all. Everyone should understand that! I depend on your reviews to make decisions, and sometimes to teach me how to use something that has been sitting in my studio unused because I didn’t know how to use it correctly! Thank you for All you do! And keep doing That!

  62. OK, so you do reviews, so you share hauls of products, so you offer stamping cardmaking classes, so you show how to watercolor, etc etc. This is YOUR venue, do whatever YOU want. Geez, how petty are some whiny people! I am not an artist, I just like to make cards, so guess what? It is SIMPLE once click to go past your drawing/painting videos that don’t apply to me, and just as simple to click on a card making video and learn something. My friend IS an artist and has been working on improving her watercolor painting, so SHE watches those videos. And for the record, the reviews are what I read/watch when I have some extra time, and sometimes get a good tip or two from those.
Wish the whiners would just either shut up or go away, and let the rest of us play and learn!

  63. I’m a huge fan of yours and I love the reviews. No I don’t buy a lot of what you might review, but it’s good info to have the info, just in case. I love your watercolor reviews and you always take me in the right direction, and have loved my purchases. True I might not have bought that Tim without the review, but been so much happier to have a product with high quality. I’m happy in the end and that’s all that matters😝 I know you have been watercoloring most of your life so that review counts big time.

My opinion if someone who doesn’t like reviews, just don’t watch it.

I consider that you do a great service for us, I can’t always trust reviews online from Amazon or people I don’t know. So THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!

  64. Personally I think it’s great that so many people are speaking up and “shouting” down the complainers. Unfortunately, we live in a world that caters to the “one” and not to the “many”. I am very happy that you are not listening to those “ones” and continuing to provide us with valuable information. I refer people to your site all the time. I’ve purchased art supplies and tried things that I never would have tried if not for your reviews. I agree with the commenters that said in essence, if you don’t like what is on this site, then don’t watch! And the commenters who said, this is your site, you can do or say whatever you want without fear of offending the “ones”!!! I LOVE this site!

I don’t use watercolors, and don’t do mixed media BUT I love reading all your info and opinions. Keep up the good work (and I can’t believe ALL the Work you put into your show!)

  67. I really like your reviews and your recent reviews of Mission Gold helped me make a decision to purchase the 36 tube set. I am very happy with my purchase. While you review helped me decide, it was not my only consideration. Cost was also a factor as well as having more colors to try out – which for me was a plus. Thanks for your reviews and all the videos you provide at no cost. I am learning a lot.

  68. I appreciate and enjoy your reviews! I’m no artist, but I love coloring and just playing with colors. So I finally decided to try some watercolor painting. I could do that when I was younger! All these years later, the number of products on the market is confusing. Watching your videos, I was able to choose a starter set that’s affordable. I’m glad you recommend and demonstrate products!

  69. Your reviews are very helpful to me as an artist and a consumer. I can’t buy everything, even though at times it looks like I do! When you take the time to give me meaningful information it helps me make good choices about the products that I buy. Thank you so much for all of your hard work!!

  70. I, for one, love your reviews. I never ever listen to others who are always complaining. That being said if you are showing us how to, water color, for example, I just do not watch. Why? Sorry to say I do not do water color. However, if you are doing something I am interested in please, please do review your product, so it would be up to me and me alone to decide if I want to purchase it. I do just love your vids and please continue with them. Now on to stamping, what ever that is. Lol

  75. Lindsay, it has only been a few months now since I luckily found you on the internet and boy, am I ever glad I did! I have learned so much from watching all your reviews and videos. I just purchased the Turner watercolor smaller tube set and I just love the bright colors and quality of the paints – a little goes a long way. I just got a new TV and it’s a Smart TV so now I can watch you on TV on Youtube. Sometimes when I have coffee at 6 in the morning, I’ll put on one of your videos – it’s great! Please, please Lindsay don’t let a few negative remarks affect what you do for the rest of us. The rest of us love you!! Thanks for all you do for us! A big hug from Sharon in Florida.

  76. Hi Lindsay, your blog is so much fun and I often learn something new although I’ve been crafting my whole life and stamping for 18 years!! I cannot understand why people would complain to you when you are doing so much for the art community. If there is a review and someone isn’t interested, then just don’t read/watch it!! It seems simple to me and it’s sad that people are so quick to complain! So, thank you for all you do and share – keep up the great work!!! Hugs to you!

Keep up the good work! Thank you for sharing your time and talent! Hugs!

So, your blog is one place I look. So to me frugal crafter is the perfect name because you give us handy tips and also save us money. Thanks for the great blog Lindsay.

    1. the demo I did on the video with as mijello silver class set of 20 (student grade) but the one in the tumbnail that I showed already done was done with the mijello gold class 24 perfect pan set. I don’t have the 36 set but it is a good deal and everyone I know that has it loves it but I really like the 24 set because it contains recipies in the panphlet for all of the other colors included in the 36 set so I think it is more versitile.

  84. Hi Lindsay, I appreciate and enjoy your reviews on products. First off, as an artist, you’re experienced, and I have confidence in your honest opinion. On some products, even if I have had a different experience, I still like another viewpoint. It’s great getting your “artists perspective”, rather than that of a “card maker” only. Thank you so much, and keep up the good work!

  85. Lindsay, may I speak frankly? Anyone who ever, EVER complains about anything, ANYTHING you do or say needs to be slapped upside the head!!! And I’m being completely serious here. You go out of your way to provide FREE tutorials and advice about everything crafty, and all your fans do is to express our love and appreciation through our comments. Frankly, as my husband would say, butt-hurt whiners need to just hush up and keep their negativity to themselves. I know you’re much nicer and would never say anything like this, but as I’ve gotten older, I’m finding I have zero patience with this sort of thing. There. I said it. LOL. Love you, sweet pea. 😃💖
