40? I Demand a Recount!

Hi friends! I hit the big 4-0 today and things are already going downhill. When I finished up my live class on Friday my throat was scratchy and by the end of the day I was achy, tired and cranky. I spent the weekend under blankets drinking tea and alternating Tylenol and Advil. I have decided that turning 40 is bad for my health and from now on I’m going to be 32 🙂

40

Actually I woke up to lovely presents and a no-bake cookie “cake” from hubby and kids ( love peanut butter no-bakes and I am not crazy about cake as vegan cakes tend to be lackluster) and then my mom and sister stopped by and took us to lunch. My sister gave me a pretty adult coloring book and I remarked at how it will be nice for me to use during my convalescence and she accused me of milking my illness. Pffftt. She just doesn’t understand how long it take people my age to get over a cold. Since I had no voice to shoot videos I spent some idle hours online watching craftsy classes (today is the last day of a big sale if you want to check out some 50% off classes shameless affiliate linkage) and looking at new watercolor paints online. I know, I need more paint like a hole in the head right? I was checking out the brands you guys had been asking me to review and a few sets hopped into my cart. I have not hit “buy” yet so if there were any brands you were curious about let me know and I will see what I can do.

All kidding aside I am very lucky to have lovely friends and family (that I hopefully have not given this crud too) to celebrate this milestone with. I am so grateful to have you here as well so I wanted to let you know why I did not have any new videos up this weekend (if I go a few days I get worried emails LOL:) and if you know of any good remedies to get rid of a sore throat let me know. It is driving me crazy, every time I swallow it feels like razors and I sound like Rudolf when his dad made him cover his red nose with mud. That would make for good video huh? Oh well, I don’t get sick that often so I guess I am due. Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

  3. You could be 29 forever like a lot of ladies are–haha. But then you would have to miss out on all the wisdom that comes with getting older. Embrace it 🙂 I just hit the big 5-0. Other than some gray hairs and wrinkles, it’s not so bad. Sorry you feel ill on your birthday. Happy Birthday and hope you feel better soon!

  4. Happy birthday Lindsay. I turned 60 last month so if you think 40 is bad just wait!! However as a wise person said, ‘its better than the alternative’. Aint that the truth. I love your videos and I am so glad to have found you on You Tube, you make me a better painter – and I’m a real beginner! I hope you feel better soon. Tip for sore throat/cough Cut up two lemons, put in jug and cover with hot water. Put a tablespoon of glycerine and a tablespoon of honey (or more if you have a sweet tooth) and drink it through the day. Keep it in the fridge if you leave it overnight. It really really helps. Get well soon. x

  10. Happy Birthday Missy….trust me when you get to be in the 60 range you will think 40 was still a baby 🙂 Sorry for not feeling well. One thing I learned from a very dear elderly lady from the deep south is to put a slice or two of raw fresh onions on the bottoms of your feet and put nice warm clean socks on and go to bed for 8 to 12 hours. It really works believe it or not. The onion will pull all the infection / toxins causing your throat to hurt out of your body. You will be shocked to see how much black is on those onions when pull your socks off. Also, a nice glass of warm wine with some lemon helps to get you to la-la land. Feel well soon 🙂

Definitely a drag to get sick on your birthday weekend! Go ahead and milk it for all it’s worth – moan and groan. Let your crew wait on you. In addition take advantage of the wonderful antiviral properties of wine! Not certain if it’s a sure cure but with enough you won’t care how you feel.

  33. Happy 40th! I’m sorry to hear you’re been sick, though. Summer colds really suck! My fav remedy is to use a neti pot for the sinuses and then a few drops of peroxide in the ears for a few minutes (until the crackling slows down). I think it held off my last cold but who knows. If that fails, a hot toddy is nice! 🙂 Get well soon…

  34. The best thing I’ve ever found for a sore throat is hot lemon and honey. I love lemons and their juice so I can take it strong, but you can make it to your own taste. I pour some lemon juice in a mug (several tablespoons) and add honey to taste (for me a couple of generous teaspoons) and then add hot water. I love that something that tastes so good (to me) is helping my throat. The lemon juice cleans the throat and the honey heals it. The first time someone made this for me it was my roommate in college and I’ve been using it ever since. I guess that’s a testament to how well it has always worked for me.

Hope you feel better soon. And happy 4-0! My opinion on birthdays is that I can be any age I want to choose! 🙂

If your throat is really bad and you have a fever you might want to go to the doctor to make sure it’s not strep! My favorite remedy is hot as you can stand saltwater gargle. 50. The best natural thing I have come across is to use a lot (3 – 4 large pieces) of candied ginger in boiling water in a teacup. Let it cool off just enough to drink it almost as hot as you can stand it. Use your spoon to keep pressing and pushing the ginger around to get it to steep into the water. If you like ginger you can eat it after you finish the “tea”. I did this around six times in a day, and drank Celestial Seasons Ginger Lemon tea, and it got my voice back in two days. I may have just gotten better, but I LOVE ginger and it was a good excuse to splurge on that much sugar.

  52. so sorry you don’t feel well. Summer colds/viruses are terrible, temperature\wise and wanting/having to stay cool/warm and that battle.
I’m sure you’ve gotten some great remedies. I haven’t read any of the posts.
One we always use (not fun, but so effective) is salt and vinegar gargle. 1 teaspoon salt, 2 tablespoons CIDER vinegar in a small juice glass of warm water, as warm as you can tolerate. Gargle prn. Usually won’t have to gargle more than a couple of times, depending on the virus. Mine usually don’t come back after using this. Strep throat, I’m not so sure, haven’t had that to try it on, but the common cold is usually benefitted much by it. In fact, we have a friend who would not use this for a couple of years, didn’t believe it would help. Then got desperate and tried it and can’t believe how effective it was. Have more stories, but that’s good for now.
Hope it helps. If so, put it in your recipe file box for future use.

I used to get those sore throats where I felt like I had swallowed broken glass. They became so bad, so long, and so frequent, that I had my tonsils out at age 35. It was the best thing, as I hardly ever got sick after that. I am not a fan of surgery, but it was worth it (we did have insurance that helped a lot).Hope some of the remedies above will work for you. t is a bummer to get sick…especially on Christmas or your birthday.

  68. Happy Birthday Lindsay! Maybe you should celebrate your birthday over again after you get well so this bad experience fades. My 59th birthday is soon and I can tell you age means nothing, it’s Health that matters. Getting older would be a party if we’d all stay healthy.

When I had a bad throat ache my doctor prescribed codeine against the cough that was wearing me out night and day but also advised me to inhale a lot. You know, pouring boiling water over a heaped tablespoon of salt, hanging your head over the bowl and covering it all up with a towel. I did that a couple of times per day for ten minutes and that helped a lot plus my skin looked like I was 10 years younger which I didn’t mind either.

Actually, I did miss your videos but I assumed you were hanging out at the beach! I’m so sorry it turned out you were feeling so bad. It’s hard for active people to just rest on the sofa doing NOTHING! Were you able to have fun with the adult coloring book? It was as horrible as it sounds. love love love your videos, I just started doing watercolour, at age 62 because of your teachings. I think my favorite part is when you say “don’t worry, it’s just paper, nobody has to see it, cuz it’s your painting.” It gave me permission to be creative, without being perfect. Thank you for that,as I have a passion for painting now.

  86. If you are receptive to “Health” tips, drop the tylenol. It is NOT good for anyone. You are ONLY 40? You are still YOUNG and vital. Want a GREAT Health tip? (I do NOT benefit financially from this tip.)Go online to Puritan’s Pride.com and purchase Serrapeptase made by Source Naturals. It will help with lowering High Blood Pressure if you have it. It also helps arthritis. I would also recommend Hyaluronic Acid 100 mg. These both are capsules. The Hyaluronic Acid is an overall body benefit. It helps replenish the fluid in the pockets of joints, and has numerous other benefits that taking a capsule can do. It helps keep the skin supple as we age to help avoid the age wrinkles. I have been taking this for 3 years. It works.

Happy Life and HAPPY BIRTHDAY. “Life is What You Make It.”

  89. So sorry you aren’t feeling well. I take Boiron products (look up by symptoms). They are inexpensive and very effective. I’ve used Cold Calm for colds, oscillococcinum for flu (really works fast). I looked up sore throat and hoarseness and Roxalia tablets are recommended. Homeopathic, so no bad side effects. If you can’t find in pharmacy section of store, order online, which is usually less expensive. I am not affiliated with Boiron, just a happy customer.

  91. Hi Lindsey,

Sorry about your sore throat! And super sorry it feels like razors. What you’re describing sounds like Strep throat, which we give antibiotics for. Please see your healthcare provider! I’m not normally one to run in for every little thing (us RNs are notorious for ignore symptoms), but, if you’re still feeling like you have a throat of razors or ground class… go in and get it checked for step!

Ok?! Love your videos– thanks for putting a smile on my face so often!

  92. Hi Lindsey…

Just wanted to wish you another Happy Birthday! And 40? Shoot, I’m not even sure I remember that! I do NOT like the 10 year birthdays…since 30 something always happens and it’s all been getting worse…nope, haven’t been enjoying those.

Hope you will be feeling better eventually…colds are such a bummer when one has things to do! They just seem to need to run the course but I do like the honey, fresh/candied ginger, green tea hot drinks when I’m sick.

So this past Saturday, I went to the Rubber Stamp Convention in Carson, CA…my first and it was really fun looking at things and doing lots of talking. Rubbernecker was there and they were fully familiar with you (owner’s son and brother worked it) as were some employees of JudiKins…seems you have gotten around! Ha! There is another one in November and I will block days off for both days…I need more time to chat.

Get well soon…we can’t go too long without new videos. Hey maybe you could just do one with subtitles and hand motions! 😉

  100. Hope you feel better soon – about once a decade I’m ill on my birthday – so hard having to be upbeat for others when you feel like hell and want to go back to to bed! I booked today (Monday) off work to get some painting done and ended up being sick also (my disability flaring up and not really then able to control my temperature or blood pressure), eventually got out of bed at 1900h but feel miles better already. It usually passes in a day or so.

As for 40 – you’re a few years ahead of me but you know, every passing year I seem to enjoy aging more – I feel much more in tune with myself if that makes sense?

  102. Hi Lindsay. Happy birthday!!!! Sorry you are under the weather. The way you get around going up in years with numbers is this. Pick a favorite number and then you have 2 different ways to go. My number is 39. So I tell everyone that 39 has been the best 18 years of my life or I tell people that I am 39 years old with 18 years of experience. It works every time!!! hahaha Pick one or both and enjoy!!!! hugs, patty

Just had to throw in a quick mental image I had when I read that you received an adult coloring book… yeah, for some reason, for just a second, my head read that in a naughty way. LOL! Can you imagine if they made them though?!? Well, that would be one way to get more men to color and show their artistic sides. Ha! 😀 Hope you’re feeling back to normal real soon!

  109. Hi Miss Lindsay. I’m so sorry that I missed your birthday but am glad you are feeling better. My daughter turned 40 on July 4th, but is insisting she is just 35. She forgets that I was there when she was born and that she is a bicentennial baby. Always thought she was good in math. At 62, I can only tell you it just gets better and better! I’m retired and having SO MUCH FUN! Thank you for all the years of instructional videos. You are great company and I enjoy your energy and ideas so much. Happy birthday! Embrace your age…it beats the alternative!
