Our Heartbreaking Weekend

Hi friends, we had a very tough weekend. Our beloved dog Hazel passed away. She was the perfect dog, she spent almost every minute of her day by my side so it broke my heart when my vet told us Friday that she only had a couple of days to live. We had taken her to the vet the week before because she was tired and suddenly did not want to eat, they did blood-work and an exam and they thought she had a cold/flu or had eaten something strange that had been hidden in the show like an old rodent (snow melt sickness is common in dogs I guess) but when she did not respond to the antibiotics and other medications they put her on I brought her back in and they re-did the blood tests that a week before were in the normal range and her levels were off the charts. We had x-rays and ultrasounds (cancer) and the only humane option was to have her put to sleep. We brought her home, with some steroids that would buy us a couple of days and made the most of the time we had. She got to have 4 good days, she declined a bit each day and today I knew it was the last good day and my sweet girl only deserved good days. Here is a photo from her woods walk Saturday, she spent the weekend with family and friends, yesterday was a snow day so the kids got an extra full day with her and she spent today with me trying not to be a blubbery mess because I did not want to burden her more. She was such a good dog.

My heart goes out to anyone who has lost a pet, Hazel was a member of our family. I am sad, heartbroken and shocked but at least we got 4 good days. Give your animals a hug for us and take care of each other.

  1. Such a good Furry Mama – to make such a hard choice and give her that final gift.

I had to put down my cat “Baby” (short for “Baby what’s the matter” and “Baby where’d you go”) It was bar none the most emotionally painful experience of my life, and knowing I was doing right by her was not as much comfort as I had hoped.

You have absolutely done the right thing, bless you!!!!!

    1. thank you, I went through the denial and acceptance stage all weekend, when she was perked up from the steriroids I kept thinking “what if the vets are wrong?” I got a second opinion then I’d see her weak and think am I waiting too long. It just stinks to make that choice which really isn’t much of one. I appreciate your kinds words, it gives me comfort.

I always get another dog although I say I never will. I have 3 now that I enjoy, but my oldest is 14 and I know I will soon have to face this again.

  9. Lindsay, I’m so, so sorry for your loss! I’ve lost 2 dogs in my life time, they were like my children, and it’s just heartbreaking. I wondered if she was ill when I saw the “live” art rerun Friday evening, since there didn’t seem like much else it could be. Cuddle with your family and do all you can to comfort yourselves and each other. You’ll be in my thoughts.

Had to put down my best bud (at the time he was a seventeen year young cat) it was the hardest thing I ever had to do, but like you, I let him and his sister the year before, die at home where they were with those who lived them. I’ll add you and your family to my prayers tonight.

  20. A month ago a friend had to make the same decision. On the day she told me about it, I had received a catalog in the mail and in the catalog was a plaque with this on it:

    It came to me
    that every time
    I lose a dog
    they take a piece
    of my heart with them,
    and every new dog
    who comes into my life
    gifts me with a piece
    of their heart.
    If I live long enough
    all the components
    of my heart
    will be dog, and
    I will become
    as generous and
    loving as they are.

  81. I am so sorry. Prayers for you and your family. This poem helped some when we had to choose to let our 14 year old Bichon, Maggie, put to sleep. I hope you find some comfort from it.

If it should be that I grow weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then you must do what must be done,
For this last battle cannot be won.

You will be sad, I understand.
Don’t let your grief then stay your hand.
For this day, more than all the rest,
Your love for me must stand the test.

We’ve had so many happy years.
What is to come can hold no fears.
    You’d not want me to suffer so;
The time has come — please let me go.

Take me where my need they’ll tend,
And please stay with me till the end.
Hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time that you will see
The kindness that you did for me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I’ve been saved.

Please do not grieve — it must be you
Who had this painful thing to do.
    We’ve been so close, we two, these years;
Don’t let your heart hold back its tears.

I can close my eyes and see them, feel them, smell them and hear them. We had never lost a pet to cancer it was always old age over 16 yrs old, but two to cancer within a month of each other was heartbreaking . Casey was a big goof ball, he was a feral pup no human contact for the first 4 months so we fostered him and ended up adopting. He really didn’t know how to run, so he looked like my little pony when he trotted along. He couldn’t jump either so he looked like a toddler climbing onto furniture. He was just a big goofball with big ears. Gidgit was a little brindle pit-bull, mischievous loved all things and sleeping under the blankets in the winter. She always leaned on you or had to be touching you somehow. If she was in trouble and you said her name, she would turn her head away and pretend she didn’t hear you, then hang her head down like what ever she had done wasn’t her fault. Gidgit and Casey were best friends and died that way.  I’m sure that Hazel is romping with them now, with big healthy bodies and Huge sloppy dog smiles.  Looking for those squirrels in the woods .With compassionate healing to you and your family Sandi

  85. Oh Lindsay, I’m so sorry. My heart just breaks for you as I’ve just recently gone through the same pain you’re going through. I know there is nothing I can say that can comfort you and I know that it may take some time before you’re ready to read comments (I know it did for me) but I hope that when you’re ready and you see this that you know there is some one out here who knows and understands your pain. I can assure you though, there is nothing like a new puppy to help the tears stop flowing. Our new little guy is a monster and will NEVER be as amazing as my Best Boy but he sure keeps me on me toes and he has a huge heart full of love (and a mouth full of puppy teeth) to share. Big hugs and lots of love to you my friend.

Our hearts are hurting, but they don’t realize we aren’t right there with them. I know my precious pets are waiting for me in heaven, and I will see them again. 100. Lindsay, I am so very sorry for your loss! My heart goes out to you and your family! I have been there and know exactly how you are feeling! My little dog that I had in our family for 20 yrs; Maybell passed away about 2yrs ago now and it was so hard on me! I raised her from a puppy and she was always by my side.. through good times and the bad! I watched her go blind and def and still keep on going but then she ended up getting very sick and I knew her time was ending! She too would not eat but befor I could get her to a vet she went to sleep that night and never woke back up! It was hard for me but I was glad that it happened the way it did so that I did not have to put her to sleep! I was tired of some people telling me that I should put her down b/c she was so old and I just was not going to do that till I saw start to suffer! Thank God that day never came for me and she went peacefully in her sleep at home! My daughter got me another little dog; Ella is her name and she is 7 yrs old. We adopted her from a lady that needed to find a good home! I still miss my Maybell but I love my Ella and she has warmed my heart and sticks by my side every minute.. She is my spoiled baby! She helped get me out of a depression I started to sink into from loosing my Maybell! So yes I know all to well what you and your family are going through and feeling at this time! May god bless you and help you and your family heal your hearts. With loving thoughts and prayers out to you all! Hugs, Tammy 🙂

It is so sad to have to make that decision but such a gift to be able to free them of the pain. I just wish we humans could make the same decision under the same circumstances. You will see her, pain free, one day, waiting for you to play with her and she is waiting for you, you know as all our pets are.

  102. I’m so sorry to hear this hun. It broke my heart when my first real dog ever, also my bff passed away a few years ago. It was so painful. When I got her cremated, the guy gave me her ashes along with a beautiful framed poem attached. I will share it with you as well.

“Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together…”

    Much love xoxo

  103. I am so very sorry for your loss. Some people don’t understand how people like you and I can become so attached to a ‘dog’. But they are not just a ‘dog’ they are our four legged children who depend upon us for nourishment, nurturing, love, and guidance. They love us unconditional as we do them and we hurt when they hurt. I do know what it’s like to loose your four legged child (we have lost 6 fur babies. One we lost due to leukemia (8 weeks old), two to heart failure, one to heart warms [which devastated us] and two to age). We have two now that are getting up in age but they run the show.
Take whatever time you need to grieve the lost of your “Special” baby for we will be here when you get back. Your family needs you as well as you need them.
You now have an Angel with you all the time named Hazel whom will still be constantly watching over you all. Rest In Peace Hazel as I will be praying for your family!

Eventually after a couple of years (hubby swore he’d never have another dog cos he didn’t want to go through all that grief again!) we got a little puppy again. You really miss having a dog around and we were missing the exercise. Our gorgeous boy is now three and has totally claimed our hearts and we will enjoy, hopefully, a good long time with him. Your dog didn’t have just 4 good days, she had a lifetime of good days and just a few bad days toward the end, she was loved and thats what matters. Sending hugs. xx

Hazel was so lucky to grow up in a loving, safe , joyous home, and I’m sure she will always be with you. Grief takes a while so give all of you plenty of time. She was born with bad hips and towards the end she couldn’t walk much, fell down the steps a few times. What was so hard for me was that she wasn’t sick. Kinda like trashing your car because it had a flat tire. If she was a smaller dog we could have managed it but at 130 pounds, she was just too big. She was my constant companion, my friend and protector. We had been through a lot together. The house just isn’t the same without her. my heart goes out to you at the loss of your beloved pet. The become so much more to us than ‘just a dog’ as i have heard some people say. They touch our lives and our hearts. RIP Hazel. Hopefully you and Ripley are playing like puppies together.

Just be extra careful with each other and give yourself time. It is the only thing that heals. Our pets are members of our families, and we miss them the same we would a child or parent.

  188. With tears in my eye I write this….I have been “mom” to some of the best dogs ever. With that honor comes the responsibility of seeing they live a “dogs” life, nothing but the best! I have had to make what seemed to be the incredibly impossible decision of ending their pain and giving them eternal rest/play! Recently I’ve supported my son in law and my son put both of their elderly Labs down due to cancer. In doing so, I have realized it is actually “easier” (if I dare use that word) to put them to “eternal play” than it is to selfishly live with them in pain.
I am so sorry for the void Hazel has left in your heart. Praying her memories can fill a little bit of it. Hugs from Myrtle Beach, SC.

  193. Lindsay,
Although I only know you through the computer I feel we have been friends for a while. I am so sorry for your loss. My whole family and I are big animal lovers and we have 4 rescues between my grown daughter and me and my hubby. They are our family. We all try not to think about the day that comes all too soon but here you are having to live through it. My heart breaks for you. I lost my little maltipoo 4 years ago to heart failure and I swore to my family that I would never get another dog because I did not want to go through that again. Here I am and since then I have rescued two dogs from certain death. One from the streets of TN and the other off craiglist who would have ended up bait for dog fighters I am sure. Take comfort in knowing that you loved, cared for and gave Hazel a wonderful life. She is most definitely still with you and will be for dime time just not in the form you are used to. Here is a little story that help to let you know you did the right thing Lindsay:

I remember bringing you home. You were so small and cuddly with your tiny paws and soft fur. You bounced around the room with eyes flashing and ears flopping. Once in a while you’d let out a little yelp just to let me know this was your territory. Making a mess of the house and chewing on everything in sight became a passion and when I scolded you, you put your head down and looked at me with those innocent eyes as if to say “I’m sorry, but I’ll do it again as soon as you’re not watching.” As you got older, you protected me by looking out the window and barking at everyone who walked by. When I had a tough day at work, you would be waiting for me with your tail wagging just to say “Welcome home, I missed you.” You never had a bad day and I could always count on you to be there for me. When I sat down to read the paper and watch TV, you would hop on my lap and look for attention. You never asked for anything more than to have me pat your head so you could sleep with your head over my leg. As you got older, you moved more slowly. Then one day, old age took its toll, and you couldn’t stand on those wobbly legs anymore. I knelt down and patted you lying there, trying to make you young again. You just looked up at me as if to say you were old and tired and that after all these years of not asking, you had to ask me to do one last favor. With tears in my eyes, I drove you one last time to the vet. One last time you were lying next to me.
For some strange reason you were able to stand up in the animal hospital–perhaps it was your sense of pride. As the vet gave you the shot you stopped for an instant, turned your head and looked at me as if to say “Thank you for taking care of me.”
I thought, “No, thank you for taking care of me.

Take care Lindsay. Many hugs my cyber friend and fellow crafter.😇

I hope this e-mail reaches you. My family and I are so sorry to hear about your beloved Hazel and what she and you and your family have gone through these last few days. Dogs are such a part of our family and they are a family member that we love so much. Our current boxer dog, Marcus, has degenerative myelopathy and there is no cure for it. Marcus will get progressively worse and we will be faced one day with having to say “good-bye” to him, which will be devastating, but we are thinking of his quality of life and we do not want him to suffer. Our thoughts, hearts and prayers are with you and your family during this very heartbreaking time. We hope the wonderful memories you have of Hazel will give you some comfort during this grieving time. As requested, I will give our Marcus a hug from all of you. Take care.

I have had two dogs that have had to be put down because of cancer and one dog that got Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia from an immunization and passed (probably from a blood clot). I had all of them cremated at the time of their deaths and they reside in their sealed containers on top of my chest of drawers in my bedroom. I have two dogs right now. I have decided that when I die I want to be cremated and my ashes and the ashes from my dogs mixed together and all the ashes will be scattered together so we will always be together.

  215. I’m so very sorry to hear about your sweet Hazel, I had tears in my eyes reading your post. I had to make a similar decision with my cat, that I had had for 16 years, a few years ago and it was the hardest thing I have ever done. She got very sick quite suddenly and we took her to the vet to get checked out. I was so scared because I had a feeling that she might not come back home with me. Turned out she had a tumour in her stomach. She was so weak at this point that trying to put her through surgery would simply have been a cruel and selfish decision on my part, they would have had to keep her at the hospital for a few days just to try and get her strong enough for the anaesthesia, and maybe she could have lived for another year or two. But I could see that she was in pain and even though my heart was breaking I decided that it was time to let her go. She was my darling and my guardian angel and I miss her every day still. It does get easier though.
I found a post on facebook a few weeks after that had me both crying and smiling because it was so beautiful… I have tried to translate it below:

A cats last will and testament.
When humans die they make a last will and testament, where they pass on their home and everything that they have to their near and dear ones.I would like to make such a Will if I could write. I would leave my loving home to a poor, longing and lonely homeless cat. I would like to leave my food bowl, my safe bed, the soft pillows, my toys, the so very loved lap, the gentle caressing hand, the kind voice, yes the whole place that I had in the hearts of my humans. I would like to leave all off this great love, that makes sure that I, when it is time, get to pass away in peace and without pain in the arms of my loving family. When I die, don’t say “I will never have an animal again, it hurts to much when they pass away”
Go look for a lonely sad cat and give her my space. This is my legacy, the love I leave behind, is all that I can give.

I know my sweet cat had a great life and I can tell that Hazel had one to. Hug each other and remember all the good times. The wonderful walks and the best of the snuggles. ❤

  246. I am so sorry for your loss. It is so tough to lose a beloved pet. Especially when it happens that quickly. That has only happened to me once. But when you are expecting the vet to tell you what to do to make her better, and instead he talks about putting her to sleep, it is such a shock to your system. I now never take a day of my pets lives for granted. Hugs to you and your kids. Tough way to learn about life and death.

  250. Lindsay, I am so sorry to hear about poor Hazel. It is a heartbreaking time when a family loses a much loved pet. We have had our share of losses with kitties over the years and know only too well the pain of grief and loss. From my own experience I know that in time, the open wound becomes a scar which you can look at without pain, and you never forget them, but remember them with love and affection and know that they are part of the unique and rich tapestry that makes up your own family. We love them so much and when they leave us we feel the pain so deeply. My love and prayers for you all.

  252. Sorry you lost your dog. I have lost a few dogs and cats. They are truly like family. I still miss everyone of them. My cat I have now is about 5 years old. She will be my last animal. I had a bad heart when I got her due to chemo and didn’t know it or I wouldn’t have gotten her. I am not in heart failure. She is an inside cat so baring something like cancer or some other disease she should live many years, and outlive me. She is my constant companion so that makes me sad for her. She is so attached to me. It is sad either way.

  253. I’maorey for your loss. One year when I was gone from home, my cat was staying with my parents, and she somehow got outside without anyone seeing her(she was an indoor cat only); that night when my dad came home from work, he found her laying by the end of the driveway; we think a car hit her but the vet couldn’t find any marks on her. I am glad I was gone during that time because the only memories I have of her are from when she was alive.

  256. Dear Linsey, My thoughts are with you. I know all too well the loss you felt losing your beloved pet. It happened to me three years ago when I lost my Jeep. He was my friend and companion for 16 years. I had to also take him to the vet when his quality of life had been demolished to a level that he was no longer happy. Give your kids an extra hug and remember the good times.

  259. Lindsay, you have given me so much fun, watching you craft and inspire me to do stuff. My heart goes out to you and your whole family at this time. Our beloved perfect family companion, our Sheltie, Whiskey, was just fine last Thursday morning, boppin’ around. In less than 24 hours, he was gone, having given his all, fighting. He succumbed to a deadly bacteria we didn’t even know he had ingested. I know how devastated you must feel. I am so sorry for your pain.

We lost our Cocker named Shelby many years ago and still miss her. We joke once in a while when returning home and say “We’re home!! It’s time to get out of the chair now!” She would sneak and take a nap in the lounge chair when we were gone. lol-thought we didn’t know 🙂
It took us a long time to grieve and we still miss her even now.
So sorry for your loss. Happy for you and your whole family that you were blessed with such a sweet wonderful gift and all the love she added to your lives.!
I hope you will all be able to help each other remember all the wonderful times you had with her, she will always have a special place in your heart.
Please know there are many friends you have never met that care about your hurt. We are thinking of you and praying for you!

  264. Lindsay and family I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your beloved Hazel. The choice you made for her was a hard one, but the right one. You got 4 great days with her before she passed. My in-laws had a Goldie named Bud that ended up with cancer. They thought it was a fatty tumor so he lived with it for a few months. In the end they had to put him down. It was hard, but he was no longer in pain. Goldie’s are such sweet gentle giants. Think on the great memories you and your family had with her. We love our fur babies so much that it is hard when we lose them. My heart goes out to you and your family.

  269. Our hearts and thoughts are with you. We have had rescue cats for years and as each reaches their end, I cry for days. One year we lost 3! When we had to let go off our 1st (from cancer) I was inconsolable. The vet let me have time with my Tigley. I had everyone in the waiting room sobbing. The vet put her arms around me and said he’s with God now and chasing God’s butterflies in a field of sunshine. No, I didn’t stop crying, but later it gave me a smile thinking about how free and happy he must be. I hope your sweet girl is playing in that sunshine now. God bless!

Let yourself grieve, because you’ll need to. I am praying for you.

  276. Lindsay, I’m so sorry. I read this yesterday and was so tearful for you that I had to wait until today to comment. I know your heart hurts for your little furbaby. I’m glad you and the family were able to surround Hazel before she passed. That is what is important. Family being there for each other at the darkest times. Hugs, gal.

I dread this day for my Punkin. He’s 18 now. He’s got glaucoma and is blind in one eye. He’s on blood pressure meds. He goes through phases where he just looks like he’s so tired. Then when he walks, sometimes he’s crooked stepping. Other times, he might bump into a closed door thinking it’s open. So sad. Then other days like today, he’s running as if he were a kitten. So, we anticipate he will pass shortly. Until then, I just keep reminding myself when he’s meowing into thin air at 3am…how much I love him and will miss him when he’s gone.

    Hang in there!

I don’t know if you know this poem, It always helps me,

    Rainbow Bridge

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together….

  286. Lindsay, so sorry for your loss. Our furbabies are so precious and it hurts so much when we have to let them go. After my last baby crossed the rainbow bridge I had to wait two plus years before I was able to try again and now I don’t know why I waited! I’ve had Laddie two and a half years and we rescued another one 3 months ago and life seems complete! I realise people who don’t have pets wouldn’t understand, but they are our babies! I had to take Laddie to an emergency hospital a week ago and I just lost it thinking I would lose him already. Everything turned out and he’s still with us but I truly understand your sadness. Hugs to you and your family. I love everything you share with us and I missed you and thought something may have happened. It’s amazing how you feel you know someone without ever meeting them! Hugs and prayers.♥♥

Our hearts go out to you and our prayers are for you and your family at this sad time. It hurts terribly. Saying good bye goes against everything in us. Shouldn’t have to. No precious and innocent creature deserves these things. One comfort is that we have the hope of Heaven where there will be no more death or sorrow, and I believe we will see them again.
