Hi friends! This week I got my hands on new Prima watersoluble oil pastels! I wanted to give them a try and see if they are different that what I have on hand already.

I really liked them and found them to be high quality. I also think they would be a welcome addition to your craft room if you did not already own a similar product. Below is a rundown of the products I compared and found to be similar along with price points. Keep in mind that you can find better prices online and with coupons, I did not pay retail for any of these LOL!
I compared the Prima pastels (retails for $20 for set of 24) to:
- Portfolio Water-soluble Oil Pastels (set of 24 retails for $10)
- Faber Castell Gelatos and Gel Sticks (Gelatos set of 15 for $25, sets of 4 for $10, gel sticks set of 12 for $13)
- Lyra Watercolor Crayons (set of 24 retails for $39)
- Caran D’ache Watercolor crayons (set of 30 retail $71)
The Prima water-soluble pastels are beautiful high quality pastels. You can get them on sale for $16.99 at Hallmark Scrapbook (affiliate link)
BUT…
I honestly do not see the need for these if you already have some of these other coloring media. They are good quality and fun to use but not that much different that what we already have. If you do not have any of the similar media they are a good buy. If there is a product you would like to see reviewed let me know in the comments below and I will see what I can do! Hi Lindsay glad you did this review, I was curious. Have you used the Caran d’Ache Supracolor Soft Aquarelle pencils? I would like to know what is so special about them that makes them pricey.

Caran Dache is a pricey brand but high quality, I have a few Supra color and they are nice but I would not say they are revolutionary, they have a pricier pencil called museum as well, they are supposed to be very lightfast and you pay for that. I recommend getting a few open stock pencils and see what you think. I got a good price at merriartist.com

I am one of the ones that does not have any of these products yet but am very interested. I noticed in your project video with the punches, you mentioned that the Prima product seemed to hold the stamped image better when you blended out the color. That is a positive for me. I don’t know much about it, but it seems a lot of people use the gelatos for backgrounds. Do you think these would work similarly for backgrounds? Thanks so much for the great review! i have Reeves and recently worked with them. Have had them for years. They are very inexpensive and I loved the way they blended.

Since these are called “Oil pastels” I’m wondering if they would work in a resist technique? Have you tried this yet? Since they are water soluble, I’m thinking they would totally dissolve when covered with other water-media paints, or is there enough oil to resist some of the layer painted on top. Thanks for all your great videos!

these would not work as resist but regular oil pastels will!

I see that Tim Holtz is putting out Distress Crayons that are “water reactive.” I hope you will review them and tells us what is different about them than these other crayons. Thanks!

I would love to see a review of the Mungyo soft oil pastels. I know zip nada nothing of oil pastels but these are on sale at Jerry’s and I am very intrigued. Would also like a king of oil paste 101 video including everything you would need to use them (paper? canvas? etc.) and how best to use them. thanks Lindsay!

I know this post is old. Jerry’s Artarama had a sale price on the Mungyo water soluble oil pastels, which got me intrigued to buy them, but of course before I make any purchase, I look around for other similar products and do price and quality comparisons. From what I’ve gathered, I believe the Prima Marketing Water Soluble Oil pastels and the Mungyo ones are the exact same, just packaged/marketed differently. They are the exact same size/demensions, they are identical in shape. I looked at the shapes of similar pastels, and non of them were shaped identically but these two brands. They have the exact same color and color names, they are packaged with the colors in the exact same order and they are both made in Korea. I could be wrong of course, but from all the information I’ve gathered, it is very telling to me. Does anybody else have experience with these two brands, that could maybe shed some light on my inclinations? Thank you.
