Hi friends! I have been waiting to share this project and giveaway with you all week.
I love it when I find a really useful high quality tool that is not crazy expensive and I love it even more when I can give some away! I am giving away Pro Hole Punches from Skilled Crafter to 3 lucky viewers! Details to win are at the end of this post!
These punches are serious workhorses and will punch through stacks of paper, chipboard, leather, felt, vinyl, fabric and more. The Skilled Crafter Pro Hole punch makes holes in 6 different sizes and it is really easy to clean out the punch waste. It also comes with 2 replacement punch plates so you know you will have years of reliable use. Today I will show you how I made the simple cardboard covered journal and the leather-bound book with removable signatures similar in style to a very expensive popular journal on the market. For the leather I reused fabric that I had saved from an old coat before it was thrown away. If clothing is not if good enough shape to donate I look to see if there are elements that can be reused. You can also use vinyl, oilcloth or new leather if you like. Watch the video to see how easy it is to make these journals and use this punch!

I would make a watercolor journal for a dear teacher of mine I think, then I would use it for the other holes I need to punch. Sometimes my arthritis makes it hard for me to do too many and a good strong tool would make it easier I think….. heavens, even if I don’t win this one I most likely will go and get one 🙂

For the contest….I think the first thing I’d make is a photo album for my mother so she can have pictures of her 9 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She’s not in the best of health right now and I think something like that would cheer her up.

The first thing I would make is a leather cover for a journal from an old leather jacket that is ripped…one of those very soft thin leather bomber jacket from the 90’s. I just couldn’t dispose of it because the leather is so luscious. (I’m NOT a pack rat…really)

Hi Lindsey, I live in Arkansas, can’t get anymore U.S. than that! I would love to make a few books for my Grandkids. Some with stories written and some for them to draw in or write in. I wonder if the tool could be used to make lacing cards for children. Also, I once saw a bracelet made with the puffy heart stickers. Take two that are the same. punch a hole, glue together(for front and back.), add jump ring and you have a charm. Make several for a cute charm bracelet.

For the contest… I would love to make photo albums for my niece who lost her mom at a very young age and make some for my children to have pictures of her and my mother who I lost while pregnant with my oldest child. I think that it would help to make journals for crafting patterns or ideas.

This is great cuz I can use up those 12 x 12 papers I’ve never used, and sitting there for many years! hahaha… I’m curious about this craft hole punch… is it the same as the ones that you use to make a hole in our belt to make another hole for better fitting?? Two years ago I was trying to make a leather corset type of thing for Halloween, but sewing it was too much for me to do by hand with a huge needle for thick fabric. So I gave up and changed my costume. This tool would have come in handy

I think journals covered with different materials is awesome. I have a quilt thats been handed down many times. It is literally falling apart. My MIL was going to pitch it and I told her NOOOOO I wanted it. It has the most amazing cardinals appliqued on it and I just couldnt see it in the trash. It is literally in pieces. What a great tool to have! I want to make some mini photo memory albums and brag books for my mom and mother in law. Just small enough that they can carry them around in their purse and change out the photos over time. Your tutorial makes it look easy enough for me to do. I’m going to try it with an old leather coat I purchased at the thrift store.

The first thing I would try making is journals that are bounded. I have wanted to try bookbinding but never had the time and this tool would save lots of time. The old asian style bookbinding would be cool to try as well and they make great gifts.

I’d love to make some journals out of my favorite drawing and watercolor papers. And the fact that it punches through such heavy chipboard makes me think there’s a world of other crafting possibilities. Aside from cardboard packaging, I also recycle large drink cans by cutting them into flat sheets for crafting. Hoping this will punch through this relatively soft aluminum without damaging the punch.

I’ve been wanting to make a watercolor journal/sketchbook with removeable signatures so that I can use my favorite watercolor paper in it. Then if a painting turns out to be successful enough that I could frame or give as a gift, no problem! Good professional grade watercolor paper would require a heavy duty punch like this one.

i work at Eufaula area art studio and we teach 4 and 5th graders how to make their own paper, then stencil on it and put it in a binded book they make. we are using needles and cord to bind and it is very hard for them to do. I think this would be a great tool to help them use, and teach them another way to bind their books. I also do crafting for gifts and would like to use this to makeblank page little notebooks for gifts like sunday school and teachers. We have some packing material I want to recycle. It’s thin sturdy chipboard that was molded to fit the corners of a shipping box. My plan was to try several things, first would be “Cheap and Easy Bling” and a hole punch like the Pro Hole would make a nice clean hole. Without one I may have to resort to a drill. Next, I think that chip board might make nice sturdy covers for small book. I’m making faux capiz shells out of layers of waxpaper melted together. I had to cut the layers into circles first and layer them with thread between the sheet to connect the “shells”. If I have had a small hole sturdy punch I could melt the sheets together and punch the shells then punch small holes for stringing. It would be a major time saver since stacking sliding circles is a pain. 🙂 My list could go on there are so many times I’d wished I had a sturdy punch like the Pro Hole. My father had a leather punch similar to the Pro Hole and I’ve thought of it often, wishing I had one too.

I would love to win one of these punches! Wow they make book binding so easy. I immediately thought about make no my daughters Girl Scouts each a little pocket field notebook for nature hikes. They could tape leaves or draw what they see. And it would make a great little poison plant guide or first aid guide and the girls could decorate the front covers or make them themselves. I like be the durability of the leather bound guide (goodwill here I come), I would put watercolor paper removable a signatures so I could start practicing again and replace them with new ones or even put different types of paper, watercolor, sketching, and note paper for each different signature. I would share this with my 10 year old daughter! I homeschool her and she is fascinated by all things that have to do with dinosaurs! History, geology, geography, biology, linguistics etc. oh my – the list goes on and on. She has decided to skip this Halloween I favor of movies with the parents at home with the house darkened 😉 Shi is working excitedly on her costume for next year. Yes, you guessed it.. A dinosaur with wings to boot. She has sketched tre costume out and today practiced face painting different looks… I have some pleather material I would contribute to her project to make the costume come alive! That beautiful tool would make joining parts of the costume a breeze!!!!

Hi Lindsay! Big fan!!! 🙂 I think I would make leather bracelets for my bridesmaids. I would use the puncher to punch holes in the leather strip. Then I would weave satin cord through the holes. I would most likely add glass beads in the woven pattern too for some extra flare. 😉 I would find a cute closer to finish the bracelet. I would also make a mini leather books for me and my fiance so we could write our vows in them for our wedding day.♡ I live in the beautiful state of Wisconsin, USA.

I have made a journal cover similar to this and just used a craft piercing tool to make the holes on the cover, not the cleanest look. But I have been dying to put together refillable journal with watercolor paper so I can have a travel watercolor journal! This tool would be perfect to have and make inserts with!

There are so many things you could do with this but I know I would use it to help me make my first photo album for Christmas that I am giving to each member in my family and I have been trying to find a way to cover it were it will stay safe and I think faux leather would be perfect and I do not have a lot of tools to help me make and I am saving up now and going to go shopping for black Friday and hoping to find some amazing faux leather. I am taking group photos over the years of my family and going to put them all together and each person will get all the same photos. I have already started with the inside but now I know what to do for the cover. I recently been chatting with and old high school friend and she asked me if I had any pictures of us in high school. Well I did it just meant I had to go and look through one of the old shoe boxes I have my old pictures in. If I had that tool I would have no excuses not to finally get all those pictures in an album before I lose them all to Father Time. I graduated in 1962 so you can imagine the fate of my pictures.

Wow! What an awesome idea and great instructions. I think I can do this! I have some heavy vinyl upholstery material I have been dying to do something with, but didn’t know what. Now I do. I am a Navy kid currently in VA, but have lived in 5 other states. I would love to visit Maine some day, but haven’t gotten any closer than Cape Cod! (Oh, one more thing; I have odd feet sizes which requires straps to keep them on my feet, but most of the straps don’t have enough holes. This tool might help customize my shoes, Too!) Hey Lindsay..awesome giveaway… The first thing I would make is several ‘ Doodle-A-Day’ books to give to friends and family. I made myself one last year and I’ve been wanting to make more.. I use two binder rings so flipping through is easy. When you don’t have much time or on the go this is so handy to have ..I believe everyone should art everyday even if it’s just a small doodle. I love all of the videos about making journals or books. My mother in law gave me a leather purse she was going to throw away and I’ve been looking for something cool to make from it. This is amazing!! I bought some beautiful pieces of remnant leather LAST YEAR with the intention of making journals and have not tried it yet. I am so afraid of ruining them trying to put holes into them with an awl or some other way. Soooo excited about this tool. I came across this tutorial this morning as I was finishing the list of DIYs for christmas gifts. Yes, I know I’m late getting started and that’s why I need all the help I can get! My nephew is a fellow artist at SCAD in Savannah and he is always burning through artist journals! I want to make him regular and pocket size journals with all my various paper scraps! Your punch tool will help me do this quickly!!! And it will let me use so many different cover materials, especially the leather men like! I’m so excited!

I’m hoping this is the answer to my prayers. I make hand embellished Christmas trees from paper mâché cones. I order the cones on line from Darice. They are made of compressed layers of paper mâché and are very stiff and durable. It’s almost impossible for me to punch holes in the paper mâché so that I can string lights from the inside of the cone through the holes. Now that I’m thinking about it, the punch wouldn’t reach to the top of the cone anyway, so, never mind my entry. BUT, this is still a GREAT punch – the best I’ve seen so far.

This is truly a work horse tool. Love all the different size wholes. I make a lots of card for people who are sick and have surgeries and use my punch to add ribbons or strings or just wholes to the cards. I also do art journaling and have used whole punch before to add character to a page. I have also thought about making my own journal but never have because I didn’t have the right tool and this would be awesome and get the job done.

What a great idea! I can see stacks and stacks of left over scrapbook paper vanishing and giving me more room for new scrapbook supplies. There are several projects that the pro hole punch, the first would be to use suede/leather piece to create an on-the-go journal. Other projects include making a custom sized peerless water color holder so none of the peerless is cut, and finally, it would be awesome to cut tag holes at more than one at a time. If I were to win I would create a journal for our daughter to record her thoughts, feelings and plans during her current and unexpected pregnancy. Due to health reasons we were told she should not conceive. Instead of having 12″ of her intestines removed this month we learned she is pregnant. We are all thrilled and cautiously optomistic. I have been searching for a journal or a way to make one for her. Winning this would indeed be a blessing. Over the last week I’ve been watching various tutorials on journal making in hopes of finding a simple but usable design. I’m planning on making some of the smaller paper journals and adding them to my craft fair table. I have a jar of Faber-Castell texture paste that is dying to go on the cover of those cardboard journals with some swooshes!!

Great Idea for all those scraps!
The hole punching tool would be great for all sorts of projects but I’d probably use it first to make gateway journals. Can imagine having a corset like closure and this would make punching the holes in heavy chipboard a breeze!

I love all the books you’ve shown us how to make lately. But this last is my favorite. I would use the tool to make one or more with old leather purses. But since it can punch chipboard, that means it can punch through balsa or even thicker vinyl. That is a treasure for making boxes, baskets, or books! I’m in Virginia.

Great tutorial! Lots of tips – for some reason never thought to salvage leather from tossed old jackets, etc. And as another commented posted on YT, I’m going to harvest more leather from stuff I find at our local thrift shop. I plan to make the leather covered journal. It’s flexibility makes it very useful.

Lindsey, you have been such an inspiration to me. I have been following you for a year now and I have to say I have really learned a lot. My daughters and I have set up a craft room in our house, not nearly as large as your basement appears to be, but we are happy with it. Trying to collect all the supplies you need to do all your awesome tutorials is daunting. I think the first thing Imy duaghter would use the hole punch tool for would be to make junk journals that say together. I would really love to win one of those punches. I have been wanting one for a while now, but haven’t been able to afford it. I would definitely make some of those leather journals for myself and my girls. And it would also come in really handy for adding extra holes to my youngest daughters belts. She is really thin, and always has to wear a belt to keep her pants from falling off, but I always have to add holes to her belts to make them go tighter on her since she’s so slim.

I made a leather one that was limited to the size of leather I got from my local craft store, I thought if I liked it enough I would make another one with better leather.
So that is what I would make if I were to win this punch…the last one I made I used a pokey tool not sure what it is made for but it put a hole where I wanted it, I was just scared I would end up putting a hole in my hand also…

I’ve broken lots of pokey tools/awls trying to save time by going through too many layers or materials that are too thick for their purpose. This looks like it would work for so many things that I have hoarded because I knew I’d use them someday….

Thank you so much for sharing all your craftings and tips n tricks! I would like to ask you a question about watercolors. I recently purchased a travel kit by Sakura Koi, and have used it. My question is why does the paint kind of separate before it dries? Is it a poor quality or am i not using it correctly?

Hi, I’d love to make some leather journals too. It’s ironic because I have two coats I’ve been saving to recycle the leather as well. In addition, I would use it to punch additional holes in leather belts and shoe straps. I live in the USA.

Whoa! That punch is fantastic. Love how it goes cleanly through all the layers. Also using leather from an old coat is a great idea. I don’t have an old leather coat but I think a trip to Goodwill might be in order!

USA here, in NY. My family was in the garment industry and had a similar tool. It was old and rusted but sure did the job. I used it often as a kid, making belts, a vest with a grommet lace-up and lots of doll clothes from scraps of leather. I was always amazed how well it worked! Your project sure brought back some memories and I wish I still had that puncher…

Hey Lindsey – I love the video on making the different books. Since I am interested in making books for my grandchildren, I would love to use the super, heavy duty hole punch for helping me bind those books. I am also interested in making art journals so, once again, the Skilled Crafter Pro Hole Punch would work wonders in that area.

Unfortunately, I’m getting bad arthritis in both hands (and need joint replacement surgery in both thumbs!), so all the more manual ways of putting holes in things are getting hard for me! I’ve always wanted a tool like this ~ it looks ergonomic and easy to use. I have some old belts I’d like to turn into (adjustable!) wrist cuffs, and this punch looks perfect! It also looks like it’d make short work of the mat board covers I use for journal covers sometimes.

This is cool!! I want to make a mini watercolor book for experimentation with colors, as I am new, and when it’s full I want to use the pages as backgrounds for drawings and such. This punch would make life easier!!

I would use the Pro Hole Punch to make keychain charms for Veterans. I would cut out of leather in the shape of a cross. I would stamp their Branch of service and the word “Vet.” I it would be a way to honor my fellow brother and sister Veterans.

I found some scraps to make a journal after digging through many tubs of material. I had to make the holes with a hand punch , so the tool would be great to use. There will be many journals for gifts from this tutorial, thanks.

Hi Lindsey, Your tutorial showed up with perfect timing. I know many folks from where I live in the Midwest do not like to think about Christmas until at least Advent, but I need to start planning early. I wanted to give a Traveler’s Notebook to my granddaughters but learned they were out of my budget. The first thing I would make would be a couple of journals. Your tutorial gave me an idea how to do it and where to get materials for the cover. I didn’t even think about upcycling a coat or even a handbag. I would use some graph paper I got from a thrift store last year as inserts. I think that would make a very nice gift from Grandma.

I love to do crafts, especially diy. I would make a leather bound journal as my first project. I would then donate the journal to the cancer ward of my nearby hospital. People that are undergoing chemo and such dont have much to do but sit there. I want to be able to bring a smile to their face during their treatment.

O my goodness Lindsey! I would love to win this and what i would do 1st is make something awesome for my mom…she is getting on in years and she loves her grand babies so much i think i would make it with a really durable outside cover and then make the pages exactly as u did and add some card stock on like every other page. That way she would have plenty of room for pictures but also be able to journal something about the pictures in large enough print for her to read without straining her eyes. I do live in the US and thank you so much for the chance at winning such an awesome prize.

I’m in the USA!!! Wow! That looks like a really great hole punch. I’ve been wanting to make up a lot of notebooks, so the first thing I’d use the punch for is that. Hi Lindsey from Il, USA, I am just getting started in watercolor painting. Been crafting for years. Everyone says keeping a journal for sketching and painting is a must. I looked at the ones in the stores and my immediate thought was how to put my stamp on it. What a great tutorial! I’ve been following you on YouTube and have learned a lot. This is one more thing I will try. First a watercolor journal, then, who knows! One question, is the punch easy for a person with arthritis? My hands aren’t what they used to be. Thank you!

This is really great. I desperately need a punch like this to finish a cross stitch needlework project. It is suppose to be a tag and needs a hole punched at the top but it is too thick for anything I have. Love the leather journal.

I’d also make a journal – like most others here. But my journal is for a friend and it’s a TEXTURE Journal, creating sets of pages of different kinds of textures, like using linen on one page with a pocket, using the textured paper/card from a coffee cup, using hessian (and there are different grades of coarseness in hessian that I can get), any other different materials, gessoed canvas (from my canvas roll) watercolour paper, card from packaging, string, things from the garden, stencils and texture paste, hot glue, anything I can find to make a different surface for her to experiment with. My only problem is how to bind it. Your video and a punch like this would solve that final hurdle.

Your little books are so cute! I’ve been looking for an easier way to punch holes in my book board for coptic bindings but I’ve also wanted to try making Midori style books like what you’ve done. This also looks like it would work beautifully for a traditional cord bound book for punching the holes in the cover. This hole punch sounds like the perfect fit for what I’ve been looking for!
