Hi Friends! I love trying new techniques and old techniques using new products. This week I got to play with a moldable plastic product called Plasty-Craft. I made all the embellishments in this box with it. Hey, do you want a chance to win a jar of Plasty-Craft? Let me know what you would use it for in the comments below!
The thing I was really excited about is that I can get the look and durability of polymer clay without having to bake it. You simply heat the plastic pellets in hot water for 2 minutes (it will turn from milky white pellets to a clear looking clay like substance) and you are ready to use it in any molds you have or you can freehand sculpt things! I bet you could flatten some on a craft mat and stamp on it too, the possibilities are endless. My daughters really had fun playing with Plasty-Craft too, they made gobs of embellishments and then painted them for use in future jewelry projects. The Plasty-Craft embellishments are hard and rigid when cool. They take acrylic paint beautifully. If you decide you don’t want any of the things you made you can remelt it and try again. For that reason I would not paint my embellishments until I was sure I wanted to keep them. If you have any unused Plasty-Craft left after a crafting session (it is unlikely, this stuff is crazy addictive to play with!) simple flatten it out so it will melt quickly next time and put it back in the jar. Tips and Tricks:
- I am not sure if my thermometer was off (I was using a meat thermometer because that was all I had-ironic huh- to measure the temperature of the water) but I had more success with hotter water. Using hotter water (200 degrees F) did not harm the plastic but if you are using this with kids make sure it is cool enough for them to handle so no-one gets burned.
- The Plasty-Craft worked in all of the molds I tried. Flexible molds were easier to use because you can flex the mold to pop out the embellishment. Since the Plasty-Craft is rigid it is more difficult to remove from ceramic, hard plastic or handmade scrap polymer clay molds but it did work with them just fine. I used a pin to get between the mold and the Plasty-Craft and it popped right out.
- There is no waste, simply flatten out unused Plasty-Craft and put it back in the jar. I was concerned that reheating the Plasty-Craft would make it tough and unworkable but it did not, the girls kept making stuff, melting it back down and making more stuff. They had a ball and we reheated the plastic at least 6 times.
- If you need to rework an area of your design you can submerge that part of the piece in hot water to only soften that part too although I did not play with sculpting too much.
- You can also use Plasty-Craft for repairing household items or making comfortable handles for tools, I know some ladies who use it to make crochet hook handles,
My only concern using Plasty-Craft was if it might melt on accident but after working with it and seeing that you need to submerge it in really hot water for 2 minutes I think it is unlikely. I would not leave it in a hot car or on top of a heat register though-I rarely do with my artwork LOL! I made a mold of a camero I had with scrap polymern clay and I tried the PlastyCraft in the mold, worked great, I made 2 so I could make earrings!

I use air dry clay with my Martha Stewart molds for a lot of my projects, but I have never seen this plastic used. I would love to give it a try.

the only thing I don’t like about the Martha air dry clay is that if you get it wet it will get gooey. It is light though and great for mailing but for home decor or jewelry I prefer Plasty-Craft or Polymer clay. I am glad there is a clay for ever need!

This is awesome!! I have heard of something like this but haven’t tried it because of the cost! Would love to win some so I don’t feel guilty if I don’t like it. I would use it to make fairy houses and fairy doors to keep the magic alive for my grandchildren!!! I plan to put a fairy door in a few places in my house and letting the grandkids find them and tell them the story of fairies! Sounds like this would be the perfect medium since I can remelt it and make different doors to keep them guessing where the fairies are residing each time they come to our house!!

I’m going to use it to repair a water fountain frog that fell and broke ( my dog took a dip and knocked it onto the patio!). I will also use it to make jewelry findings instead of metal, and I have some vintage buttons I would mold to make bracelets, since I can’t bear to part with the real ones. Happy Crafting!

I’ve had this in my saved items at Amazon for the LONGEST time but, like another poster, I couldn’t justify the expense — especially if I ended up not liking it!
I love all kinds of crafting and trying new things. The idea that’s swimming in my head now is a miniature marionette. I’d like to see how it work for making miniature dishes, flatware, pots, etc., from custom molds I could create. Also, every year a friend and I make about 30-40 hand-made trinket-style Christmas gifts. We’re having a hard time coming up with an idea for this year, but I think this would open the door for creating unique embellishments that may not be easy to find and might get our juices flowing!
BTW: I watch your YouTube channel several times a week and love variety!

AND there is no smell with this, resin is pretty stinky and more expensive. i am going to experiment with coloring the PlastyCraft so you don’t have to paint it. I plan on trying that after I get back from vacation:)

What I really like is that you can melt it over again if it doesn’t come out right the first time. I have tried the Plaid “Mod Melts” and those are fun, but they can’t be put back in the glue gun once molded – so if you mess them up, they’re wasted.

So, no making a sun-shield for the car window if you live in a very humid and hot area.Got it! LOL. I do think this would be great for embellishing picture frames. The bird you used on the box looks rather big. What I need is a bigger bird than most of the molds can offer. And your bird looked bigger. I guess you meant it is a Martha Srewart. And now I’m in doubt if you meant that Castin Craft is a brand or just means you made the mold yourself.???
Yes Amazon has some stores who ships internationally. But most times the shipping runs up in outrageous amounts. More than the product. I do often shop on E Bay . But not E Bay Spain…but EBay USA or UK. Shopping from E Bay Spain does’nt give many options to find what you look for.

Wow! That stuff looks really cool! Way better than the air dry clay that I tried. I bought several different colors and after a few months of non-use, they were all hard and unusable. (completely sealed in unopened packages.
As I have learned from you on several occasions, my wheels are turning, and I am wondering if you can add color to the plastic and “work it in” to have it dry w/ opaque color??? Oh please try that and do a video on your success’ and misses! I wonder if dye based reinkers would work, maybe alcohol inks or even the acrylic paint itself!

Great video, looks like lots of fun. I would use the Plasty-craft for a molded handle on my loom knitting hook for days when my fingers are stiff and I have trouble knitting. I have a bunch of hard molds for polymer clay that I would like to experiment with to see if they work with the Plasty-Craft.

I’ve never heard of it but it’s awesome! I’d love to make some knobs from a dresser I’m redoing. I could do all sorts of stuff with it. Mixed media things, home dec things…there’s so much you can do!

Wonderful! I would use it in my mixed media artwork. Sea shells on canvas etc. I also see myself making fancy corner edges for handmade books, molding it around pens would be an interesting experiment as well. Kids would delight in making fridge magnets.

Ofcourse, charms can be made from this .. i think this will also add wonderful textures to canvas or cards..

I’ll be using it to build up a weak spot on our cat’s favorite toy…it keeps breaking and super glue just isn’t cutting it. I also will experiment with some of my metal stencils.

This reminds me of .. hmm fantastic plastic? pellets? which i loved. Id love to see how well this worked to fill the smaller more intricate molds, like bees, are the tiny birds? I didnt know this was available, thanks so much for sharing with us. What first made me stop and view the post was the box, as I have been playing with covering and adding journals to a creme cheese box. Hate to throw anything away. OHHH, hey? Could you mold it through a stencil? ooooh, i have a stencil that would be great to use for that box im playing with.. yummmy, wheres that coupon at? =)

I have a collection of Martha and Plaid silicone molds, plus some I made with the Melt Art putty, but they never get used cause I hate using the melting pot. Plus I only have the clear UTEE which becomes ambered if its heated more than just a couple mins. Sometimes you just need a solid white base to start with! This would be perfect and maybe I wouldn’t be as nervous working with it as I am with the 500 degree melting pot!

Oh how wonderful! I’ve used clay, Utee and even hot glue sticks in my silicone molds but this is even better. Thank you so much for posting this. This is going to be great for the kiddos this summer and I don’t have to worry about the grands burning themselves. I can always count on you for a ‘go to’ project just right for the little one.
