I Treated Myself! {New quilting fabric!}

Hi friends! I had so much fun making those 2 small quilts for my girls that I thought I would pick up some fabric to make a quilt for myself. It was hard to select the first few prints but then I thought “If you like it, get it!” I was pretty much on a roll after that! And to top it off most of the fabrics were on sale! I paid between .39 cents and $1.25 a quarter yard. I was in fabric heaven. Of course this is going to create a kink in my fabric storage solution, I’ll have to revamp that a bit, or add-on another crate, or sew it up quick! Have a look at what I bought. Don’t worry, I am not putting all of this on one quilt. What should I use first?

What I got and what I paid:

  • 4 zippers at .25 cents each
  • 4 10-yard-rolls of 1 1/2″ wide patterned grosgrain ribbon for $1.49 a roll (reg yardage price is $8.90 a roll!)
  • 2 yards of precut batting for $3
  • 2 yard cut of watercolor print for $4
  • 1/2 yard of solid brown for $1.75
  • 1/2 yard floral remnant for .80 cents
  • 27 1/4 yards of cotton prints ranging in price from 39 cents to $1.25 each

Alright quilters, did I do good? My total for the whole shebang was $37 and that included tax. Being a beginner I know I will make mistakes and I will be nervous to cut into pricey material so this way I can play and not hoard…although looking back at the prices of some of these I was thinking “Why didn’t I get more?” I hope you had a crafty weekend! Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

  1. The price is right, but is it great quality material? I figure if I’m going to put all that time into it, it’s got to be really good material, not something cheap. So hopefully you got that. My first queen size cost about $200 just for the material alone. Lots of figures in the ones you showed. I’m more of a small print person myself and add some plain colors with it. Good luck. It will probably turn out beautiful. Be sure to let us see it when you’re done. Edna B.

    1. Thanks! Yes the materials is quality, high thread g=count and feels nice with a tight weave. I have bought fabric there for clothing for years. They have big brands that are normally really expensive but they are all discontinued prints (last season) so they sell it cheap! It is a surplus store with deals with companies to buy to closeouts. There is actually a wedding boutique like that here too, no dress over $250 because they are all designer samples or discontinued or second hand, there was a $4k dress they were selling for $250, the lady who got married in it did not want to keep it. We Mainers are thrifty!

  2. Wow! You really got a deal! Where do you get fabric for those prices? I have made a few large quilts and a few baby ones and I’ve never gotten such good prices. And I like to think I’m a “frugal” crafter:). So glad for you.

    1. I go the Mardens (A surplus store in MAine) but other places have stores like this, Windmill Fabrics in Boston also sells discontinued fabrics for under $4 a yard. You might need to ask around and hopefully there is a shop in your area lioke this. I don’t think I would dare cut into a $12 a yard fabric yet LOL!

  3. You did very well! Feed that creative spirit. I just love your positive attitude and can do spirit. Fabric just makes some of us feel great!
I’ve been a quilter and artist for a very long time. It isn’t fun to deprive that side of my brain. The whole person suffers when I give in to the idea of deprivation. Ha! Ha! Again, you did very well.

  4. I don’t know anything about quilting, but the material is beautiful. You can learn on this, and get expensive material later for something special. You amaze me.

    1. it is a surplus store, it has a little bit of everything but every one has an amazing fabric department. I think it has a deal with the big fabric stores to buy off their discontinued fabrics. It is a treasure hunt. I have got designer clothes there too, $200 dresses for $15, it is a bargain hunters paradise!

  5. I would pic the piece that really screams my name and then I would pick a lighter piece and a darker piece to go with them and then some coordinating prints in various colors. all your fabrics are nice but the top left floral in the front row is calling to me.

  6. I really appreciated you sharing your fabric buy. I want to make a new batch of cards and was trying not to make anything too bright. Time of year seemed inappropriate. After seeing your fabrics I need to make some bright, happy cards. Thanks.

  7. As long as that was good material you did GREAT! Wish I could get some bargains like that! The trick to a great quilt is to use: small print, medium print and large scale print fabric with some that read as solid – at least that’s what I like. I don’t like following patterns much either. I just made 7 quilts for my family, 4 more to go, and they are all pretty much scrappy quilts. I mostly plan as I go which drives some of my quilting friends crazy.

    1. it is good stuff, it is cheap because it is last seasons prints/discounted. The labels are always moda, joann, etc and it feels good and has a constant weave unlike some of the fabrics walmart sold (not all walmart fabric is bad either, don’t get me wrong) Mardens is a surplus/salvage place and they but all closeouts, I found a place in Boston called Windmill fabrics that does the same and their materiel is all under $4 a yard.

  8. I think you have the right idea. Start out with less expensive and when you get going good buy more expensive. I finished a quilt for my king size bed and had a friend at a local quilt shop to quilt it for me. By the time I got finished we will not talk about the cost at $10.00, $11.00 and $12.00 per yard for the fabric. A disappearing nine patch would be easy to do. I have one started that I need to finish. Right now I am crocheting a baby blanket with farm animals on it. I have to many irons in the fire. Good luck on your quilt. And have a good week.

  9. If you are uncertain of what fabric/shapes will works together, color scan and copy them and audition the pzttern you think will work with cut up copy. Once done, photocopy the audition in black/white to see if darks lights are complimentory.
    and
    measure twice….cut once……

  10. oh my Lindsay. I had THAT time, saw a lot, mainly making rag dolls (to sell),and needed cute fabrics, and in short yardage. well, I ended up becoming a fabricaholic, just you know! đŸ˜‰ yea, I ended up buying so many fabrics more than I ever have time to saw in my life time…., like us the stampers tend to hoard pretty papers, and end up just looking at them, instead of using them all… haha… well, at least, that’s me. đŸ™‚ I enjoyed looking at those pretty prints fabrics đŸ™‚

  11. We have very few fabric stores where I live. The ones we do have
are very expensive so I think you did really good.
Could you show us how you store your fabric. I have mine stored
on top of my closet. I can see what I have but if I want something on the bottom, it is hard to pull it out.

  12. I’ve not read ALL of the comments posted here, so this suggestion may have already been made. The material should fall into 3 shades: light, medium and dark. I see light and dark in your grouping, but you may need a fabric or two in a “light color.” Go have fun and practice! After this you will learn more about more expensive fabrics, how the iron, how thick they are, etc. So far by sticking with better known manufacturers, you’ve done really well.

  13. I don’t quilt…hurts my hands, but do like to use cut outs from materials for cards….go figure, I can do one with no problem, but cannot sew on a button…LOL!
I REALLY like the first oriental fabric you showed…flowers or butterflies???? Would be a beautiful pillow or quilt!!!
Your prices sound like excellent deals!!!!

  14. I know nothing about fabric. What is a jelly roll? I’m guessing that it’s the rectangular thing that the fabric is rolled onto at the store. I’ve been told that no question is a dumb one, lol đŸ™‚

  15. Here is what I think…….You are so lucky to have such a store available near you. There is nothing like that where I live and I guess that might be a good thing. I can just see myself loading up on supplies because the beauty of it is calling to me, and then never getting around to doing anything with it. LOL… Have fun and make sure we all get to see the finished product.
