I’m in the “Hot Seat!”

Hi friends! I am super excited! Today at 3pm ET I will be in the “hot seat” with Derral Eves! He is a big time video marketing consultant and he picked my YouTube channel The Frugal Crafter to evaluate! He has worked with me to grow my channel and make better videos over the past couple months and now he will assess my channel and offer tips on making it better. If you are a YouTube creator I encourage you to check out his videos and subscribe, He makes lots of technical stuff easy to understand too. I am so grateful that he chose my channel to help out:) You will be able to see the interview on the player below, if you are seeing a countdown it has not happened yet. I think it will repeat on this player too but I am not sure…you’d have to ask Derral, he is the technical one:)

Wish me luck on this and if it has happened already I hope it helped other video creators out there, especially the craft tutorial ones. Thanks so much for watching and til next time happy crafting!

  1. He will asses my channel? I’m not trying to sound like an ass. It just looks funny to me. Yes, I know it’s an abbreviation and I’m being like 3 years old. I just found it funny. LOL… Congratulations! I love all your videos. I think with as many followers and friends you have you must be doing something right. Great work!

      1. I felt bad for commenting on it. I was afraid that you would take it the wrong way. I even tried to find a way to delete it but couldn’t. Thinking back I should’ve sent a private message. I had an aunt that would correct everyone at the drop of a hat. It drove me nuts growing up!

I wanted to tell you that your personality is your best selling feature. You have the personality that makes anyone want to pull a chair up beside you and start working. You’re a motivator. Keep those ideals rolling! 🙂 Congratulations again.

  7. Best of luck, Lindsay! I used to be a Trainer of Trainers, and, yes, there are lots of techniques that can be taught and learned. But what I like the very most about your videos is the competence and knowledge that you show. If I want to learn about it, I turn to your site first. That cannot be taught. You go, Girl!

        1. good job Linds…i think you were doing most of what he suggested and were doing well before this (unless he gave you some tips you already implemented!) i want so much for you to make $$ but i hope you dont change how you do your vids (unless you do more of em, lol!). i know and understand you have to do what is best for you and your family and i am excited for you with the new book coming (although i am in no position to purchase anything right now)
I was not trying to be negative during the show, just i felt that Derral was, i dont know, making you seem less than…what you were doing, how you were doing, something, idk…i just felt like protecting you! i was trying to have your back! didnt mean to offend you or him if i did. i just thought you have done such a wonderful job thus far and i appreciate all you do for your ‘fans’.
i will continue to do the little bit i do to promote you. i do try, i know i have had a lot of people follow my ‘thefrugalcrafter’ board and once i have my blog really up and running, some day, lol (its up but i do nothing with it) i will be happy to promote it there and will continue to praise you to everyone i meet, or talk to (had a few from fb start to follow you as well, but i am not posting there right now.
i do so wish you so much luck and i will pray and ask for some insight that might help you get more ‘discovered’ … one day, would love to see you on tv (well i dont have tv/cable, lol) like the queen of crafts, Ms. Carol Duvall ❤ … dont know if you would like that or not, but i wish you the best only and always.
          your fan/friend, cindy
(ps…in my opinion…please dont do the music instead of your talking with us (even though you cant hear us, we do talk back, lol …i know you have been doing some voice overs, but please dont make all of them like that (doesnt that take more time and effort? curious) anyway dont change thnigs to much, xoxo

          1. the only thing i can think of for more exposure is to announce a giveaway on fb, twitter, yt, your blog/webpage, etc for maybe one of your beautiful paintings or a card set with matching envelopes a cute box to keep them in, your handmade jewelry, diy items like your spray inks, crocheted/knitted or other stuff that can be worn that you made, you have made so many things and maybe you might be able to get rid of some of your ufo’s?) and an art set, like water color paints, pencils…different types of mediums, ink pads, sprays, stamp sets, etc …a box of goodies to maybe get someone started with some crafting or to add to what they have. I do have to say, the only thing negative about giveaways, lots of people just come for that and then go away again till the next one. But i think yo have such awesome fans and new ones to come it might help ya, and surely you can get sponsors to pony up supplies for a BIG giveaway!! (papers and tools too!) am i dreaming to big, lol 🙂

Nothing drastic I assure you and I will not be running a music bed under my entire videos, nothing against those who do, it’s just not me:) I was not offended and neither was Derral, no worries sweetie!

  12. Thank you for alerting me to this live program. It was so exciting. His suggestion about posting more on Pinterest is such a good one. That is exactly where I ran across you while perusing watercolor tutorials. When I learned that not only do you share your teaching skills, but also where to find supplies at the best prices… I was totally hooked. Your encouraging comments as to “start with what you have” and “don’t worry about wasting your colors, just start” have been the biggest “hurdle jumpers for me. Thank you, I feel like I now have someone “in my corner” for whatever I want to try. God Bless you, you are doing a wonderful job. -Bobbi

Can’t wait to see your first collaboration in a couple of days. I hope you can still continue to give us wonderful videos every day once you become not only famous but ‘rich and famous’ as you are the highlight of my day…every day.
What a lightweight Derril is only watching 100 of your videos lol. I’ll bet that if he saw some of your early ones he could see how you’ve become so much more confident and yourself as you got into the swing of it. I hope you get lots of new subscribers now, you truly deserve to do well with this part of your crafting life. Good onya, girlfriend. x

  14. Hi Lindsay, I just watched part of the Hot Seat video where you mention making a watercolour e book. I would be all over that (so you have already sold one!!!) I make cards and I just purchased some Peerless watercolours and brushes. I have never used this medium before and I’m anxious to learn. In particular, I want info on mixing colours. I know that you mention this in your videos of individual paintings but it would be nice to have some general guidelines all in one spot. I know blue and yellow make green but how do you make more subtle colours like different shades of black, brown and skin tones for example. I know I could take some classes locally but I don’t want to be a watercolour artist. I just want to make cards! I have been colouring with Prismacolors but I am not sure that skill (ha, ha!) is transferable to watercolours as they seem so different. I have been meaning to ask you about this for a while so the timing is perfect. Thanks for your help.

I have learned so much about creating in all different kinds of mediums. The most exciting for me was all you’ve taught about watercolor painting. You have truly enhanced and enriched my creative life through generously sharing your knowledge. I hope now you will be richly rewarded through Derrel’s suggestions. BTW, I never heard of him before today, but I liked the presentation so much I subscribed to him, too! Thank you with all my heart. Dorothy

  20. Hi Lindsay! Congratulations to you for taking the steps you are to improve your business. I wish you all the luck in the world and hope you see progress sooner vs. later. I agreed with a lot of what Deral said and think he had some good points. You strike me as someone who can take advice and make it your own so you are still in control and that will keep you and your business thriving. Anyhoo, I got a bit off track with that thought…. What I was going to say was, what I agreed with him most about was your “magnetic personality”. You truly do have one and in my humble opinion it is your biggest money maker! Good luck with it all. I look forward to seeing the changes, no matter how subtle or large they may be.

  21. One of the things I (and maybe others) would like to purchase from you would be a collection of line drawings of the pictures you use in your painting and color pencil tutorials. Since I like to trace (because I can’t draw) I would love to have a complete set (or several smaller sets) of all your line drawings. You could sell them on your MYGRAFICO page. I have purchased your w/c tutorials there but I really like to paint the things you demonstrate in your videos. (I hardly follow the written directions in the purchased tutorials–I just need the pictures, and maybe the list of paint colors you use.)

Have you tried contacting the companies that you often recommend, Like Dick Blick, Cheap Joes, Utrecht, Oriental Trading, your local craft store you shop at all the time, Jerry’s Artarama,–not Daniel Smith, they are getting rid of everything but their own paint brand, Joanns maybe, etc. and asking if they would like to advertise on your blog and channel? Oh, Paper Warehouse and Crafter’s Companion, too.

Whenever you recommend a product or company in one of your vidoes I look them up and bookmark them to check them out later. You know that if you say it’s good, we buy it!

Also wanted to thank you for including in your target audience women who are 65. I just made it by a year but I’m glad to be included. 🙂

  22. You were great, his ideas were great, but some of the viewers comments, like, “play music while doing a video..,” please oh please don’t change your style music would take away from all the things you teach us in an indirect way. Others need music because they are not explaining why they do what they do to make it look like it looks, so they need music to fill the void. With you there is no void, your constantly teaching us, you are not “full of yourself” that is why people are drawn to you. I want you to continue to have much success while still being Lindsey which I know you will
You are a treasure on this YouTube platform because of who you are and your emmense talent, your knowledge and willingness to share your knowledge, your heart and personality.
    Thankyou for everything you do

I think you should illustrate another book and certainly somewhere in your thousands of followers is someone writing one right now. I would also be willing to purchase a book (or ebook) called LIndsay’s Tips and Techniques, where you have organized by subject your recipes for substitute things to use when we don’t have a particular item and also include the answers to many of your “Ask a Crafter” questions. I really want you to be able to benefit from all you do for us, and I pray your husband is doing well.

  24. Hi Lindsay, I thought the segment was interesting but I’m not sure I would follow all his suggestions…I find some crafters who are more commercial are much less appealing.

One comment: Knowing you, I am sure you didn’t mean to be restrictive but I am outside of your stated target age group :-(. As a 71 year old physician, I have just retired and I am starting to spend time painting and drawing. I have loved your watercolor and drawing videos, have purchased many products such as inktense pencils, Gelli Plate, stencils, stamps, art journal, etc, once I have seen you demonstrate them. I have wanted to paint my whole life but it is only now that I have the time…so please don’t forget seniors.

Lastly, I love the beautiful Maine scenes that you paint and I enjoy similar scenery on my vacations. For those of us who live in cities, could you consider doing an occasional sketch of skyscrapers, Brooklyn Bridge, etc. i find these subjects more difficult and would welcome some suggestions on how to approach them. I have photos of incredible cityscapes I could share that you might consider using.

Please don’t put my name or email out there. Thanks much!

    Your fan in Brooklyn

    1. I did not mean to be exclusive, I know I have viewers as young as children and as old as 100 and I love that. I just meant that 75% of my viewers are 35-65 year old women., it is info I can see in my youtube stats, that also seems to be the groups that comments and engages most too. We get a few men from time to time (14% actually) and the rest are women and girls older and younger. I’m here for everyone but he wanted a specific age group, I’m pretty broad actually, most channels only appeal to a 10 year span like 14-24 or 25-34 etc. I used to be the art director of a senior center actually so no worries:)

Lol… I have a question though, and I haven’t seen you (or anyone else for that matter) address it, but it concerns adhesives. There are a TON of them out there, so how do you know which kinds to use for/on what? Could you do a tutorial on adhesives soon? Or maybe you’ve already done one. If so could you guide me to it? Thanks so much! Keep the videos coming!

  27. I admit I am a total computer idiot…but I am having a terrible time finding your recipe and instructions on how to make your gelli plate…the updated one with glycerin. I know what the measurements are, but is it hot water, cold water or a combination of the two. Also I don’t know how or where to store it…if and when I ever get made. Not sure how to microwave it if it doesn’t come out totally flat…how long or on what level. Also…can you make it in something other than a plastic frame? I am unable to find one of those old plastic box frames. All I can find is a cake pan…and I don’t know if you can make it in a metal pan. I know if it comes out uneven I certainly can’t put that in a microwave! I am just very confused.. but I would really like to try it. By the way I love your videos…I still can’t use watercolors with a fiddle…I am an oil painter…but I keep trying. I am killing a lot of trees! Please keep them coming! MaryAnn

    1. relax, if you mess up just remelt it on the stove or microwave and re pour it. Yes you can use a metal pan. You can cut up the gelatin and put it it a glass measuring cup to remelt it. Don’t worry:) If you are really freaked out start with a normal gelatin plate and if you love it try the permanent recipe or purchase a gelli plate. Depending on the price of glycerin where you like it might not be that more expensive:) More info here: https://thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com/2013/05/24/diy-gelatin-plate-prints/ and here: https://thefrugalcrafter.wordpress.com/2013/05/25/a-permanent-gelatin-printing-plate-hectograph-an-annoying-project-a-birthday-card/

I hope that everything works out for you and that your channel expands. I agree with Darrel when he talked about your character; that’s what drew me to you, aside from your awesome tutorials. I’m going to be honest here with you. When I came upon your channel, I was browsing for hand-made card tutorials. I was very ill at the time and somewhat down. I missed working and being able to do stuff on a regular basis….and then I found myself laughing and being cheered up by your amazing sunny, funny, cheerful disposition, and I was hooked. I may not comment a lot, but know this, I truly can say that you have made me look forward to making crafts, cards, etc, but most of all, you make me smile. I enjoy all the crafts, tutorials, and advice on your channel, especially Ask a Crafter and its fun packed segments . So keep up the wonderful work and I wish you great success. Eve
