How to Draw Faces {Art Journal Tutorial}

Hi Friends! People seem to have a tough time drawing faces but it is quite easy if you know a few tricks. Here is a journal page I made yesterday:

DCF 1.0

I constantly need to remind myself of that when I am obsessing over something that I did or said or was said to me. It is also a very useful quote when dealing with tween girl drama! Good ole’ Eleanor Roosevelt, keepin’ it real since 1884 LOL! Now on to the super easy face drawing tutorial:

I hope you try this, charcoal, conte’ crayon and pastel are great for this as you can smudge away any mistakes, You can use hairspray (the cheapest stuff is best like Aqua Net aerosol) to set the drawing before adding more media as well. Have fun with it. Faces are so expressive and art journaling is about expression so naturally they go hand in hand…or face as the case may be. I hope you enjoyed this bonus art journal project this week and til next time happy crafting!

  1. GREAT video, Lindsay! It gives me the courage to try a face. Would you consider doing another video that would show how to make a more polished face like the one in your journal? Thanks!

  3. Great tutorial Lindsay! I have always struggled with faces and this tutorial showed me what I was doing wrong. Sorry about the negativity of someone. Have to feel a little sorry for their unhappiness. Anyway, you are great and have given me the courage to start drawing again after 30 years away from it! Thank You!

  5. Great video. I have alway been intimidated about drawing faces but I tried it right away and drew 6 quite acceptable faces. And it is all because of your very good instructions. Now my art journal will begin to have faces other than magazine cutouts. Thanks a bunch. Your blog and You Tube channel are the first of my stops on the internet each day.

  8. Lindsay, you have taught so many so much and it’s unfortunate that some ungrateful individuals can’t appreciate that. You make art so approachable and for that I will always be grateful. Your energy and enthusiasm are contagious and I will continue to be a loyal watcher of all your videos!

  9. Dear Lindsay, I so look forward to your tutorials every day. Thank you so much for sharing your time and talent. You are a special sparkle in the life of this lonely lady. I have tried new art supplies that I wouldn’t have otherwise, and even made my first gelli plate. You are an inspiration!

  10. another great instruction tut/vid! thanks so much… and as for the ‘complainer’ Lindsay, yes dont let it get to you (i know easier said than done) I NEEDED THIS QUOTE, too SO THANKS! i cant believe someone wouldnt like your vids/tuts! they are great! i haved watched literally hundreds of ‘how to’ vids and the like, and BELIEVE me, you are a gem and one of the ONLY ones i will watch and ENJOY!! others might have great ideas, but just dont have what it takes to make good/great vids. YOU do, my dear… so dont fret….just keep making em and we will keep enjoying them!! a BIG THANK YOU for what you do for us and always inspiring us and cheering us up 🙂 ❤ (curious what vid they didnt like?) thanks again Lindsay…… a million! please dont change your way! you have always answered people if they had specific questions… we love the way you do your videos, you inspire and give 'instructions' but not boxed in so we cant add our own creativity! when it is important, you give it to us, otherwise, most of us ' have a clue' as to what to do! and you are there for us when we have doubt/hand holding! lol DONT CHANGE YOUR STYLE! you rock! she needs to go to a professional class and PAY for it to get specific instructions i guess, this is not for her. and its not like you are getting paid to share with us… geeze! people need to get a clue and have something called 'GRATITUDE'! 🙂 Lindsay i appreciate you very much and what you do for us……. and you may never know just what you do that helps many of us until we all leave this earth!

  11. Good morning Lindsey,
    I saw your delightful video on how to construct a face, can’t thank you enough for the instruction. I will try to draw more faces now after watching this. I agree, with all the positive feed back you receive on your video’s the negative ones are best dusted away. I look forward to each and every one. Keep up the wonderful work, you are very much appreciated in my humble opinion.

  16. I was going back through some of your videos (I’ve saved many of them) and this one caught my eye. Amazing! You make it seem so easy. I could just imagine that little girl reading a book (and it was just a sketch). Anyway, thank you so much. And I would like you to know that your videos are always a joy to watch. I watched someone elses video last night & appreciated yours even more. Took this person 34 minutes, and I got one small thing that I learned. You talk fast, but it’s always entertaining.
