Hello friends! I hate to admit it but my craft area is a disaster, even my friend Kathy O. (not to be confused with Kathy J of the Marden’s Haul) said she hadn’t seen my craft room this trashed before. Well, I let Kathy see my trashed room, what’s a couple thousand more people right, here it is just in time for What’s on Your Workdesk Wednesday:
Normally I would not let a sole see my studio in this state but I had a lot to do and no time to tidy when she came over to help me film Ask A Crafter today. To say I lost track of time would be an understatement, we always lose track of time especially when we are crafting or talking about crafting (or drinking tea and flipping through magazines about crafting) and today was no exception, we got pages and pages of questions (which we answered all of them) and pages of comments (I only picked a few to read) and we filmed about 2 and a half hours of footage! What do I do? I don’t want to cut out any questions but asking people to watch 2 plus hours of video to hear their question is a lot. Any suggestions? My husband thinks I should pick 10 questions and call it good but I feel bad leaving anyone out. Hubby is also amazed that anyone watches the 45 minute shows LOL! Maybe I should use a stopwatch and limit my answers to a minute, I could give my co-host a taser and they could shock me if I go over LOL! Hey, then I might not have to curl my hair hahaha! I am getting ready to slap the segments together and upload my video now, I think I will put it in two parts to make uploading more manageable. Also I think I might look into the shock treatment idea, it would be an incentive plus more people might want to co-host with me if they know they can zap me if I get long winded. So the question is for those of you who WATCH Ask a Crafter should I limit my questions, set a time limit for my responses or keep it as-is and let it run as long as it goes? I really want to know! I like your explanations and I know if the question was mine I would appreciate a full answer. I don’t mind the 45 minute videos at all. Sometimes I paint while you are talking or do some other craft. You are so full of good ideas and frugal ways to get stuff done I wouldn’t want to miss a thing.

Okay, here is my two cents. I say don’t cut because we can always save it to our favorites and watch later, but I tend to sit and watch the 45 minutes all the way through so what is 15 more minutes. You share such good information and you are so funny. But whatever you decide I will still watch.

I love your Ask a Crafter segments and have no problem watching it for long periods of time. I can always shut it off and pick it up later if I need to do something else. Please don’t limit yourself – we love the knowledge and encouragement you share.

I would watch your videos no matter how long they are! Much better than anything on tv! Having said that, do whatever is best for you. If uploading the videos is a hassle, maybe split them into two parts? It may have reached the point where you have to pick and choose questions to respond to. I know you hate to do that, but then again you can’t spend 4 hours answering questions! I guess my only point is that the length of your videos doesn’t bother me. I really enjoy them!

As for future shows…. break them up into segments if you have to, but don’t put a time limit on your answers or you will not be able to be your spontaneous self! Being yourself is what we all want to see. Keep being your authentic self.
Some questions are best answered the old fashion way, and for those you can leave your reply The Frugal Crafter website…. 🙂

I do not mind the 45 min videos at all 🙂 Personally I do not mind the long videos but if you feel they are too long divide them up into smaller segments and in the description put whose questions you answered in that particular video. Hopefully that makes sense. Or another way is pick a certain amount of questions for the video and answer the others on your blog. That way no one is left out 🙂 Just don’t burn yourself out! I know that it can be done easily ( know from experience).

Let them go as long as they are. We can always watch them as long as we like and if not all the way, pick-up where we left out! Whatever is the easiest for you I guest would be best since you are the one doing all the work! Thank you for your videos whatever you decide!

I have never been bored and never fast forwarded on your videos. Tell your Hubby we girls are amazed they can watch hours of men running around chasing balls too but that’s the way it is, LOL I think it’s up to you Lindsay. Do what you want to do and refer to the old videos if people are asking the same questions if you want.

It is a funny thing b/c I usually don’t care for LONG videos except from you. I could seriously watch you all day long! I’ve told you before…If I lived in Maine…I would be your neighbor!
Do whatever you want to do. It is your channel and if you have 2.5 hours of questions…people obviously love watching you and trust what your opinion is and desire your knowledge. Please don’t let it become a burden or stressful thing for you.

your place looks neat compared to mine! I have about a 2″ space on my table to work in. I would say if they ar ellong, to split them into 2 parts so you can still answer the questions. I have a couple of other people that I follow that have 1 and 2 hour videos, that i stop and come back to later. Thanks for ll you do.

Oh thought I would share this…I had mentioned I got behind with all my trips to NY…well I have this kid that works for me..ok he’s not a kid but younger than my sons so he’s a kid! Anywhooo I had the one you were talking about chickens…he looked at me and said thought this was crafting??? another time you were talking about cooking and he said oh now we are listening to cooking shows??? roflmaooo now he just looks at me as the conversations changes!

For me – just could just do it till you’r done. I can watch it in increments if necessary. That is not a problem as I am retired. I don’t care if it takes 2 or 3 hours …. I enjoy every minute and learn so much each time when you are answering all the questions. Sometimes I watch part of it and then go back and finish watching the video later. But it is important that you do it in the time that is best for you. You are one busy gal and so I know you have other things to do. We definitely do not want you to get burned out with this. Hey I watch you all the time and when things get in the way I pause and come back time and time again, so it really doesn’t matter does it how long it is. As for what your desk looks like, welcome to the real work, don’t you love it. I hate seeing all those picture perfect desks all the time. Mine is like that ATM but no work has been done on it for awhile.

Let the camera roll! As long as you and Loraine are happy your subscribers can watch or not watch until the end with the click of a button. You and Loraine can split it into 2 or 3 segments to film it just as some of us will watch (or in some parts just listen depending on the content) it in segments as well. If you want to edit out anything, it could be the readers comments that don’t pertain to the question. I know when I ask a question, I might share a tidbit of something with you – feel like I know you well from watching so many of your videos and Ask a Crafters! Don’t want you and Loraine to get burnt out and dread long filming each week – want you to keep it fun for yourselves,too! Oh, and now your desk looks more like mine, thank goodness!

NO! Don’t cut the answers short! Give us the whole thing! I have so enjoyed every minute of all the AAC! I have learned so much! I appreciate your willingness to do them, the time and effort you put into them, and value your expertise and experience concerning all things crafty and artistic. If you do anything, offer abridged and unabridged versions (although I doubt many would watch the abridged version!).
So, don’t change anything!

Some suggestions: First, don’t limit your answers. No one wants a half-answered question. On the other hand, there may be questions that a particular viewer isn’t interested in. Perhaps they already know the answer or they don’t do that craft. (For me, it’s generally because I don’t do that craft, not that I already know the answer.) When there’s a question I’m not interested in, I fast forward through that answer. When your assistant looks at her paper, that generally means a new question is about to begin. What might be helpful is if you could group questions. Have all the knitting and crocheting questions together, watercolor questions together, etc. Maybe you could even hold up a sign letting us know what the category is. That would be helpful to viewers and wouldn’t take a huge investment of time on your part. Thanks for all your helpful tips!

After reading others comments I didnt think I needed to add mine, BUT, I am. Love all the information you share and if you only picked a few questions to answer I would wonder what I missed out on. I watch no matter how long but I also agree with others who said, break it up into
segments, this way we watch for that time element and watch the next segment when we have the time, but then, we dont miss anything, you can be long winded, which brings out a lot of extra information, and everyones question gets answered. Everybody is happy. Love this channel and you so much. You lady are invaluable.

I’d say do what is best for YOU. We out here are getting the benefit of your expertise for FREE and I was was taught that beggars can’t be choosers, i.e choosey. I prefer you keep doing this and if it gets too much for you, you won’t be able to…Killing the goose that lays the golden eggs is akin to shooting oneself in the foot, nay the heart.
My suggestion is to upload it in two or three segments/parts. That is the best of both worlds. Those who don’t have time to watch don’t have to..others who do will be able too.
And realize that those of us who have a craft addiction can’t get enough of your channel. So–MORE IS ALWAYS better!! There is no such thing as too long of a video for us. We pause the video or stop it and return to it as we can. That’s what the pause stop button is for…LOL.

One more thing (HA)–there are a ton of short videos on youtube that are so B-O-R-I-N-G..yes, they are perfect, and well edited and executed, but after awhile they all seem the same…nothing really new, nothing to inspire or give incentive. No real teaching happens. You are the breath of fresh air, so my vote is ‘do not change, PLEASE’.
As for husbands suggestion–mine would make the same one. Men have the easy answers–wanna bet they invented the Staples ‘easy button?’. I love my husband but I don’t always take his advice, because it is often geared to his benefit–i.e. not having a wife with a dilemma which makes life easier FOR HIM. HA! I’ve been married 46 years to the same man so I know whereof I speak.

The videos are so full of information, energy and enthusiasm but I agree totally with Connie Oswald Stofko. Sometimes I’m not interested in a segment. (I hadn’t figured out the assistant looking at her paper would be a cue for the next question). Grouping the questions/answers by category would be terrific and Connie’s sign idea would really help if I’m short of time but really want to hear your comments on a particular type of crafting. Maybe a list of the questions in their order in your printed intro would clue those of us with limited time to where we want to tune in. Wish I had the time to do all the crafts but the darn job gets in the way of my free time. Thanks for doing these videos. Sometimes I’ll just watch a couple minutes to rejuvenate myself hoping I’ll absorb some of your energy.

I would break it up by one hour segments, also I would group questions together by the subject. If two people have same or very similar questions answer them both at one time. Sometimes you will answer one question and come to the same type 8 questions later and have to repeat yourself. That would save time. Keep the banter, it’s part of the reason we all watch!!!

Hell to the no…..please don’t cut it short. Chop it into two segments if you like. In the end I will watch/listen to both. Even if I think I know the answer to a question, there is always something to learn from another person’s point of view. I grab my yarn and knitting needles and enjoy each Ask a Crafter episode from beginning to end.

You’re funny! Your desk doesn’t look trashed to me. It’s impossible to work and be sterile. Good ideas come from scraps too. Questions, questions, questions! My work space looks like that most of the time! I get it all cleaned up and everything in its place and the next think I know someone has made a huge mess again – and seeing as I’m the only crafter left in the house I can’t blame anyone else.
Personally, I love your videos as they are because they are informative and fun to watch. But that much filming must take it’s toll on you and your time. Perhaps if you have too many questions one week, you could film two segments? What ever works for you is fine and what keeps you going. We would hate for you to get tired of doing them.
Tell your hubby he is in the minority! Us crafters would watch way more than 45 minutes of your youtube posts.

Your videos are entertaining and informative; I love watching them. However, limiting the response time to a question or grouping the questions that concern related issues might take less of your time. That would give you more time to create. What ever you do, I and the rest of your fans will be watching, regardless of the length of the videos. I’ve been crafting for decades, but I have picked up new techniques and information about different materials from you. I had no idea what a gelato was until you did the comparison with gel sticks. Well really I thought it was an Italian ice cream!

Believe it or not …I read all the comments.. lol and it looks like no one wants anything cut out…I think everyone is so involved in the interaction the two of you are having that time goes by fast . The answers are detailed and you say”lets try it” on the spot so limiting your answers is “not a good thing”. Here’s a thought that might help you…many crafters watch Ustream which is 2-21/2 hours..so the length of time should not be a problem…

When I’m crafting and I run into a situation that has me stumped, I say, “hmm, “What would Lindsey do?” and I go search your blog or YouTube channel and 99% of the time I find an answer. I love Ask a Crafter – and the length of time is not a factor. Like someone else pointed out, it’s better than tv and I’m learning so much from you. I remember the episode where you talked about meeting up with one of your viewers and being a little concerned about the “stalker factor” – and I thought, how lucky that viewer was to actually get to spend some “real” time with you. Your videos are so fun and informative AND presented in such a friendly atmosphere – I feel like you are a friend – and I love spending time with you (no time limits, please!). You inspire us all.

i love the show, if its a question that I am not particularly interested in then I can fast forward, though 9 times out of 10 I just play your show all the way through on my net book whilst I am in the craft room.
As to your desk, its no worse than many of us!! 🙂

You are so delightful I’d hate to see any limits on whatever you want to talk about. I’d watch 2 hours (maybe in segments). Love, love, love your enthusiasm and willingness to let us in on all of your ideas, methods, and even a bit of your personal life. I feel as if we are friends. P.S. I think you should try publishing your book about crafting again. You are amazing and very popular.

Well, if you want to appear professional and gain more hits/viewers then do both – set a time limit AND only use 7-11 Q&A within that time limit ( say 20-30 minutes). Also edit, edit, edit – if you have the technical resources.

I love your videos whether they are answering any questions or not. You could answer a few questions a couple of times a week (maybe do shorter but more videos but record them all at once – Not sure how you work it) But I don’t want to see you get burnt out either. Do what you feel is necessary. Feel like you are my go to for crafting ???? and answers or how to videos.

I like the way it is. Answer them all, take all the time needed for precise answers, I learn so much from what others ask and your answers. Stuff I didn’t even think I needed to know. If people want they can fast forward to next question, or watch in increments as allowed by their schedules, I don’t mind sitting for hour or hour and half to watch you, but then again I am retired. But I do hit pause quite often to get up and do a chore here or a chore there so I am learning and cleaning at same time. Works for me.

How about this idea? You choose a time limit and you answer as many questions as that amount of time allows. Then you use any left over unanswered questions for the next video.
