WOYWW: Ask a Crafter 13!

Howdy folks! It is Wednesday and time for What’s on your Workdesk Wednesday! I wasn’t going to WOYWW this week but when I got back from walking the dog this morning I had 2 big boxes on my porch from Papermart! Also on my desk is an ATG gun and refills that my lovely YouTube friend Valerie sent me! Thank you so much Val, I hope I can figure out how to use it!

I am planning to go to town and get some Christmas shopping done today but first I had to unbox all of that crafty goodness, speaking of Christmas you should check Papermart’s prices, you will get WAY more bang for your buck for your crafting and wrapping!

It is figuratively a ton of wonderful goodies from Papermart and you will see this stuff in action in tutorials over the next 6 months. My first planned tutorial is a Thanksgiving centerpiece, be sure to keep an eye out for that!

OK, now down to business, it’s time for this weeks Ask a Crafter! I am so glad to have Lorraine as my co-host again this week, she is a riot! Let’s find out what my viewers and readers asked this week shall we? Oh, and if you have a question for next weeks episode you can leave it in the comments section.

BTW, I did make a lighthouse painting tutorial and I’ll post it on my blog this weekend or if the suspense is killing you it’s on my youtube channel. That’s all for today! Wish me luck Christmas shopping and til next time happy crafting!

  8. Love the video. You mentioned using shrink plastic to make some Dr Who themed pieces. Would you cover what works on it? I have colored with loads of inks in the past only to have it rub off.

I don’t have anyone to share/split with. As for your ATG…you’ll soon wonder how you ever got along without. What a lovely, generous gift. !

  12. Did I hear correctly that someone was looking for pink WC? Daniel Smith makes a beautiful pink water color called ‘Opera’ Dick Blick probably carries it.

  15. For someone who wants colors that look “wow” together I get an email every day from inspiration@design-seeds.com
It shows two photos & each photo has 6 colors that were in the photo. They have beautiful combinations. And, I also love your videos. You seem to really enjoy life.

  18. I have an Ask A Crafter question. I’m a supply hoarder, most specifically beads. I find myself holding back for that “perfect” project to use a supply in because I don’t want to “waste it,” but then I end up not making anything with it. I was wondering if you have the same difficulty at times? Do you have any suggestions on how to get over that and allow yourself to create with your supplies?

  19. I love the ATG because the tape lasts forever. That said, I was used to using smaller tape runners but was frustrated by how frequently I needed to refill or replace them. Since you are just getting used to runners, you won’t be as excited. Also, there is a bit of a learning curve to it (angle you hold it at and remembering to let off the trigger before lifting off the paper). However the ATG was originally designed for framers, so you will appreciate its grip if nothing else!

  20. Lindsay, don’t be too skeptical of the new Brother machine (aside from the sticker shock anyway). I am an ex-Cricut user that now owns a Silhouette Cameo. Silhouette produced a comprehensive machine and easy to use software that didn’t require a rocket surgeon (ha!) to figure out. Within the first couple weeks with the Silhouette I was importing digi stamps, clip art, and photos, then tracing the image and converting them to cut files. You make nodes sound more confusing that it needs to be, and I promise no cut regardless of its intricacy has taken more than a couple mins for the Cameo to cut. You mentioned the Imagine, which really was a disaster, and I just wanted to make sure you knew that other companies don’t rush to market with poorly designed products, and even the latest after-market software versions like MTC and SCAL have come a long way from their humble beginnings. OK, stepping down from my soapbox now! Didn’t think Ask a Crafter could get any better… until Lorraine came along πŸ™‚ Keep up the great work ladies!!!

  21. Hi!
Thank you so much for sharing all of your clever, thrifty and inspiring advice each week! I have 5 questions about alcohol and waterbased markers. Here we go!
#1. I’d love to own a bunch of Copics, but they’re so dang pricey so I only have a few. Are there any affordable alcohol markers and blender pens that work as well or close to Copics?
#2. Do you have a recipe to make blender pen solution and how to use it with a brush?
#3. Why is it best to store Copics flat as opposed to standing them in a container? Do water based markers need to be stored flat too?
#4. What is the best stamp ink to use with alcohol/water based markers.
#5. Any tips for using alcohol/water markers over laser printed vs ink jet printed images?
    BIG THANKS! πŸ™‚
    Tina

  22. I hope you love your ATG as much as I love mine. That is one tool, I don’t’ think I could live without. What did you put under your silpat mat? I ran the video back several times, but never caught what you were saying…old age, I guess. and just incase I don’t know what it is, where do you buy it?

Love Love LOVE your show, did I remember to tell you, that I LOVE YOUR SHOW!!!

  24. Thanks for your kind comments about Marco’s Paper (yes, we have the spritzers in stock!) — and also for enjoying our booth and giveaway at shows. I will admit to the Tim Holtz wisecrack — however, in making it I referred to a generic pile of manure and not necessarily one that I produced myself!

  25. Wow! That Virginia is such a generous viewer. You are going to LOVE your new ATG. Here’s a tip: to avoid creating a glob of tape when running a line of tape, make sure you consciously touch the gun to the paper BEFORE you pull the trigger. I find that if I literally say “touch, pull” each time, I get a perfect line of tape. Enjoy!

  29. Hi Lindsay, I had a question, maybe for the next “ask a crafter”, about the latest video you posted on youtube, the paper bead earrings. In it you show how to glaze paper beads with utee. I wondered if this also works on polymer clay beads. If not how would you glaze those? Love your video’s. Thank you already for your answer.
