Werewolves & Watercolor

Hello friends! I just got back from running with my neighbor again (my second run..er, jog with bits of walking here and there of the day might I add) and it is beautiful out with the full moon lighting the way. Well, it was good until I thought about werewolves and I couldn’t get to her house quick enough and right before I got there a deer jumped out into the road.  Luckily I realized it was a deer (and not some scary werewolf) or I would have dropped dead of a heart attack that had nothing to do with my fitness level.  So now I am having a cup of decaf tea (instead of wine-go health!) and finishing up some computer stuff. I have been doing a lot of watercolor painting this week and I finished up this painting yesterday. I have this project as a PDF tutorial in my shop with step by step photos and instructions in case anyone wanted a more complex project than what I have been doing in the free videos.

DCF 1.0

My tutorials for sale contain a PDF printable set of instructions (The beginner kits have lots of step by step photos) a printable pattern and a high-resolution picture of the finished painting (heck, you could print the painting on watercolor paper if you did not want to bother painting it LOL!) It only costs $3, what a deal!

[end shameless plug]

I had a few great questions in the comments after the last two free watercolor painting videos so I decided to answer them in a quick {ish} video tonight:

If you had a question that I did not think of just leave a comment and I will get back to you:) Well, that’s it for tonight, my runner’s high is wearing off…now I’m mostly hungry. Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

  1. Love your painting!
You mentioned that you should not use the water colour brushes for anything else. I have a ton of brushes that I’ve been using with acrylic paint for tole painting. If they are in good condition,(which they are) why don’t they work for water colour painting as well? Just curious. I don’t want to go buy new brushes if the ones I have work.

    1. Violet: I think you can use your acrylic brushes for water-coloring, but don’t use your water-coloring brushes for acrylic. Acrylic paint can get up in the ferrule and dry and ruin the watercolor brush, whereas water color doesn’t do that–it is water soluble and dissolves when placed in water. Should you get watercolor paint in your acrylic brush it will come right out when you get it wet.

      1. She is correct, you can use the acrylic brushes for watercolor:) If you invest in watercolor brushed keep them for watercolor tho:)

  2. Have no shame for plugging your wares–you share so much with us, it is a way for us to share w/ you if we purchase from you. Giving is a two way street.

Have you heard of Zombie runs? My daughter and sil are going to do one next Oct…they are training now…it sounds like a hoot–getting chased by zombies who try to steal one of the 3 flags you’ve been given with a goal to have at least one at the end of the run which entitles you to a free shirt that says you ran w/ the zombies and you get a pass to the party after…it is $75 which goes charity–for American Heart Assoc. During the run there are obstacles set up and if you cheat and try to go around you may end up on a 10K course unbeknownst to you. Wish I were younger and in better shape…sounds like a blast. And it starts at dusk—scary.

Are you sure that was a deer? Might have been a zombie.

  3. Hey Lindsay! You make watercolors look so easy & they are stunning btw! Quick question – do you have any quick holiday craft/gift ideas? I’m a kindergarten teacher & our whole school does a 2 day craft marathon so kids can make & give a handmade gift to their parents. We are running out of cool ideas. We did duct tape wallets, decorated post-it holders, fimo cover pens, soup in a jar, etc. I don’t want to see another dang flower topped pen or ill barf! Thanks!

    1. Kindergardners will love making paper beads and paper bead necklaces, bracelets and key chains. Plus it develops fine motor skills! Another craft is to buy a box of inexpensive white tiles from the home center (or restore) and folk art enamels and let the kids paint pictures on them and make coasters. You will want to glue felt feet on the bottom so they do not scratch a table but it is a really easy craft and lots of WOW! Hope it helps!

  4. You’ve talked about what specific watercolor paper you like to use but would you please go into a bit more detail about the different papers there are and what works best for what. For example, what exactly does “cold press” mean? I wanted to buy a starter tablet of watercolor paper to use with my stamps but there were so many different types and finishes that I didn’t know where to start. I love all your videos and appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge and experience with us. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

  5. Hi Lindsay, I love your videos. Look forward to them every day. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. My question is about brushes. I’ve accumulated many over the years and they’ve gotten mixed up. Is there any way to tell if a brush is an oil one, or an acrylic, or a watercolor? I have learned so much from you. You’re a blessing.

  6. Also, I hate being out alone at night, so good for you doing that. I would have dropped dead at the deer jumping out at me, forget about werewolves!

  8. Hi Lindsay
You’re a great teacher and I love your videos. Sometimes, when I don’t feel well, all I need to do is watching one of your videos and mostly, at least have a smile in my face, or even are laughing with you. 🙂
I especially like the way you’re “relatively” clear talking (at least when you’re not rumbling 🙂 *lol*), because English is not my native language. 🙂
Well, I have one question. I do have watercolor cakes (Cottman), but they are loose and don’t stick in the pans anymore. Any idea about how to “glue” them, so they will stay put in their pans?
    Thanks – Claudia

    1. If you use them getting the paint moist with a wet brush will do the trick. Colors I do not use often will go loose on me too:)

      1. I’ve tried that too, but they get loose again and again. I thought that maybe gum Arabic or whatever kind of medium would make them stick more permanently.
Thanks a lot Lindsay and please keep on making videos. I do learn so much from you. 🙂 (Btw, I recently talked with Linda about you and she’s very happy to have you 🙂 🙂 🙂 ) – Claudia

      2. Aww, Linda is a sweetie! So are you! Good luck with the pans, gum Arabic will work but I think it is a sign you need to use them more and keep them moist and sticky!

  9. Thanks Lindsay, this might be the key. I’ll try to just spritz them more often, even though I’m not painting with them. 🙂 You are also a treasure, I very often come back to a tutorial from you, when I need help. 🙂 🙂 🙂 – Claudia
