WOYWW: The Birthday Edition

Howdy folks! Lindsay here with a late WOYWW post…well, it is still Wednesday so I guess it isn’t late at all. Today is my birthday and look what my hubby surprised me with:

DCF 1.0

A leather apron and cool welding goggles to keep me safe at the torch! I love making glass beads with the the kit he gave me for Christmas but after someone told me that they burned themselves when a piece of glass broke off and landed on their shirt I wanted a leather apron. I didn’t mention this to my husband until Monday (2 days before my birthday) but he still manged to find one and the goggles that should help me see the bead better when I am making them by cancelling out the orange of the flame. I can’t wait to try it! Want to see more crafty desks? Head over the Julia’s blog The Stamping Ground for the full list of WOYWWers! Til next time happy crafting!

    1. I used the kind that came with my Fuseworks kit, it is by diamond tech, I think the kinds Devardi sells is good too and I will try it when I run out. I have to add water to mine sometimes because it dries out and gets thick. You can give it two coats if you need too. I still think sometime you need to work at getting the beads off. I always soak mine for an hour before removing them;)

      1. Thanks so much. Maybe I need to add some water. It’s started popping off when I heat it up. Frustrating. I havethesame kit and love making bead also.
By the way, Happy Birthday. Love your blog.

      2. When you add water to your bead release, make sure to use distilled water (or bottled water, in a pinch). Tap water has chlorine and assorted minerals and stuff in it that will build up in your bead release and make it more prone to cracking while you’re trying to make your bead. Per Linda’s comment about her bead release popping, that can be caused by the water you use, and also, if your bead release is not completely dry on the mandrel when you go to use it, the moisture in the release will expand as steam, and cause bits of release to pop off. To help with this, warm your mandrel very gently out at the end of the flame, to let the moisture cook off more gently, then bring it in closer to use.

      3. Also make sure the glass is hot and melty enough because if the glass is too stiff it can pull the bead release off, that happened to my first batch of beads, I had to smash them off the mandrels LOL!

  14. Well HAPPY belated BIRTHDAY!!!! I have always wanted to learn how to make glass beads. I watched a few tutorials on youtube, it looks hard, and a bit expensive. But they really are beautiful and unique. Which are 2 of my favorite things. I’ve enjoyed my visit. Have a great weekend. (((HUGS)))
