Sew a 10 minute Skirt {and accessories!) Crafty Video!

Howdy folks! I was going to wait until tomorrow to post this but I thought you just might feel the need to sew after watching me make a skirt in 10 minutes, actually it takes less time if you get right to it! You need 1 yard of fabric for this project. I got the idea from the Grosgrain Fabulous blog, and it is, well, fabulous! I was so excited that I wore my new skirt to a baseball game Thursday night (and practically  froze my behiney off!) but darn it I looked cute! I’m going to pick up a couple more yards of fabric and elastic when I am in town today because I see many more 10 minutes skirts in my future!

The important thing to remember when you buy your material is to make sure the salvage (finished) edges look good and the pattern extended all the way to the edge, that way you won’t have to hem this puppy! Here is the video to show you how to make this easy and I daresay cute skirt!

And because I know you want to be extra fabulous here is how to make some cool hair goodies:

Fun huh? So now you see why I didn’t make you wait, you will want to sew something new to wear today right? Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

  1. That skirt is too adorable. You are very cute and funny too! I am a beginner sewer and I’m lazy too. Don’t you just love lazy people? We are the best. Where would the world be without us? Probably further along but that’s ok! ha ha.

I have two questions for you. I feel a bit uncomfortable with the sizing on the fabric and the elastic. I am a size 16/18. Any idea what ballpark about of fabric i need and how long elastic should be?

loved you video. please make more. i learned a lot especially about going forward and backwards at beginning and end. my stitches are always coming loose ad that’s why! thanks!

    1. Hi Karyl! I wear a size 8/10 and 3/4 a yard was perfect, not too bulky. If you use too much fabric and the skirt it too full it will add unflattering pounds. Since you are cutting the fabric lengthwise whatever width of yardage you buy is doubled, so a yard turns into 72″ of fabric. I think for a 16/18 1 1/8 (one and one eighth) yard would be sufficient but if you want to make the hair stuff too or a matching bag you might want to buy 1 1/2 so you have extra materiel. I will tell you how I determined to use 3/4 yard, I wrapped the uncut material around my lower torso and made sure it stretched from one hip all the way around to my butt leaving a gap the width of my leg. So after I cut the fabric in half and sewed it it was 2x as long and that was the perfect amount of room without being too bulky. I am on the short side (and short waisted) so I have to be careful not to add too much bulk. Surprisingly the seersucker fabric was not bulky and it does not wrinkly (I took the blog photo after I had worn it all day!) so I can recommend that too! If you have any more questions just give a holler;)

  2. Just made a skirt to wear to an art festival today! Thank you for your video. I’d never thought of using the finished edge instead if hemming. SO much easier! My three year old just asked me to make her one, too. 🙂

  3. Is there anything you can’t do, Lindsay? Lol!! Thanks for your lovely comment on my blog, and for your good wishes for our house move. I’ll be posting lots after we complete – all the building works etc. The kitchen is going to be awesome, and I’m even more excited about my new ARTHaven! Glad you like my Zentangle takeaway box – I emailed the company this evening with pics of what I’d done with their packaging – I wonder what they will think!
