WOYWW: A Writing Desk Re-Do

Howdy crafters! It’s Wednesday and time for What’s on your workdesk Wednesday! Truth be told I don’t have much to share with you on my desk this week because yesterday I spent the day shopping, visiting, lunching and having a whole lot of birthday fun and Monday I spent about 8 hours in my twin daughters bedroom trying to get it cleaned and organized. The girls were troopers and by the end of the day the walls had been washed, clothes sorted, nooks and crannies cleaned out and toy boxes de-junked so as a reward I decided to spruce up their shabby (and not in a chic way) writing desk. Best of all it took 15 minutes!

Here is how I did it. I grabbed several sheets of pretty pink and green patterned papers and cut them in to quarters (6″x6″). Then I arranged them in a grid on the desktop and used bits of double stick tape in the corners of each piece of paper to adhere it. Then I simply covered it with clear Contact paper. Easy Peasy and it sure looks better than it did…I should have taken a before picture. This was my childhood desk and I am glad that it is still useful for my girls:)

Oh, by the way I painted the chair years ago, I just used masking tape yo make the gingham grid on the seat and hand painted some primitive roses on the back, decoupaged on some dragonflies and sealed it with clear acrylic varnish. Not bad for a yard sale find!

Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

  1. Nicely done, both desk AND chair. How durable is the contact paper? I suspect MY DD would ruin it in a week ๐Ÿ™‚ I’d be tempted to go for Mod Podge for her LOL!

    1. it is quite durable, just leave 1/4″ around the edges for it to stick to. I did this to my son’s dresser 2 years ago and it has just started to lift in a corner but it is easy to do again, it only took 15 minutes and a few sheets of paper:)

  2. What a great idea, it looks so fresh and clean so all your effort was worthwhile. Love the chair too. Are you available for hire by any chance? LOL. Happy WOYWW, Anne x #54

  3. Wow! What a great way to spruce up an old desk top. Plus when the colors get tiresome or moods change, you can easily switch it out. How fun! And some of the best finds come from yard sales! Judy #130

  5. What a fantastic make-over Lindsey, the desk looks so pretty as does the chair. I hadnโ€™t realised that the Gingham pattern was painted on, I thought it was a little cushion on there.

  6. The desk and chair look fantastic. I just came across your blog–it’s so great! Thanks for all the ideas you share. I’m a big crafter as well. I love the process of creation ๐Ÿ™‚ I usually shop yard sales to find inexpensive items to upcycle or repurpose. Do you do a lot of yard sale shopping or just find your materials other places? I just started using a cool site (http://www.yardsalesearch.com) to find and map out local yard sales. Just wanted to pass that along ๐Ÿ™‚

  7. Oh I’m sure your girls will love their new desk! It’s so pretty! Now you made me miss my childhood desk! I had to give it away when we moved. It was really ratty but now that I’ve seen what you did, I regret not fixing it up! Patsy from HeARTworks
