Let’s Make a Ribbon Shelf!

It’s easy and inexpensive too! I made this shelf {and the video} yesterday and it only took about 20 minutes and two of my favorite craft materials: Foamboard and hot glue:

You will need 3 dowels 3/8″x48″, a 40″x32″ sheet of foamcore {foamboard}, a hot glue gun and glue sticks, a saw for cutting the dowels, a yardstick, x-acto knife and pencil and white acrylic paint.

Watch the video to see how it’s done:

I kept the dowels a bit longer than my box because I wanted to hang my ribbon scraps from them. I wind up short lengths of ribbon on little paper bobbins and put them on a large binder ring sorted by color. I can hang the rings off the end of the dowels for more storage! You can download a bobbin template (printable & SVG) for free here.

Now my ribbon will stay organized and dust free and I have some room to grow my stash if I wish (or I can just make another ribbon holder!)  Here is the cutting diagram from the video if you want to print it out:

This project qualifies for the following challenges: DDH Challenges, Happileigh Scrappin, Make it Monday, Woodware USA, Cheerful Stamp Pad , Emerald Faeries, I Did It Creations, Crafty Catz, Inspire Me Fridays, Peachy Keen Stamps Let’s Face it Fridays, Tellen’s Place, Paper Romance, Shelly’s Images, Crafting for all Seasons, Creative Belli, Penny’s Paper-Crafty, Truly Scrumptious and http://toptiptuesday.blogspot.com/

  5. What a great idea Lindsay. I love the lateral thinking of putting the spools of ribbon behind the rods. I have mind on rods and find it very frustrating when I need to take one off the rod as I have to take all the spools off. I am going to make one of these for myself. I love it, thanks for sharing such a good idea.

  6. Lindsay, you are one amazing person. I love your ribbon shelf. The ones I have seen have the dowels running through the spools which to me made it awkward to use the ribbon. Your idea is fantastic. You can merely take down the spool individually.

    LOVE IT!

  8. Oh my goodness Lindsay! I was just looking the other day for something I could make with my foamcore board to organize things in my craft house. This is perfect and I really appreciate you sharing it with us.
I can’t wait to make mine.

    Thanks again,

  9. This is great. I don’t have the room for one that large but I think I will try making a much smaller one or different shape, maybe longer and shorter might fit. Thanks so much.

  11. This is awesome!!! Thank you SO much!!! I have lots of spooled ribbon but am too cheap to buy the store-bought one like this and I can adjust the height of the dowels to suit the different spools I always have!! Thanks so much!!!

  12. Wow, this is really cool! I have been looking for something like this to buy that was reasonable, but haven’t found anything that wasn’t pretty expensive. I have thought about making some cubbies out of foam board, and even bought some to have on hand for when I have time, but I never thought to make something like this out of it. Now that I’ve seen your post I know what one of the projects for my summer vacation will be. Thank you so much for this wonderful idea.

  14. Thanx so much! For the past 6 months I have been trying to come up with a way to organize my ribbons so that they are arranged by colour without having to remove many spools from a dowel so that I could add newly purchased ribbon. Your idea is so simple and inexpensive. I can’t wait to create it!

  15. I think the ribbon holder is inspiring and I appreciate that you put a picture of it flat….The drawing. As for the shelving unit—-I will be making one myself as close to yours as possible. I have to say though, you aren’t giving yourself anywhere near enough credit. First off, I don’t have a single Copic marker and don’t care. I use what I have and do a great job. Almost everything you showed you criticized yourself for your skill level, amount of markers, how much or I should say, how little you have, that you haven’t labeled everything and so on. You look to have a great base of everything. Give yourself some credit. I’m scared to make these shelves because it seems overwhelming but that is not going to stop me. Your creation is by far the cheapest and best for organizing for a crafter. The only thing I might change for myself is to slightly tilt my marker, coloring pencils etc, maybe 1cm towards the back so I’m sure they don’t fall out. I’m not sure if my desk is level so better safe than sorry. But your idea is going to take me a long way. I will now go back and watch the card part of then video. I was just getting so upset for your lack of confidence and product quantities that I couldn’t watch more till I got this off my chest. Please pick your chin up. I hope my units turn out as nice and organized as yours did. Wish me luck!
