Chalkboard Vinyl Decals-make your own!

Howdy! My poor hubby didn’t get a proper dinner last night because I opened up a roll of chalkboard vinyl and started making decals for my kids’ rooms, it was so fun dinner time came and went and I was still playing with these fun decals! It was so fun and easy to work with. Here are the results. I used my Cricut and Sure Cuts a Lot (SCAL)software to cut the shapes. I used a depth of 3 and pressure low (or #2) to cut through the vinyl but not the backing.

I used the weather shapes right in the scal library to cut the clouds and raindrops, I first positioned the clouds and filled the rest of the space with the raindrops so I didn't wast a bit of precious vinyl! The birds were cut with the font LadyBird from Lettering Delights.

I used these fun fonts from Lettering Delights to cut my Vinyl:

DB Robots *on sale for $1 til Thursday! Use blackout mode in SCAL. This is a great font for digital stamping too!

DB Ladybird (no longer available)

DB Foliage

DB Pretty Petals (no longer available) try DB Florography or DB Floral Infusion instead.

DB Sweet Spring (no longer available)

I used DB foliage, DB Pretty Petals Solid, DB Sweet Spring and DB Ladybird to cut these shapes all from Lettering delights

I really like the quality of the Lettering Delights fonts (many of which get made into Cricut cartridges) and I would rather pat $3 for a font of graphics and use SCAL software than to pay $30-$70 for a bulky cartridge!

The chalkboard vinyl is thicker than the colored vinyl I get art the local sign and banner shop so with the exception of the robots on my son’s walls I could peel and stick without transfer tape. I bought the chalkboard vinyl at ohmycrafts.com it was on sale $5 for 2 12″x24″ sheets. Later I saw that you can buy a 6′ long by 18″ wide roll of chalkboard contact paper, I bet that would work well and it is a better deal. If anyone has used it please let me know how you like it!

When cutting a detailed font like DB robots be sure to select "blackout" mode, that will give you a nice crisp silhouette.

And now for another bit of fun. My Girls bed room used to be my art-room and the floor was a mess of paint drips and overspray and it was not artistic in the least so I dug out a bunch of acrylic paint and let the kids go wild:

I wish I remembered to pull off the masking tape from the bottom of the beds and baseboard πŸ™‚

After the paint dried I gave the floor two light coats of clear spray paint. Two months later the paint is still on there good!

Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

  1. Great floor! It looks like you have a couple of budding artists on your hands! πŸ™‚ I just bought SCAL at CHA Summer 2010–haven’t loaded it yet, but I’m hoping to get to it tonight. Your images look really crisp. Thanks for posting the depth and pressure settings you used.

    1. Carmen, the blackout mode is under the apperence box on the right hand side of the screen. Your shape needs to be selected for the box to show up.

  3. Just a quick question. Where did you get the chalkboard vinyl? The only chalkboard material we have where I live is of fabric. It has to be conditioned first.
