How to convert clip art to a cutting file for Cricut!

There are so many cute clip art designs out there. Wouldn’t you like to cut some of them with your Cricut? Well if you have Sure cuts a Lot (SCAL) software and some image editing software you can in about a minute. Here is a card with a die cut I cut with my Cricut and SCAL and the cute Heartland USA clip art set from Lettering delights, BTW you can save 60% off your entire order at Lettering Delights with the coupon code firecracker.

Here I used clip art from the Heartland USA set to die cut the large coffeepot and a coordinating tag (printed) as an embellishment.

The sentiment is from the Coffee Talk digital stamp set from Lindsay’s Stamp Stuff. This card qualifies for the challenge at Annabelle Stamps and Creative Card Crew!

The first thing to do is to choose some clip art, I am using the coffee pot from Heartland USA, by the way these are the images used in the Just because Cards Cricut cart! Clean images with bold colors work best.

Now load you paper into your cricut and cut! Once you get the hang of it you will be converting designs in no time!

Tips for success:

Start with good quality clip art (buy a nice set with clean designs.)

When you use the magic wand tool you may have to adjust the tolerance so you can select just the color you want, play with it a bit until you have it right.

Last but not least, do not share the files you convert, this is not creating a design, you are CONVERTING it, it is not your designs so don’t share them without permission but do buy lovely clip art sets and convert them for your personal cutting, it’s fun!

Thanks for stopping by and til next time happy crafting!

  1. Thank you so much.
I have SCAL and have been learning so much on how to use it. It is a most amazing program. I would tell everyone to get it.
Just love what you can do with it. Was so happy to see your project.

  4. Thanks so much for posting these directions. I just got started with Lettering Delights after seeing all of the great things that you have done with their stuff. I am having trouble getting usable graphics into SCAL. For example, when I tried to work with a watermelon slice graphic, it converted to just a regular, boring triangle. Do you have any experience doing it with Inkscape? Or do you know of another free program that is easy to use for converting the images?

    1. Hi Rebecca,
Try Gimp I think it can be downloaded at gimp.org, it is free. You need software with a “magic wand” selection took so you can select and seperate all of the parts, then fill them in with the “paint bucket” with black and then trace it in SCAL2 or inkscape. I think I know what slice you are talking about, one of the new summer sets? You can send me a link to the product and I’ll convert it and tell you how if you still have trouble. It is like anything, you won’t really get it until you play with the software and files yourself;)
